Tholian TK5, Orion medium raider, large and small armed freighter, Fed HDW, Klingon E7, Gorn FF, Romulan SeaHawk, Tholian CWL, ...

Daniel also did empire-specific versions of Q-ships, base stations, monitors, defense satellites.

That Orion on the cover is the same one as on the cover of Orion Attack, seen from a distant angle! Nice tie in :)

Lovely cover art.

One question about the Neo-Tholian ships: Are the particle cannon and disruptor variants of each ship offered side-by-side, or is only one type offered for each class?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, November 29, 2010 - 07:33 pm: Edit

I really don't know. I would bet he only did one kind.

I *could* be wrong but I'm not finding any particle cannons in the book. Yes. I am wrong...

• Particle Cannon: RNG 15, ROF 1, ACC 4+, IMP 2, DMG 1

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 12:43 am: Edit

Thanks for the clarification.

For future reference, I'd request that any other Neo-Tholian ships brought over, such as the NBB, be offered in both disruptor and particle cannon flavours, when the time comes for their publication.

(I guess it's a bit early to start asking for revisions to the Alien Armada ship pages...)

By Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 01:29 am: Edit

Gary, the way that Starmada's ship design system works, the particle cannons are likely to have different point costs and occupy different amounts of space in the ship than disruptors. So it'd require a bit of recalculation.

A player who really wanted to play a scenario set in M81 could, using the data presented in Alien Armada and the Starmada rules, perform the required calculations himself. Given that most scenarios involving Tholians are going to be in this galaxy anyway, it makes more sense for the Neos to be shown as having disruptors.

By Ken Burnside (Ken_Burnside) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 01:42 am: Edit

I am curious as to why the Particle Cannon in Starmada is this:

Particle Cannon: RNG 15, ROF 1, ACC 4+, IMP 2, DMG 1

rather than this:

Particle Cannon: RNG 15, ROF 2, ACC 4+, IMP 1, DMG 1

In SFB, a single particle cannon can engage two different ships - hence getting the damage via increasing ROF rather than IMP.

We've been toying with the idea of a "reinforcements" pack and we could easily include alternate weapon Orions and particle cannon Neos.

KB: You'd have to ask somebody (e.g., Daniel K) as I have no idea what any of that Urdu means.

Are there titles for the future SFU Armada modules?

I like the obvious "Battleship Armada" for the Battleships Attack and Boosters 16-18 module.

I really like "Galactic Armada" for the War and Peace module with ISC and Andros.

"Carrier Armada" would work for a fighters (for everyone) and maybe gunboats module.

The Hydran/Lyran one seems like it should be "Distant Armada" based on the FC title but I am not sure how catchy that name is.

By Ken Rodeghero (Ken_Rodeghero) on Thursday, December 02, 2010 - 08:50 am: Edit

"Invading Armada" is kind of catchy, though. For what module, I don't know. Maybe that is more appropriate for ISC/Andro than "Galactic Armada."

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, December 02, 2010 - 09:51 am: Edit

The next one will be the DK=HA one, which could be....

Distant Armada
Western Armada
Lyran Armada
Hydran Armada
Star Fleet Armada
Four Powers Armada

Or something else.

Then, before we do Battleships Armada, I am thinking we might do either Star Fleet Starmada Reinforcements, or Star Fleet Starmada Middle Years.

I got my copy of Alien Armada today; I had a few notes I wanted to make about it.

*There is no entry discussing Particle Cannon rules in the Star Fleet Universe Summary of pages 12-25.

*There seems to be an error on page 15. The second half of the Shield Cracker/Web Breaker rule (after the web breaker chart) repeats the information from the Web Caster/Web Fist rules on the same page. Presumably there was meant to be a note about how the device is to be used in shield cracker mode. Never mind, they are distinct; they are worded very similarly, so I got caught out on the first look though. Well, there still is a mistake; the shield cracker mode is mistakenly referred to as a "web fist".

*The Weapons list on page 16 includes both standard and overload entries for Particle Cannons, but none of the Seltorian ship diagrams include a note about the overload function. (In contrast, entries for weapons such as disruptors and photon torpedoes on other ship diagrams include both standard and overload options.)

*To go back to the note I made earlier in the thread about hoping to see the Neo-Tholian ships be presented with the disruptor and particle cannon versions offered side-by-side, I might note that the Tholian War Cruiser entry on page 75 presents disruptor- and photon-armed variants together; indeed, the CW's description on page 18 explicitly mentions that both variants are presented here.

*While it's not an issue per se, I did note that most of the Orion ships seem to have been equipped as phaser boats; only a handful have anything other than Phaser-1s in their option mounts. It will be interesting to see how this works out for Orion players.

Well, in Starmada, you fire a weapon once per turn with one target. This is one of those things that gets "lost in translation" from SFB/FC to Starmada. In Starmada, weapons which have a high ROF/low impact are likely to score at least some hits, but each hit does little damage. Sort of a sandpaper effect. Disruptors are like this. Other weapons have low ROF but a lot of Impacts, making them "shock weapons". Photons are an example.

Will Alien Armada be available on e23? If so, does anyone know when?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, December 17, 2010 - 04:42 pm: Edit

Terry, we are working on it.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, December 17, 2010 - 04:53 pm: Edit

It has been uploaded and should appear any time now.

Thanks. Looks like I was too impatient by a few hours!

I bought both the Alien Armada rules and ship cards but it appears that the ship cards product also contains the rules. Is this by design? The product description does not seem to indicate this and it deviates from the way that Klingon and Romulan Armada were done electronically. Also, the ship cards product says it is 58 pages on e23 but is actually 86 pages with both the rules and ship cards.

Ken, Leanna has been told about this. When did you download yours? We need to know so that we know if this is an old problem or a continuing one.

[Edited to request info.]

By Ken Rodeghero (Ken_Rodeghero) on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - 09:49 am: Edit

I downloaded them both on 12/17/2010.

I think that has been fixed by now. It's not supposed to have rules and ships in one file.
