When we went to the top of Pike's Peak last spring, the gift shop/cafe up there did not accept cash. They would only accept cards or apps, even for a $1 doughnut.

It's all fine and dandy until there's a power failure or the network goes down. That's why I always have cash with me. But, I know, I'm a Luddite.

Ditch the penny and round to the nearest nickel.

(And if you say, "I'll never agree to rounding," I'll remind you that you do every time you buy gasoline, which is priced in tenths of a cent. Also, back in my .mil days, the Base Exchange and Commissary rounded everything to the nearest nickel, because Uncle Sam was entirely unwilling to ship over vast quantities of pennies that were never going to make it back home again.)

Rounding is the obvious answer, but like I said, no one has the political guts to actually do that. I think it would mean admitting that inflation got out of control and broke the economy.

Heck, the IRS, the guys who are meticulous about EVERYTHING, then rounds it all to the nearest dollar.

The penny has Lincoln on it. Illinois, and Chicago, still make a lot of bucks on Lincoln tourism.
Illinois does not want to lose Lincoln on the penny.

Fortunately, with northern states lose population, and southern states gaining it, at some point Illinois will not have the clout to keep the penny in circulation.

By Jack Bohn (Jackbohn) on Friday, October 04, 2024 - 08:29 pm: Edit

The main problem with the penny is you can't buy anything with it. Maybe at the hardware store you can get a bolt or small packet of screws for a handful of them, but they're mostly just bookkeeping tokens.

The debate on the penny is the debate on the nickel, if not already, in ten more years of inflation.

Pretzel stand at the local maul... Mall... Wouldn't take cash.

Told them "Cancel order; card is for emergency purposes only. No exceptions. If you won't give customer reasonable service, then you lose customer."

(I think I heard the cashier make reference to my resembling a certain orifice, which I'll leave to your imaginations... :))

"Uncle Sam was entirely unwilling to ship over" pennys?

NO coins are sent over. You get "pogs" instead of coins. Which get used up because you can't do anything with them other than buy stuff on bases.

We got POGs in the combat zones, but in UK and Germany we got coins, but rounded to the nearest nickel.

As an aside as an AAFES cashier in Germny my register was never off by more 50cents at the end o shift.

ie pennies

My understanding, hoarding even pennies is illegal..
Though on occasion, you see whole rooms tiles with them....

Pricing should be set at a point where tax ends up putting things at an even number...

Storm here in rural NC, businesses are all over the place, some cards only, some cash only etc....

Personally, live mostly on cash, when I can...

By Mike Grafton (Mike_Grafton) on Monday, October 07, 2024 - 08:15 am: Edit

It would be pretty straightforward to just round everything to the nearest 5 cents. Or 10.

It's an aberration that so much is priced at something.99

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Monday, October 07, 2024 - 09:34 am: Edit

That's not an aberration, Mike; it's psychological merchandizing. People see $9.99 and instinctively see it as significantly less than $10.00, despite the difference being negligible.

By Kenneth Humpherys (Pmthecat) on Monday, October 07, 2024 - 10:27 am: Edit

The $0.99 thing was also used (way back before sales tax when things actually cost 1 cent or even 1 mil) as a way to keep cashiers honest by forcing them to make change.

Caught a video...
Things to ponder, one was...

How many Royal Chefs were possibly executed, because the King's Taste Tester had a Food Allergy....

Very interesting thought....
