This topic exists to discuss our pets: our joy when they are with us, our worries when they are not well, and our sorrow when they leave us.

I hate it when a pet has life altering changes like losing half of their teeth.

In the last decade there have been seven possible sightings of Siberian Tigers in Alaska. These include huge feline footprints and long distance sightings. These are unconfirmed but there is no similar animal anywhere near there and the reports cannot be dismissed. (There have been hoax tiger sightings and photos but these seven are in the category of “not definitive but not dismissible.”) There are no known close photos, recovered poop, or confirmed kill sites. In theory someone could have released a pet tiger from the lower 48 states but this is unlikely and highly illegal.

Siberian tigers are known to have swum 20 miles in open oceans and would have no problem at all walking across the pack ice that happens up there most winters. There are 500+ Siberian tigers within 100 miles of the US-Russian border. That population is growing due to proper wildlife management and surplus males are being driven out of the region. Siberian tigers with radio collars have been tracked traveling 200 miles in the space of a year.

I for one welcome these illegal aliens and would be happy to send food, although they don’t seem to be starving.

On the other border, a few jaguars roam southern Arizona over the last two decades after being hunted to extinction by a US government program 35 years ago. These are surplus males biologically driven out of Mexico by other jaguars. No females have been seen in the US in 65 years. One problem is that unrelated US government programs are steadily closing the border to jaguars. The government has no interest in a program to reintroduce jaguars to government forests in Arizona and New Mexico. I find this an unconscionable failure of Biden and Trump.

While Jackie of the Big Bear Lake pair of Bald Eagles wasn't a pet we have sad news of her passing. She had been found in distress and rescued. She was in a specialty raptor treatment facility and they heroically tried everything they could to "fix" what was wrong with her.

Many of us have watched her and Shadow raise many chicks to fledglings and watched them fly away. From a scientific viewpoint it will be interesting to see if Shadow finds a new mate or even stay with the well established nest.
