I loved that episode but I always thought it was incredibly presumptuous and weird that Sisko, who is essentially a Starfleet military governor/mid-level administrator, sits down one day and decides he is going to play stellar politics and why the Romulans treated him seriously. Don't they have ambassadors and heads of state to deal with this kind of stuff?
By Nick Blank (Nickgb) on Friday, April 26, 2019 - 02:59 pm: Edit |
Well, the whole thing was a bit back-door. The Romulans arrived and departed DS9 cloaked, so if nothing came of it they could claim in never happened. I assume the Starfleet diplomatic corp was never in on any of it, and the Romulans took Sisko seriously enough to meet with him since they had already trusted him enough with the Defiant's cloaking device (e.g. there was already some history there).

By the time the war started with the Dominion, hadn't Sisko had some idea, he was more than just human....been a while since I saw any of DS9.

He was the emissary of the Prophets (Bajoran gods) but he saw them as another life form. I don't think he ever let the whole thing go to his head except the one time he had an accident and started becoming a bonafide "prophet" of the Universe but that did not last.

Soooo...no spoilers on the Discovery finale, but...wow. Good ending! Here's hoping it was half a spinoff series for this fall, because I'd watch the HELL out of that one!

I've been a huge advocate for Star Trek Continues, basically covering the final year (or two) of Enterprise's 5 yr mission.
The writers, producers, directors and those casting the roles have done this with immense justice. Even in the final episode, in SFB terms, a point blank shot on the Enterprise with a R torp is well demonstrated.
If you watch it, stay for the credits and you'll be surprised on the names you'll recognize.
Also, you'll be equally surprised of the quality of the research of the original series and how these episodes conform to them.
The acting is actually, and surprisingly, well done and these episodes (sets, props, details), in my opinion, are television worthy . . .
and it does a superb job of bridging the gap between 1701s final TV mission and "The motion picture".
Different actors of course, but you get used to it, and they do it well.
And if you pay attention, even the soundtrack.

and still no response. Honestly, this effort is worthy of a response.

Glenn, I've watched a lot of the ST Continues episodes, but I haven't kept up with them since Paramount's tiff with the Axanar people. I thought any fanfic films were going to be limited to vignettes of no more than 15 minutes, so I lost interest.

You missed out. The final two episodes of Star Trek Continues were epic. Kind of brings the series full circle, back to where it started.
By Glenn Hoepfner (Ikabar) on Friday, July 12, 2019 - 08:20 pm: Edit |
Douglas is absolutely correct. I've actually downloaded all 11 episodes. And the final episode is a two parter (two episodes) which brings to justice the bridge between Kirk's 5 yr mission and the motion picture.
Pay attention to the music, too.
And seriously, expect to sit for hours of the best of trek since TOS.

Oh, I forgot to add, some serious heart-wrenching moments, too.
And an excellent episode, "Divided We Stand".
By Douglas Saldana (Dsal) on Saturday, July 13, 2019 - 08:53 pm: Edit |
So much was done well with the series. Not just the sets and costumes (which I think they shared with some other fan productions), but subtle things like the lighting (TOS always had very distinctive lighting schemes). And it's clear that the actors really studied their roles. The guy playing Kirk is great and Chris Doohan is a dead ringer for his father, James Doohan.

very amusing. Especially if you have ever been tasked to do a powerpoint "deck" for some rando military guys that could care less.

I'm working on some Trek fiction stories. Naturally, my writing is "heavily influenced by" the SFB universe. However, as I don't think it's a good fit for ADB to publish (too long, more character driven, action sceens might not 100% rulebook perfect), there are a few thing I want to avoid.
In my world, Earth was visited several times by alien races in the past. We know that "The Preservers" made many stops between the time of Jesus and of Columbus, each time taking some humans and transplanting them on other worlds.
There was another race (or perhaps the same one) that did the same thing every few thousand years between 40 and 10 thousand years ago.
In my world, the "natives" of Alpha Centauri (who go by "Alphas") are close genetic cousins to Scandinavians. It appears they were among the last people removed from Earth about 10,000 years ago. Of course, many Alphas claim it was their people who were moved to Earth and became Swedish. The Alphas had just invented the electric light when Humans made first contact (against the advice of the Vulcans).
Likewise, in my world, the people of Cygnus have many genetic similarities to Neanderthals and Cro Magnon humans. Whereas Earth humans might have 2-3% Neanderthal DNA, Cygnans typically have 20-25% of that DNA.
Those backgrounds are similar to that of those in SFB, but changed a bit. I plan to have a few more planets populated by re-seeded Earth humans. I think in my world, Antareans will also be transplanted Humans, not Andorians (although I may re-seed them elsewhere).
I like the idea of Giants (Rigelians), Elves (Arcturian), and Dwarves (Prellarian). I don't mind using the name "Rigelian" because we saw them on-screen, but I -WILL- change the names Arcturian and Prellarian to something else. I'm not sure what to call them yet. Suggestions??
I haven't decided whether any of these (giants/elves/dwarves) are re-seeded Humans from Earth or something else. I do know that my elves and dwarves are taller than those in SFB.
My Tellarites are taller, too. If you search, you can easily find a photo of Kirk and Sarek speaking with Ambassador Gav. You'll notice that Gav is shorter than Kirk, but not by much, and his assistant almost Kirk's height.
I'm not sure if I'll keep the Deians (or the Deltans from ST:TMP), but I'd like to give them a different name, too, if I do keep them.
The last item I have to decide on, and it's a big one, is how to describe the police cutter. Should I use the SFB design, or should I totally divorce myself away from SFB to the point where I use a small (75-meter) saucer? If a saucer, make it round, like a FFG, or perhaps make it an oval?? Either way, it will have the same weapons suite as the SFB Fed POL does.
I have a bit more writing to go before the first installment is ready to post to Trek-BBS. Once I post it there, I'll be sure to post a link here.

Thanks for the encouragement, Norm. I can e-mail you a sneak-peak, if you like. The first segment is 6484 words, the second is 11,156 words, and I'm mid-way thru the third segment at 3500 words and counting.
I want to get segments four and five done before posting publicly.

I wish you would write it for SFU. We do print paperback books, you know. I would love to go further into that market, and your writing is good.
By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Friday, August 09, 2019 - 09:58 am: Edit |
I'll consider it, Steve. My problem is I can't write a combat scene. That's where I'm stuck right now. They just ran down a trader that's being used for (specific illegal activity). They can't beam over due to (plot device), so they have to force a boarding by shuttle. I'm trying to figure out how to make that happen. Once they get on the target ship, there will be a lot of pew pew pew.
