If I fixed it, I didn't know I was fixing it and it didn't show fixed when I did it! The mysteries of computers continue to amaze!

More fickle than a roomful of Klingons at a Shakespeare reading contest...

We're still working on getting completely organized on our end, but here are thoughts for today.

On Rangers and Battle Groups and Con Support

Jean Sexton writes:

One of the reasons I moved to Amarillo was so that I could take several projects away from "Steve Cole time" and add them to "Jean time." Steve has long known that he needs to spend more of his time designing games and running the company. Marketing our products got a lick and a promise of more attention later. That promise is coming due.

One of the best ways to find new opponents is to run demonstrations and teach people how much fun the games are. We've had the Ranger demonstration teams for a very long time, but there was no organization. My previous job was all about organizing information so that it can be retrieved and used. I'm trying to bring that organization to the Rangers.

Do you want to be a Ranger? Contact me and let me know that you want to join the Rangers. You'll be a Ranger Recruit until you hold your first demo. Then you earn your Ranger pin on your plaque on the Wall of Honor.

Another way that you can find new opponents is to run a battle group. This is a group of people who meet and play SFU games. We're working now to set up a page to publicize these. You can promote the game days you have, and cons that you attended as a group, and and demos you sponsor. Rangers that belong to a battle group will also be featured on that page. Active members can have their individual battle group insignia added to their plaque on the Wall of Honor.

What else do active battle groups get besides fame? The glory of being able to get special playtest materials. As long as they report on it (and do a reasonable job of it), then they will get more materials to playtest. Contact me with information on your battle groups.

We've always supported cons, even if our SFU games are not played there. What is going to be different is that if we support a con near a Ranger or battle group, we'll try to contact Rangers to let them know about the con and we'll do the same for battle groups. We want to get our name and our games out there to the world. And we want to help you find more folks to play with.

Ideas? Feel free to contact me. I'm always willing to listen.

Simone has been working on our pages for the Rangers. We still want to work on the Ranger Resources section to break it down by game system, but thought that the new pages needed to get up quickly.

What do you think of them?

Do we get real gold on the star of our badges?

Jean, sent a report of my demo yesterday to your email...with pictures!

Amazing miracle: One of the guys who showed up was someone that was on Starlist that I could not track down for the life of me. YAY!!

Got the reports, but cannot record them until I am on the work computer. :)

Jean, I have set up to do bi-weekly games of Federation Commander at Comics Plus in Macon, GA starting Sunday 27 Apr. Game time will be 12 noon. I did a demo there last November. You should have a record of it. I have done two follow up visits and have generated enough interest to start a regular game!

I have a few questions. I was wanting to run Prime Directive at a convention that is coming up in late June.. The Ranger form only shows PD20M, are we allowed to run GURPS: PD, PD1, and any of the other variants.?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 - 12:33 am: Edit

GURPS PD for sure. I'll check with Simone to get it added.

Rangers, if you have a demo scheduled, please let me know so it can go in Hailing Frequencies.

I have an SFB/FC event scheduled for King Con 2014 8-9 Nov at Museum of Aviation Robins AFB GA. I have submitted the event through the Rangers page.

Well poopy!
Nobody showed up for my Ranger SFM demo.
:(

It may be my fault since I scheduled it during the Johnny Appleseed festival here in Fort Wayne.

So, I'm playing the LS19 scenario.
(Can't post pics here so I'll do it on FB instead.

We are working on a facebook page for Rangers only to allow them to discuss ways to boost participation in their local venues... or even to build a local group.

If you are a Star Fleet Ranger, and are on Facebook...

Send me a message and we'll get you added to the group.
Or go to the group here and request to be added:

Ran a demo of Battle Force recently in North Carolina.
2 guys named Bill had never seen or heard of it, ran a couple learn and practice games. They seemed
to enjoy, altho one complained it was frustrating to have good ships and 'the wrong weapon cards' in his hand.
Reminded him of the discard option, and noted any game with cards and dice will have some random factors which may not go one's way.
All in all, i think fun was had, will see if they want a sequel.

Well folks, as Jean announced in CL54, I have been appointed to take over the day-to-day of running the SFU Ranger demo team. I come with a bit of experience both teaching various types of games as well having been in quite a few demo teams (and ran/helped run a few). I will admit I am most familiar with GURPS Prime Directive but early on played ACTASF and spent Gencon 2012 demoing it in the Mongoose Publishing booth.

We have big changes coming to the program. A new handbook, suggestions for demoing our games, and vastly improved rewards. All I can safely say about the (already approved) rewards is they will include *ALL* physical products and PDFs – but nothing on shapeways.com.
For communications we will be collecting everyone’s email, and have already set up a hidden section on the forums just for the Ranger program. Since not everyone uses FB or the ADB BBS our official comms will be the BBS and the FB group will be our more public social space (no one required to join FB or the ranger group there).

Now, I need a little help from all of you. We don’t have complete contact info for everyone meaning at least a valid email. So, I am asking each of you to email me at the address below with the following:
- Name
- Email (preferably the one used on DTRPG/Wargame Vault)
- Forum Handle
- BBS Handle

Once I have the info, I will add you to the ranger group on the forum which will let you access our area there.

I look forward to working with all of you to spread the gospel of the Star Fleet Universe!

Al Beddow
Deputy Commandant for Ranger Operations
