Discovery is like 900 years or so in the future from 1st/2nd seasons

Really?? It's worst than I thought with that type of time jump (now I have to wonder how long it will stay there ...)

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Sunday, December 20, 2020 - 08:26 pm: Edit

Stewart, we know the mirror universe Georgio left. No telling where the story is headed, other than to find the cause of the “burn.” Imagine if all warships in the SFB alpha Octant were suddenly restricted to using non tactical warp, and all battles had to be conducted at speed 1 hex per turn. About the only thing (other than monsters) moving at Speed 32 would be plasma torpedos. What fun.

Jessica: I am done with predictions where the Discovery writers are concerned. Continuity, Cannon and even Gene Roddenberry vision of Star Trek have all been sacrificed by the needs of a few money hungry hacks.

At least there is still Star Fleet Battles.

What kind of Cannon? A Hellbore Cannon?

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Sunday, December 20, 2020 - 08:55 pm: Edit

I hate spell check.

Jswile: and you're welcome to loathe it all you wish. I'll continue enjoying it regardless how much the Purity Police rail against it.

May whomever created spell check burn in he'll... :)

I keep a list of the 100 most commonly misspelled words. Fun times when I open it on someone else's computer and add them all to their custom dictionary. (Always lock your computer when stepping away for even a second.)

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Sunday, December 27, 2020 - 07:51 am: Edit

That's very bad behavior.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Sunday, December 27, 2020 - 01:40 pm: Edit

One could hope that Steven is using his list of commonly misspelled words as “A TEACHABLE MOMENT” tm.

Otherwise, beware of the old adage “there is always a bigger fish in the sea.” A practical joker must be aware that sooner or later he will cross paths with some one more motivated or malevolent who will not take a prank in a “let bye bones be bye bones” manner.

I heard of one such prankster who had his sub compact car physically picked up by the loading dock crew, and rotated 90 degrees so as to fit in the parking space side ways on cinder blocks, along with a polite posted request that he cease and desist all further practical jokes.

The fool then went to Human Resources to complain.

He didn’t know or remember all of the complaints made by his coworker/victims.

He survived that incident, but was terminated soon after when another prank was revealed.

One misspelling issue is the number of people using Phones (ie Crackberries) instead of computers...
Two... The rise of text and msg on phones and computers compared to actual voice conversations, where spelling wasn't necessary...
Three.. with the rise of txt, we got abbreviations and acronyms..

Personally, believe many just jump on misspellings as an excuse to change a argument they can't support....
Though there are cases when people just don't know what the error? means...

I worked at a place full of people who thought they were practical jokers. After a few months everyone decided that I was off limits. I could even put my lunch in the fridge and expect it to still be unopened come lunchtime.

Regarding wordplay errors, it was heartbreaking reading dispatches from mahogany row that read like something their children had dictated. I saw some so...unique...that I looked in their office to make sure they weren't having a stroke. (I have had a couple coworkers stroke out in front of me, so not joking.)

Okay, so the two-part fan-film "Pacific 201" is up on YouTube. If anyone else watched it, I have a question (in white to protect spoilers):

---
In Part 1, at 8:20, she says "We can match the harmonics and pull out," to which he replies, "We tried that. Warp drive accelerates the planet's breakup," so she advises the captain to attempt escape orbit using impulse drive.

My question: Seeing as the planet's going to break up anyway, why not use warp drive to get out????? I mean, by not using warp drive won't save the planet, right?? Did I miss something in the dialog?

Over on Trek-BBS, someone "recently noticed" that the TOS bridge is offset by 36-deg counter-clockwise. LOL.

Someone else posted their idea how to "fix" this issue. http://www.inpayne.com/temp/bridge.jpg I think that works really well, don't you?

Over on Trek-BBS, someone is posting art in the TAS style. Some really cool stuff, and his background stories fit the Trek theme.

Did anyone else catch the Kzinti (Starfleet officer!) on the last episode of lower decks?

Just a quick background shot in the ship's bar, scroll down a bit to see a screenshot:

So, Nick, just how do you catch a Kzinti? Not by the tail, I would think. By the scruff of the neck, perhaps, but that might be hard to do with that big mane in the way.

Kzinti? Or Slidarian?

By Jeff Anderson (Jga) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 12:52 am: Edit

IIRC, Niven wrote an episode for TAS featuring his Kzinti. If my memory isn't malfunctioning (always a consideration nowadays :)), that makes them Trek Canon.

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 09:51 am: Edit

Jga: Roddenberry declared the removal of TAS from canon in 1988. Whether or not he still had sufficient creative control over the franchise by that point to effect such removal is debatable; while Paramount acquiesced at the time, they've gradually moved back toward a "TAS is canon" position in the years since.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 11:23 am: Edit

The episode Niven wrote was a copy of Slaver Weapon with Spock replacing the puppeteer, not really new material. I always thought that they really wanted Niven's name and he didn't have time to create something new.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 11:58 am: Edit

I remember when I first watched that episode, it was before I had ever read anything by Niven but I found the episode fascinating for some reason.

By Nick Samaras (Koogie) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 05:53 pm: Edit

Kzinti were mentioned in an episode of Picard.

By Mike Dowd (Mike_Dowd) on Tuesday, September 07, 2021 - 09:22 pm: Edit

Kzinti were slated to show up in season 5 of Enterprise, if it had received a green light.
