The first season had a lot more sophmoric humor than the second two.
It went from more comedy to more drama as it matured.

What Ryan says is true. The funny part for me personally was my GF was more into the clever humor and combats of Season 1 and is less into the drama of season 2. LOL She was like when are they going to fight the Krill again??

I seem to recall tht there was network pressure in the beginning to make the Orville "family guy: in Space." How much that impacted the early episodes is unknown.

Like all "Trek", season one was shaky. But by season three, it has really hit its stride. I enjoyed the last season immensely.

Yes, some serial some episodic.
