Journey into the unknown british anthology search term

which shows Jessica was correct on the intro. Looks creepy!
Perhaps it was, "Knock On Any Door."?

This is totally misleading should by law be replaced: "Given the specifics of the intro sequence you remember, "Journey to the Unknown" is likely the show you are thinking of."

IIRC there is a discussion in Anathem of how the internet will inevitably become polluted by low quality stuff. And how a group (the Ita) use reputational scores to evaluate whether a given site is likely valid or just BS.

Yeah, the so called "shittification" of the internet. It's a consequence of the power money got in such an environment and there will likely be a regulatory backlash forcing break ups of the biggest companies.

Stated way back in '95, the internet is the greatest boon to crime, since prohibition.....
In MHO, it's even worse than that....

As to the series, is it "13 Demon Street"? That's the address of a house where Lon Chaney, Jr. is cursed to live until he finds a sin more grievous than the (untold) one he committed. The episodes are on Youtube. (All I know about it is what I looked up researching "The Devil's Messenger," an anthology movie using three of the episodes with Chaney filming new introductions under a different continuity; he is a functionary of Hell, sending a condemned soul around to make sure certain props are in the right place to play their part in each story.)

Ryan: I found that list a few years ago, but gave up scrolling because too much of it was too recent.
Randy: All I can find on "Knock On Any Door" shows it to be a movie, not a TV series, so I doubt that's what I'm looking for.
Jack: That looks a lot like what I remember, but not quite right.
However, in looking into the clues everyone has provided, I suspect that the ~50 year old memories of a young child may have combined two or more different shows my parents watched into one conglomerated memory. I have recognized some portions of the "13 Demon Street" intro, some episode intros from the early 70s "Thriller" (British program), Boris Karloff narrating the 1960 US "Thriller", maybe even the house from the intro to the soap opera "Dark Shadows".
Thanks to everyone for your insights.

Yeah, I understand about combining memories. I hesitated to mention "Darkroom" because it ran for only half a season in 1981, but it opened with a more active camera trip through a house, although only to the one specific room, where James Coburn introduced the story while holding some random piece of photographic equipment. If you saw that, it may have contributed.

Just got done watching the second season of the new "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" series though Amazon Prime/Paramount+.
I was shockingly surprised at how much I've enjoyed this series. It's MUCH closer to the original Star Trek, but with high production values, good writing, excellent acting, and a good story. Most importantly, while it's clear that ST:SNW still has the philosophical/political agenda that ST has always had, it's not repeatedly beating you over the head with a mace like more recent ST series (like Discovery). Instead, it focuses more on good stories. For example, I like what they did with the Gorn in ST:SNW).
After the boondoggle that was the "Star Trek: Discovery" series (and it was bad), I almost didn't give ST:SNW a chance. I'm glad I did.

I could not agree more Ted. Its sticks much more closely to TV as an entertainment medium and has kept the messaging (which has always been in StarTrek BTW) to a minimum focusing as you say on higher quality acting/storylines/and most importantly action with intelligence.

I'll give the the first episode of ST:SNW a try and see how I like it. It's been so long since any "new" ST has been interesting to me, I'd largely given up.

As to ST:Disco "boondoggle" was being nice Ted.

Mike once you are hooked and done with the second season you should read some of the actors commentary about how much they enjoy working on the show. (But not before as they drop in a lot of spoilers).
There is a specific episode in the 2nd season (no spoilers given) that is a love it or hate it episode. I will say the actors were extremely challenged by this episode in particular but really enjoyed doing it, and reading their commentary actually changed my mindset about it.
By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Friday, July 19, 2024 - 05:49 pm: Edit |
@Lawrence: Perhaps you're referring to the episode where [WARNING SPOILER IN WHITE] everyone had no choice but to break out into song when emotional? Personally, I loved it. I am a semi-professional singer, so I'm in a good position to criticize the technical aspects of the performances. I *loved* this episode. My daughters ran from it due to the "cringe" factor, but personally I thought they did a *fantastic* job. All of the actors could sing well. The compositions were original and well done. Each song was specific to the character and to the story. My favorite was the dancing and singing Klingons in their gold-glam armor. I freaking laughed my head off! (In a good way!) The performers did a wonderful job acting like they were being forced into the "dishonor". Classic.
OK, that was my spoiler and commentary. Just emphasizing that the show is well done, IMO.
ST:SNW also has some good thought-provoking episodes without going too far down the agenda-hammering path.
Anyway, I don't mind that level of agenda, which has always been part of Trek. As a creative writer myself, I've come to understand that it's hard NOT to put in agenda. Your beliefs are bound to come across no matter what, as all creative types are going to put their beliefs into their stories (knowingly or unknowingly). I just hate it when the agenda is overwhelming, sanctimonious, and unnecessary for the story. Like ST:Disco Inferno, where spurious logic abounds as to why only bad people don't think like they do - or worse - emotional appeals that have no basis in rationality. Ruins the entertainment.
Anyway, I hope there's a season 3 of ST:SNW - and - they keep up the good work.
*Finally* new Trek worth watching.

Season 3 of SNW wrapped filming about a month ago, should be out in Spring 2025.
As an SFB/F&E player, I have to give a special shout-out to what they did with S01E10. Watch it back-to-back with TOS: Balance of Terror.
In addition to the agreed compliments others have given, I like the way they change up genre. Heist? Mystery? Horror? Thriller? Legal drama? And more...

Saw something new on YouTube that just came out; a fan production called, "Forbidden Planet: Children of the Krel, Chapter 1" by an artist called Philip Browne.
As a fan of the original movie, I found it different, but VERY respectful. Characters look (and sound) different (except Robbie ) and it introduces story elements that would never have been put in, back in the 1950's, but I enjoyed it like crazy and highly recommend it, despite it coming across as an amateur CGI project.

Finally dropped Netflix in favor of Apple+ yesterday, and got to see the first episode of "For All Mankind". As SVC has previously noted here, it really is a splendid show; I look forward to making my way through the four seasons currently available.

THE WALL
This is an Austrian movie on Amazon mostly dubbed in English. A woman waiting at a hunting lodge for her friends discovers that an invisible wall has cut her off from the rest of the world. She lives for three years with a cow, a dog, and a cat. The movie eventually ends without ever explaining anything. Way too long, it is incredibly boring. Don’t waste three hours on this sad story of … well, we never do learn what it was about.

I have to admit I'm really impressed by a lot of the new Star Trek. SNW, Lower Decks, Prodigy are all very nice.
One thing I love about Lower Decks, is that save for the first few episodes (which were apparently mandated by corporate), the crew is competent, very much so.
Maybe not as good as the ships that regularly fight alien gods, but very much capable at their jobs, and a fair number seem to be happy in their position.
Which I like, because when the series was first put out, I figured that "oh great, they'll do this by making these people idiots." and they didn't.
This is the last season, and I'm not unhappy. Not every show can go on forever, and this way, they writers will be able to end the show and it's arc without suddenly finding out three days before they are due to write the last episode that it's over (or worse yet, not know and just leave it forever hanging). Also, I like the idea of a show going out on a high note, instead of going until nobody cares.
Also, on another note: The Cerritos is the only Starfleet ship I could ever see myself on and not hiding in a closet sucking my thumb as we get sent on our next mission to face certain death.
By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Monday, October 28, 2024 - 08:49 am: Edit |
I've enjoyed the heck out of Lower Decks, and am sad that we're in the final season.
That said, I'm really looking forward to third season of Strange New Worlds next year. It hits an excellent blend of stand-alone episodes, story arcs, and the occasional Original Series willingness to laugh at itself.

A friend of mine just gave his review of Lower Decks:
An ignored ship, last on the list for any budgets, half hte people don't even know it exists, and yet is vital to the running of the federation, keeping all the boring stuff working...
