With my experimenting so far, I believe the same model can most likely be used for both 15mm and 25mm scales. To do 6mm a new model would have to be made, so we're looking at twice as much work.
Another note is Shapeways supposedly has a 1 million polygon limit; I have a complete Gorn model that is a couple hundred thousand over that mark. The software I use can simplify that and there are others out there that can, but it can affect overall detail on some models...probably no individual hairs on the Slirdarian!

I've been meaning to dabble with MeshLab for optimizing polygon density, but there is too much work to be done right now to allow time for experimenting (I only needed it if I needed to receive meshes from other people and import them into Solidworks, which is math/geometry-based rather than meshes).
I also want to learn the interface to InkScape, so I can finally retire my ancient version of FreeHand for 2D drawing.
Maybe someday...

MeshLab is really great for reducing polygons and a bunch of other things that I don't use. Not the easiest learning curve.

Another thing to look at

Is that a planet killer it's holding?

It's a gornacopia.

He just wanted to play the Planet Killer scenario, but no one wanted to due to his anger issues. . .

It looks difficult to do shapes, does the species have reptilian skin.

Final versions would hopefully have some detailing like fur lines and scales. I'm still working with getting basic designs down.

The structure looks good.

Aside from the primary race of the major Empires, what other alien species would people like to see as a miniature?
By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Saturday, September 08, 2018 - 12:28 pm: Edit |
I would buy Klingon subject species, major Federation member species and the ISC member species. Basically anything with art and a profile for Prime Directive.

A Frax

For a Frax we could get a Klingon in a sailor suit.

Federation weapons
We're checking to see if Shapeways can print actual working models of the weapons.

It could be a trick of perspective in the image, but the hand holding the phaser seems small.

Cool but where is the snow shovel handle TOS-phaser rifle
By Matthew G Lawson (Mglawson) on Monday, September 10, 2018 - 05:08 pm: Edit |
I'll double check the phaser hand, the program doesn't have ortho views, so just about everything is perspective.
There are a few things to note about the figures and Shapeways.
1. Shapeways caps out at 1 million polygons, right now this model is around 800k, and there are ways to reduce the count without making the model suffer, but some creatures that have fur or scales, may not get all the detail.
2. The phaser and communicator are just place holders right now, so they look a little funny because of the way the software converts them.
3. This guy is basic Star Fleet uniform, if you want other things like a holster or utility pockets like the PD artwork, let me know.

You have phaser & communicator, perhaps you could do:
Just phaser
Phaser & tricoder
Just tricoder
Tricoder & communicator.
When you do females, I would suggest pants instead of the mini-skirt. That uniform is about useless for Away Missions.

There are a lot of options, which is detrimental to my health, lol.
Our tentative plan is to launch with 12:
2x Fed M/F
2x Fed M/F
2x Rom M/F
1x all other major races (6).
Add in all the other race options then there could be hundreds of combos of gear.
I agree with the miniskirt, but at the same time, people may want that too.
It would be cool to do requests, but I don't know if sales would warrant that.
By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Monday, September 10, 2018 - 06:59 pm: Edit |
We need miniskirts.
The Empire Earth versions will need halter tops as well.
We have point-to-point transporter tech, so no need for pockets. Anything you need from your room will be beamed directly to you (and put away again when you're done with it). Anything not in your room will be fabbed by the replicator and sent to you.
For safety reasons, please hold still until the transporter operation is complete.
