Aw, you guys are killin' me.

Too funny.

I suppose the box Jean got was of the same type that has all the "tapes" from the future. (That was the coolest concept I had heard as a 17 year old kid in 1984 when I picked up my first SFB game.)

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 07:01 am: Edit

Randy, you're on the money there about the box. The tapes (an archival storage device which is densely packed with data) take up a huge amount of space. I would not be surprised to find out that Olivette was nearly as prolific as Isaac Asimov.

Not all of it is going to be of interest to ADB's customers. The story of the star-crossed young lovers (the Kzinti Cat Who Is Idealistic and the the Lyran P'ureseck'see) isn't really one of battle and I don't think PD players would want to play characters who end up ... well, dead. That particular trivideo had the distinction of being banned in both the Kzinti Hegemony and the Lyran Star Empire, although it was a huge hit in the WYN Cluster.

One WYN reviewer wrote, "The love scenes between the two young beings are some of the most erotically tinged scenes I have ever watched. You can feel the passion, the love, the romance that crossed the barriers of speciesism that still inflame our foolish brethren outside the Cluster. Only such a clever, inventive, and daring writer as Olivette Roche would have dared to record a work destined to become this masterpiece. Brava, Ms. Roche!"

The trivideo did win awards from most of the groups promoting anti-speciesism including Furry Love, KAVE (Klingon and Vulcan Eroticism), WHICK-L (What Happens If Cygnans and Klingons Love?), and the little known group "Tholians Ignite Hydran Love". (I did research the last group; the founder and sole member of the group pointed out that love could be platonic; as long as one of the lovers remained in an environmental suit, all would be well. Her ideas continued, "Love, True Love, can overcome anything. When the Brave Lovers are ready, they will shed their suits in an environment that is a compromise between them and then their expanded and enlightened consciousnesses will move to a plane that we cannot yet comprehend.")

Absolutely fascinating social history, but alas, probably boring for our games.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 07:44 am: Edit

Silly me, I forgot to mention the title of the trivideo. It was called "The Tale of Two Tabbies". Some fans call it "Cat and P'ur" or "C&P".

By Terry "Full Stop" O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 09:40 am: Edit

Some academics allege that Olivette Roche stole the basic plot from the ancient legend of Furpheus and Fuzzydice, which is common to the Kzintis and Lyrans and supposedly dates to the Leopard Kings period.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 10:06 am: Edit

Mr. O'Carroll, how long have you been a supporter of the jack-booted thugs of Star Fleet?

Did you volunteer to be one of their minions or did they recruit you?

Is "Full Stop" a moniker designed to praise you for work slowdowns in the wasteful and bloated production of Star Fleet as it adds the "Crawford Box" to each schematic or does it have some more lethal meaning, such as assassination?

Mr. O'Carroll! Come back! I have more questions!

By ROBERT l cALLAWAY (Callaway) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 10:08 am: Edit

The wyn reviewer did made several mistakes on the movie.
1. Both Kzint and Lyran are the same species
the biologist at both universities and at the KLINGON, HYDRAN, and FEDERATION XO BIOLOGY centers of higher learning have confirmed DNA matches that show common ancestoies as late as 10,000 standard years.

2. While the reviwer claim both lover died it was never proven both family groups claimed that thier yacht was destried while fleeing hostile space rumor abounded however that a ship was recovered by the WYN zone patrol with a lyran family of 6 a male, felmale and 4 new born cubs
the male was noted to speak with an acent.

3. While the military pros proclaim that their is nothing to learn from this tale consider the tale.
The FT yacht LIT, BIT, KITTY desperate run for the border chased by lyran POL ship DUKES JUSTICE and the KZINTI POL ship at the end of a long patrol short on drones encounters and engages both the LYRAN POL ship and the star crossed lovers a three way malstrom as the lovers seek to evade the long hand of the law and the law seeks the bounty on both the lovers and the enemies ship. the lovers barely ahead the Wyn border in reach will they make it or die within slight of freedom to love as they will.
truely a test of ship handling.

Guys, sorry! I step away from my computer for a moment to find out that Olivette has sneaked on again. I'll try to keep her from posting.

Olivette did respond to those allegations and pointed out it wasn't stealing as the legends were public domain and that she enhanced and embellished it as part of an age-old tradition among story tellers.

The whole sequence about Cat and P'ur meeting is new. It takes place at the Federation Embassy and has Cat crashing the party. He and his friends distract the two handsome, well-muscled (but none-too-bright) Marine guards at the entrance of the Embassy by introducing them to two lovely Orion "slave girls". The dance sequence is totally amazing and quite probably a large part of the "R" rating.

The deluxe edition of the trivideo includes a cut scene of the two Marines peeling potatoes. They break out in song:
Brush off your re-egs,
Start quoting them now!
Brush off your re-egs,
And off'cers you will wow.

That might be one best left on the computer...

Honestly, while ridiculous ( ), the 'Olivette Roche' kind of thing COULD work in a PD supplement (although in the light-hearted fashion it is, now - no need to offend fans of her 20th century doppelgänger, as his fans outnumber current SFU fans by something like a million to one ).

With the idea of running longer fiction pieces/stories with sidebars describing what is happening in game - or breakout boxes - or whatever is needed to make sure every page is clearly "this is game material" stuff...flavor text is still needed. A single-page review of the latest Olivette Roche trivideo, or critical evaluation of one, etc. A few pages like that, here and there in such a journal, would work great to add 'flavor text' to the universe. Something GMs could describe as playing in the background of some office where the player characters are waiting for a meeting with an alien representative - perhaps allowing the GM to clue them into a biased perspective the alien will have about the Federation, etc.

The more 'flavor text' the better! (IMHO, one of my favorite sets of such 'flavor text' were the full-color Galactic Empire recruitment posters in the Star Wars RPG Sourcebooks, or the Sienar Fleet Systems manufacturer ad in the 'Imperial Sourcebook' - "GAT: We're Ready for the Toughest Competition"...LOL!)

And, FWIW, something I'd come to be used to from the Star Wars Sourcebooks - the 'Death Star Technical Companion' being perhaps the best example for being so SMALL, yet so CHOCK FULL of great RPG material, that would also be great to see a LOT MORE OF in SFU RPG products is...maps! The deck plans on their own are fantastic, of course - beautifully done, and I love each CL or product that comes with one - but that's only a start.

RPGs take place on more than just starships, so we really need to see maps of more than just starships. What do the grounds of a typical planetary starbase look like? There are tons of 'ground bases' in SFB - agro stations, communications stations, power stations, etc. These are fairly small SSDs (smaller than frigate size, usually, and we have several frigate-scale deck plans)...why do we not have maps for all of these bases?

Adding maps of the areas covered in the stories might also be a good way to tie these into "obvious game material".

"Ridiculous?"

Mr. Fulton, I noticed that you have created sexy new art for the Romulan Star Empire. How long have you been working for them and what do you report to them?

One notices that you seem to have aliases (Xander, Alex, Alexander). Do you find that it helps or hinders you to have three distinct, yet related, names in your work as a Romulan agent?

How long did it take you to become fluent in Romulan?

Mr. Fulton! Come back! I have more questions!

To my loyal and loving fans, please stay tuned for one of our future hard-hitting documentaries: "Alexander Fulton, Romulan Spy or Unwitting Dupe" soon to be broadcast throughout the Federation.

Once Jean retires, or rather, moves to Amarillo to take up her true calling, I hope we could see Prime Directive material for small craft (and maybe small ground bases). PD: Klingons already has deck plans for a Commercial Platform IIRC, and sample characters. A GM could easily change the details and transplant that particular ComPlat to wherever he wanted it to be.

Jean, you left the door to the wormhole open again?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Saturday, March 27, 2010 - 03:44 pm: Edit

I heard Olivette had slipped through and was staying in the Tampa area. Something about an intelligent military guy and a red Mustang...

Looks like it's time to move again.

That weirdo crazy lady has found me again.

Maybe I can go hide out in Afghanistan. Took almost 18 months to lose her when I went to Iraq last time.

Petrick, if you please, it is time to move The Mirror of Erised the monolith again.

Remember, you must keep it some place safe, some place secret...

There went all hope of me ever finishing PD Feds. My brain is full of this song.

Well, except I did get sent in the Notable planets and the Notable non-Fed worlds.

All is not lost.

Jean:

Okay, you made me move it out of Haiti. Then you did not like Peru. And you would not let me leave it in the Philippines. Are you going to make me move it again? The locals on this planet seem to be getting a little upset. Frankly, I think I should just drop it where that incessant droning sound is coming from . . . it makes a good targeting beacon . . .

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 - 11:23 pm: Edit

Petrick, remember there were odd reactions in the space-time continuum the last time when we got it near there. I think we need to avoid that area for the time being.

Have you thought about North Korea?
