Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Warlord: Hey Paul!!!: Archive through October 12, 2005

OK, I'll be the first to use this.
When Pagoda mailed our turns to us, I was able to manipulate the maps with Paint prog & produce an 8.5" X 11.0" map. For some reason I can't do the same with the files you sent to me. Any ideas?

By Kenneth Jones (Kludge) on Monday, August 08, 2005 - 06:42 pm: Edit

Randy,

Have you tried doing a screen capture of the map and pasting it into paint?

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Monday, August 08, 2005 - 07:13 pm: Edit

Randy,
That is probably because the GIF file is not a scanned in image of the map. But is instead a GIF produced by reading the actual SFW files. If you want me to make it largerr that is no problem. I just sent a one that is doubled the size to Norman for his approval.

I managed to get it doubled in size, but the darn thing is still in landscape, I really want to get it in portrait so I can place it in a slickie. Still experimenting.

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Tuesday, August 09, 2005 - 05:03 pm: Edit

Randy,
That is wierd. Usually, portrait or landscape is a function of the page setup.

Question: What program are you using to double the size?

Paul

I used Windows Viewer to get it doubled in size.

Randy,
Have you tried going clicking on the "Properties..." button after you press the Print icon? There should be a tab like "Feature" (that is what my HP printer has) that allows you to specify the orientation. (i.e. portrait or landscape mode)

Also, depending upon the version of Windows if you bring up Paint (from the Accessories submenu) and then load the .gif file there. Paint gives you more control. Like how big you want the margins, etc.

BTW, the next Map that will be sent will be larger. I think I found the proper size to fill the whole page.

Hey Paul
Is it a 10X10 universe , 8X10 ??????
Thanks DOC

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 10:39 pm: Edit

Arthur,
It is an 8x8 as was asked for due to the low number of players. Sorry, if I didn't state that with the initial Email

Paul,

Are you planning on more players joining DH 20? With an 8x8 layout you have room for 16 players.
With 12 players you could have went with an 8x6 layout for 48 sectors. All the DH games were orginally designed to offer 4 sectors per player so 25 players = 100 sectors.

Randy,
There were no plans for it.

How are you dealing with friends in the same game. I have 2 friends that should be signing up this week for the standard SFW game and some cage game matches. I can email you which players they are once they sign up. I know how it used to be done. I just would like a new official ruling.

Bryan,
I have not come up with a policy on references. Let me think about it tonight. I will announce a policy tomorrow. I will probably credit your account so much, like a free turn or something along those lines.

Slight missunderstanding. I think free turns are great, for references. I am not concerned with references.

I was thinking more on the lines of friendily players being near each others home sectors, to start. Example: We used to have to report thoses who are friends for these reasons: 1)so that we would get placed in the same game. 2)so that our starting home sectors were not placed adjacent. Example: friendly player one Sector 00, friendly player two Sector 02, friendly player three Sector 20.

Before email, the only way you new of another player was if they were friends, or an encounter sometime after turn 3. It was an advantage. Now it is not so much of an advantage if people post there information on these discussion boards. Understand I have not played since 1996 (before email). I don't want to upset other players because of a strategic advantage. I hope this clears things up.

Bryan S.
When A1 was running the game you could ask to be near someone. No problem. You could also ask not to be near someone, keep enemy away from you. That was part of the game. He had a few problems with a friend droping early and sending the map to his friend.Any player who drops early and his home sector has not been scanned by any one, A1 would change the map to a new one. This solved the problem.
Your better off with your friend on the other side of the map. Attack from 2 directions and plenty of room to expand.

Arther,
Sorry, had minor problem with schedules and a crash in the SFW engine that I had to recovert from. The reports went out just a little bit ago. (I actually ran them last night but I have not had a chance to process the reports from the SFW engine and send them)

Arthur,
You are currently the only one to experience the problem. I am going to send a test fax today to see if I can duplicate the problem.

Arthur,
I think it is your fax machine. I will scan a fax or two and Email you a link so that you can see what I am seeing.
