MARKERS
Blue on white with black crosses on opfire
Klingon black on white with white crosses on opfire
Romulans red on white with black crosses
Kzintis gold with black crosses
Gorns white disk red cross
Tholians red with wite cross
ISC yellow with black crosses
Orions blue with white crosses
Hydrans green with white crosses
Andros green with black crosses
Lyrans yellow with green crosses
wyns red with yellow
Ldr Green with white crosses
Vudar Black with yellow crosses
Paravians red with gold
Seltorians brown with white
Carnivons green with gold
Jindarians gray with black

My current plan would only provide 12 colors not 18 so I think we can just leave out the conflicting ones and everyone can find something to use. However, I did just think of a way to use 80 opfire counters to cover 18 empires.

opfire

Sheet 1
20 Fed
20 Klingon
10 each of 4

Sheet 2
20 gorn
20 kzinti
10 each of four

Sheet 3
20 rom
20 lyran
10 each of four

My understanding is that the Jindarians tend to avoid combat on "terrestrial" planetary surfaces if at all possible, due to their "nomadic" nature.

Although, I suppose one could imagine them seeking to clear the surface of a given asteroid or dwarf planet from hostile forces (such as robotic Andromedan boarding parties) - not least over in Omega's Jindarian Freehold.

In any case, I was wondering if it might be an option to reassign at least some of the Jindarian counters listed above to represent "rebel" Marine squads instead, based on one or more of the various colour schemes offered over in F&E Civil Wars?

Or, would it be a better option to wait for a future product to offer a set of Kzinti, Lyran, Romulan, Orion, and/or Carnivon "civil war" counters all together at once?

I think REBEL ROUNDUP might be the next product!

Ooooh...alien planets...MOON BASES...

I like what I see, Xander

We could consider a series of 8.5x11 color maps, as that would be practical for small quantity boutique production.

By Simon Duggan (Gamegater) on Saturday, August 22, 2026 - 03:58 pm: Edit

Humm seeing that moonbase gives me an idea. Without changing rules and such. What if you had an interior with rooms and corridors that are a hex wide? Or a city/town where the road is a hex or two wide.

You use the main map to invade the city, then change to a city map for the city fight, and then a building/base map for corridors and rooms.

Or just have scenarios for each level of map.

Just the scale of the hex changes, but all rules would stay the same.

eg: Marines will still only fire 3 hexes, regardless of what map, Primes 5 hexes. etc

By Simon Duggan (Gamegater) on Saturday, August 22, 2026 - 05:23 pm: Edit

Maybe one rule change, If using the City, Maybe allow only 2 stacks, if Interior then no stacking allowed.

By Jeff Anderson (Jga) on Saturday, August 22, 2026 - 05:49 pm: Edit

I have the rules, but haven't played. Still, "Common Sense" makes me ask if the hostility of the environment might lead to rules changes? Minor "Wounds" become life-threatening, due to the hostile environment? What might be "Just a Scratch" in a jungle turns into a perforated space suit in a vacuum.

Also, what sort of mobility penalties are incurred due to the bulk and lack of flexibility of protective environment gear?

For that matter, as a fan of the James Bond film, "Thunderball," the hostile environment under water. How might that impact mobility and extra damage from the environment?

Sigh. Starting to get a story idea. Will break out rules...

Oh well. It'll make for an enjoyable afternoon... :)

Jean is going to want something better than REBEL ROUNDUP.

Rebellion?

"Civil Wars" is out as we just did an F&E product with that name.

Civil Strife?

The Irregulars?

Revolts and Revolutions?

Uncivil Actions?

How about Star Fleet Marines: Usurpation?

As a nod both to the Usurper War of the Early Years, as well as to the in-the-process-of-being-formally-printed War of Return scenario over in Federation and Empire.

-----

I would welcome a broader variety of rules covering various terrain and/or atmospheric conditions (or lack thereof) - as well as certain species-specific rules affecting how their actions would be impacted, one way or another, in said conditions.

For example: over in SFB, both Jindarian and Uthiki crews typically operate in microgravity conditions, which imposes penalties when either attempt to board ships with "standard" gravity on board (and vice versa). There are no such penalties for boarding actions between Uthiki and Jindarian ships, though there would be few instances of this being a factor historically.

Interestingly enough, even "robotic" Andromedan or Drex boarding parties do not gain any exceptions here. Perhaps both empires build their respective robot Marines to operate at "standard" gravity levels, which to be fair would cover most of their required use cases in any event.

In any case, battles in low- or microgravity conditions here in SFM could, perhaps, account for similar variations in turn.

By Simon Duggan (Gamegater) on Sunday, August 23, 2026 - 12:30 pm: Edit

I like 'species-specific rules', always thought, Phasers for Federation, Disruptors for Klingon, Plasma for Romulan, etc....

Feds tend to favour Stuns over out right killing.
Klingons tend to favour Agony.

But then it will be a balance nightmare, so maybe not.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, August 23, 2026 - 12:46 pm: Edit

In the end, you rendered the target incapable of participating further in the battle. Or you didn’t.

humm, true... Point Taken... :D

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Sunday, August 23, 2026 - 01:46 pm: Edit

There are empire-specific differences in "personal" weapon types, plus how they are used by the empire in question, in the various empire sourcebooks (Federation, Klingon, and Romulan) currently in print for the Prime Directive RPG.

Such details are below the scale used for SFM.

Although, there was talk at some point about a "skirmish" game system which (if I recall correctly) would be set to one Marine per unit, rather than one squad per unit. Perhaps such a scale of play might be better placed to account for one empire's choice of weapon designs over another, some day.

By Simon Duggan (Gamegater) on Sunday, August 23, 2026 - 02:21 pm: Edit

There was talk about a Skirmish Game? I thought about using one page rules and add a Federation Like army list and a Klingon like army list sort of based on SFM.

For example based on Battle Brothers or maybe Human Defense Force:

Marines = Troops
Commando = Infiltrators
Heavy Weapon = Heavy Weapon
Prime = Veterans
HQ = Named Character
APV = Rino
GCV = Razorback
GAV = Predator

Go with the obvious?

Star Fleet Marines: A House Divided

...or make it more SciFi...

Star Fleet Marines: Uprisings
Star Fleet Marines: The Ashes of Empire
Star Fleet Marines: Insurrection

(Last one sounds SO GOOD...but that's literally the name of a Star Trek movie, so maybe not a good idea to poke that bear? Dunno.)

By Alan W Kerr (Awkerr) on Sunday, August 23, 2026 - 06:26 pm: Edit

I like Jeff's suggestion of:
Revolts and Revolutions

It gets the idea across... that the product is
more of the "small and medium" events and not
something the size of a Civil War.

By Xander Fulton (Dderidex) on Monday, August 24, 2026 - 12:47 pm: Edit

Waitwaitwait...what about pluralizing the name so it isn't an exact copy of the movie?

Star Fleet Marines III: Insurrections

*Bam* Problem solved - my work here is done!

(Well, unless more maps becomes a direction, in which case my work is just starting...)

By Jeff Anderson (Jga) on Monday, August 24, 2026 - 04:22 pm: Edit

Respectfully, Xander, for too many people, their eyes just don't catch that last letter; there're too many similarities, especially with a word that's twelve (to thirteen) letters long.

Quite honestly, because of a Prime Directive module, I didn't bother suggesting "Uprisings," even though that may be an even better description of things.
