End of mission, release complete
By John Williams (Johndw) on Wednesday, November 06, 2019 - 10:04 am: Edit |
I actually kinda like these 7000 sized core/builder sets for fleets, seems like a good size. I'm wondering though, some of them are only available in the Smooth/Smoothest fine detail plastic, while others are available in the white natural versatile plastic. Any reason for this?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, November 06, 2019 - 11:49 am: Edit |
It just depends on which materials will print things that small. Not all 7000s have the same size pointy bits.
By John Williams (Johndw) on Wednesday, November 06, 2019 - 01:21 pm: Edit |
Ahhh. Yeah that makes sense, I was hoping there'd be a little less expensive option for some of 7000 sets, but I think I can work with what's available.
By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Wednesday, November 06, 2019 - 03:02 pm: Edit |
Things like the bitsy Kzinti "arms" are just too thin for the Versatile Plastic. When possible, I gave folks that option. However, the sculptors' directions are that the only material that it must pass in is the Fine Detail Plastic.
There may be some that actually won't print in Versatile Plastic once the engineers get involved. For those, I'll remove that option rather than ask the sculptors to fix it.
By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Thursday, November 07, 2019 - 01:25 pm: Edit |
I've noticed a few oddities when checking the smaller models in Versatile Plastic, especially when it happily greenlights a 1/7000 model that it was heatmapping with a vengeance at 1/3788.
I'm curious if the checker is simply skipping past the surface details under a certain size and relying on post-purchase manual checks. We may have to wait for their engineers' thumbs up/down on some of these.
By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Thursday, November 07, 2019 - 10:36 pm: Edit |
I haven't paid attention to the VP checks in 7k scale, but I have noticed frequently that something that passes checks in 3788 will not pass them in 3125. There appears to be a threshold below which things get disregarded, but it changes with the size of the model.
I am pleased that most of the phaser bumps came out OK in my Smooth Detail test print of the Lyran sprue; the DD and FF were the worst off - the side phasers on them are barely discernable.

ADB Releases Ships for November, 2019
On October 31, 2019, ADB released a total of 41 new items to its shop on Shapeways. That brings our shop to over 1,800 items. There are some styles of ships designed to work within the price increase that Shapeways imposed. Notably we added the 7000 Scale that is similar to the older Elite Scale (1/7000). These currently are being released in two different collections. The Core Collection for each empire has one each of the six most common ships of that empire. The Builder Collections have six ships (multiple copies of some) that would create a common fleet when combined with the Core Collection. We also added another ship in the new, larger scale that we named the 2500 Scale (Prestige Scale) which is 1/2500. These larger ships are perfect for one-on-one tabletop duels. They can always be used as a display model when not being used for battles.
The Federation gets its 2500 Scale Heavy Cruiser (CAR), and the 7000 Scale Core Collection (dreadnought, battlecruiser, heavy cruiser, new light cruiser, war destroyer, and frigate), and Builder Collection (three frigates, two war destroyers, and a new light cruiser).
The Klingons gain their 7000 Scale Builder Collection (one D5 war cruiser, two F5W war destroyers, and three of the ubiquitous F5 frigates). The Core Collection is scheduled for release in December 2019.
The Romulans get their original Condor Dreadnought. Because of the way their fleet is designed, they have multiple releases in the 7000 Scale. They have their Eagle Core Collection (Vulture, King Eagle, War Eagle, Falcon Mauler, BattleHawk, and Snipe) and Eagle Builder Collection (two each of War Eagle, BattleHawk, and Snipe), Hawk Core Collection (Condor, FireHawk, RoyalHawk, SparrowHawk, SkyHawk, and SeaHawk) and Hawk Builder Collection (a SeaHawk, two SkyHawks, two SparrowHawks, and a FireHawk), and Hawk Refit Core Collection (Condor, FireHawk, RoyalHawk, SparrowHawk, SkyHawk, and SeaHawk) and Hawk Refit Builder Collection (a SeaHawk, two SkyHawks, two SparrowHawks, and a FireHawk). The "Refit" indicates it is a late-war "Cranked Arrow" design in the style of the Starline 2500 Romulan ships which these are based on.
The Tholians gain multiple releases in the 7000 Scale. They have their Tholian Core Collection (dreadnought, heavy cruiser, war cruiser, destroyer, patrol corvette, police cutter), and Builder Collection (one war cruiser, two destroyers, two patrol corvettes, and a police cutter) as well as the Neo-Tholian Core Collection (dreadnought, heavy cruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, and two frigates) and Builder Collection (two each of the light cruiser, destroyer, and frigate).
The Seltorians get their Core Collection (dreadnought, battlecruiser, heavy cruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, and frigate) and Builder Collection (heavy cruiser, light cruiser, two destroyers, and two frigates) in the 7000 Scale.
The Gorns gain their Alectrosaurus Light Dreadnought (in the new ACTASF book) and Heavy Medium Cruiser in both the regular and refitted versions. They also get their battlestation in both the regular and augmented forms.
The Kzintis get their Core Collection (dreadnought, heavy battlecruiser, battlecruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, and frigate) and Builder Collection (a new heavy cruiser, two medium cruisers, two war destroyers, and a frigate) in the new 7000 Scale.
The Lyrans and their wayward county of the Lyran Democratic Republic get their Jaguar-H Heavy War Cruiser (the 3125 Scale also has a kit version of this). The Lyrans also gain their Core Collection (dreadnought, battlecruiser, heavy cruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, and frigate) and Builder Collection (war cruiser, two war destroyers, destroyer, and two frigates). (The LDR could also use these ships.)
The WYNs gain a sprue of two of their Barracuda Frigates. They also get their Auxiliary Ship Collection in the 7000 Scale.

I was looking at the "7000 Scale Romulan Fleet Hawk Refit Core Coll. MGL" and it appears that there are two firehawks on the sprue instead of one firehawk and one sparrowhawk, at least compared to the non-refit version.

One should be a RoyalHawk with the extra plasma located at the top of the engine mount.

Correction to my statement as I was looking at the old school design, not the refit. It is missing the SpH...that is my blunder and will be fixed ASAP.
By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 - 05:56 pm: Edit |
You watch, those first-run double-Firehawk sprues are going to be worth a mint years from now. Better stash a few of those away now!
Antiques Roadshow: "Oh my, a 2020 Reversed Royalhawk Core Collection in Smoothest. Just amazing. I understand only two of these were made. Still in the original Shapeways bubblewrap, absolutely amazing."

The 7000 Hawk Refit Collection has been updated.

Well, I guess to continue some things, in the "7000 Scale Neo-Tholian Fleet Core Collection SRZ", the description of the collection says "One each of the original ships of the Neo-Tholian fleet (dreadnought, heavy cruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, frigate)", but there are six ships in the collection, not five. Just by looking at the ships I'm not sure what the sixth ship is.

The Neo-Tholian Core set has two NCL hulls.
The Neo-Tholian sets are configured to provide an efficient way to get the entire 312th on the map at the same time. There is a third collection coming that will fill in the holes left over after combining the Core and Builder collections.

Neo-Tholian Core set has had its text edited.

Now that I'm having time to look at it, I'm wondering why the "7000 Scale Federation Fleet Core Collection WEM" has four "window frame" type separators between ships, and two "ball on peg" type features on each end down the middle. Does it help with the printing? I only see it as adding footprint to the printing and making it more expensive than it needs to be, I notice the Federation Fleet Builder set has these as well.
I also notice the 7000 Lyran Fleet Core/Builder sets have what looks like some "scaffolding" on the sprue as well which I wonder if it is needed as well.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 - 11:33 am: Edit |
Those are ships particularly prone to breakage the way Shapeways packs them. We'd rather not waste plastic on the frames but if we do not you'll get broken ships and Shapeways won't replace them.
By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 - 07:56 pm: Edit |
Speaking of which, if anyone -does- get broken ships from these sets, -tell us- so that we can know what needs updating.
