Good treatment of the various incarnations of the Gorns. I don't get his idea that since he thinks Gorns look like Alligators their ships need to look like Alligators. He also thinks Alligators are slow. Good luck trying to outrun one of them.

Absolutely. Over relatively short distances alligators are both quick and very fast.

Alligators have been clocked over 20mph and have reached 30mph. The limit is about a hundred feet, but for the average obese American who hasn’t been to the gym since high school, that’s enough to make you into dinner. It’s not like you can stand your ground with a baseball bat.

Alligators and Tarantulas are very often incorrectly portrayed on the screen as slow. Live and in person they are definitely not.

Reminds me of my first encounter with a Scorpion, in Catholic school with it running down the hallway.

Camel spiders are very fast, too.

Well, I finally broke the plastic on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season one DVD set and binge-watched the whole thing. Yeah, I'm a bit behind on viewing my DVD collection.
Overall, I liked it. However, would I be alone in saying I despise how the Gorn were presented???

Certainly not alone.
Not just because it's annoying to those of us who are big fans of how ADB envisioned the Gorn...but it's also just lazy and internally inconsistent from a writing perspective. And nearly flatly contradicts the source material (TOS, TAS, and ENT episodes, and dialog references along the way).
Could have just given the species a different name and it would at least have eliminated conflicts with established lore...(although not really helped the writing...how does a primitive parasitic race develop warp, shield, and weapon technology equivalent to the Federation Star fleet??)
Still, the rest of SNW is solid enough, and I'll go ahead and pretend the species we saw was the 'Khorn' or 'Gorun' or something NOT the SFU/TOS Gorn...
(EDIT: Although, OTOH...how La'an says 'Gorn'...I mean, that outs her as a Romulan spy, right? Because that's definitely how I've always said 'Gorn'... )

Manny Coto, the showrunner for season 4 of Star Trek: Enterprise, passed away recently at the age of 62.

Also, has anyone here been watching season 2 of Strange New Worlds? And if so, what are your thoughts - BBS spoiler rules notwithstanding - on how this season is progressing thus far?

I'm thoroughly enjoying SNW, Gary. That said, I enjoy all Trek from TOS right on through to SNW, so there's that.

A general Star Trek question....the TOS established and created the Gorn, I hadn't heard of the Gorn Hegemony until SFB...so did ADB invent their government/organization or was it established prior somewhere other than the series.
By Nick Samaras (Koogie) on Thursday, August 10, 2023 - 03:39 pm: Edit |
I thought I remember hearing Riker mention the Gorn Hegemony in an episode of TNG. FASA called it the Gorn Alliance.
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Thursday, August 10, 2023 - 03:58 pm: Edit |
And we call it "The Gorn Confederation" (or "The Confederation of the Gorn").

Matthew Lawson:
No need to feel dumb. It is not something you deal with oh a daily basis. But SVC has written a lot of stuff about the Confederation government. and a few thing about the Klingon empire government, and stuff about the Hydra Kingdom, and the Lyrans, and . . . .

Yea, but have to wonder when he's adding the impulse engines as the midline looks too symmetrical.
