How do you defend, including Home Offices.

The big ships for staying power in battle. The K-C9A is a must. A DF of 100 and the SFG kills the enemies tactics bonus (instant 15% reduction...alot of players; Gene excluded: rely on the bonus and count it in). Another good thing with the Klinks is the unlimited supply of BB's (every other race is limited to a single BB; IMHO something that needs to be fixed).
After that I use a bunch of cheap ships as fire deviders. The Rom obsoletes are good for this...A 20 ship HO defense with 10 R-WB/HS/SNS is attacked by a 1000 AF fleet. 1000/20=50. The Roms all die turn one but your big guns (the DNs and BBs get a second round to kill off the rest of the attacking fleet.
The important thing is the big ships though...your HO is too important to entrust it to Cruiser types that may die in 1 turn.

The best way to defend is to attack! Your multi-game winners will tell you this every time. If you allow yourself to be forced back to defend your HO you will NEVER win a game. Your vets build almost no Home defenses unless they absolutely have to. All their income is going to buy ships to attack YOU with and force YOU on the defensive.
How do you defend with the attack? Their are two methods--(1) go after the enemies WG and accompaning fleet with everything you have OUTSIDE of your Home Sector. Even if you lose every ship but manage to kill his WG you win since he cannot now reinforce the survivors of that battle. You on the other hand, can still buy ships at your WG or HO.
(2) Get your WG past his fleet and hit his HO before he can hit yours. This takes guts and timing but actually works more often than #1. Your enemy must decide wether to buy ships for his attack or for defense or both. You on the other hand, have alredy committed to killing his HO first so all of your purchases are going for the attack fleet.

IF you want to see how to defend your HO look no further then Timberwolves in DH9. Bounced a 62 ship attack fleet. That fleet is now RUNNING, trying to get away before I destroy it. IN a DH game the death of this many ships can be the difference between winning and losing. Thus, Timberwolves STILL has shot to win DH9 even if it is an outside shot. So in other words you do NOT have to always attack to win a game. Unlike what Randy said. I HAVE won several games using defense as the tool to victory. Admittly, it is harder to do this way but it is POSSIBLE! On top of that, it is the ONE sure way NOT to die in a game. In the end though you have to hope you catch your opponnet's fleet and kill it. At least that is what I am gonna try in DH9.

Todd, that fleet that you have defending your HO is now stuck there and every turn you will need to add to it. The game is over for you, you just are the walking dead and do not know it. I agree with the Wingman, you have no chance as long as 50% of your fleet is tied up in home defense. One other thing, Jerry Morris does not run, I think you need to take a closer look.

On defense the above does apply. In O1 I was forced back into the defensive due to being stupid. This has caused me to put almost 100 hulls on the HO. Will I survive the game, yes, but it sure aint much fun.
