She added the 3788 frax CCX, 3788 and 3125 Romulan Shrikes, the 7000 scale Fed-Klingon-Romulan tournament cruisers, and the ISC CCX.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, May 01, 2020 - 04:19 pm: Edit

A quick note regarding the ISC CCX mini; it has only one PPD mount on the central prong, rather than the two shown on the SSD in SFB Module X1. There is an ISC CAX in SFB Module X1R which has only one PPD, so the mini as shown does represent that hull as-is. That said, if it isn't worth the time and effort to offer separate minis for both the CCX and the CAX, well and good.

ADB Releases Ships for May, 2020

On May 1, 2020, ADB released a total of 41 new items to its shop on Shapeways with over 2,100 items available in total. Notably, we added more advanced technology ships (sometimes called X-technology or "X-ships") to the shop. There are some styles of ships designed to work within the price increase that Shapeways imposed. We also added more ships in the 7000 Scale that is designed to allow you to play with multiple ships on a "regular" map with 5/8-inch hexes. Please note that all ships are available in both 3788 and 3125 scales unless specifically noted, then they are only available in the scale noted.

The Federation starts with the Command War Destroyer, Flatbed Operational Carrier (noted as the CVO), and the War Destroyer Collection (two War Destroyers, a War Destroyer Scout, and a Command War Destroyer). These are available in both the Federation (gridded saucer) and Fed Classic (smooth saucer) styles. In the 7000 Scale the Battleship is available as a standalone. By customer request, we have sprued together three Heavy Cruisers.

The Klingons gain their B10B Battleship Kit which is a multi-piece kit. They also get their D5B War Cruiser Collection (two D5B War Cruisers, a D5S Scout Cruiser, and a D5L War Cruiser Leader). In the more aztecked style are the B10K Battleship Kit and the D5K War Cruiser Collection (two D5K Refitted War Cruisers, a D5SK Refitted Scout Cruiser, and a D5LK Refitted War Cruiser Leader). In response to customer requests, in the 7000 Scale, the Klingons gain a sprue of three D7 Battlecruisers.

The Romulans gain a Shrike Light Dreadnought (the Shrike+ was released earlier) and the SkyHawk Destroyer Collection (two SkyHawk-A Destroyers, a SkyHawk-F Scout, and a SkyHawk-L Destroyer Leader). In the 7000 Scale there are the Fleet Fast Ship Collection (a Shrike Light Dreadnought, two FastHawks, and two Fast SparrowHawk-A Light Cruisers) and the Fleet Tug Collection (two each of the SparrowHawk-T Transport with two pods, the SparrowHawk-H Cargo Transport, and the SparrowHawk-T Transport with one pod). These two collections are also available in the "+" or "Cranked Arrow" style.

In a new category, the 7000 Scale gets its first Tournament Collection with the ships that are used in Star Fleet Battles tournaments. This collection includes the Federation Heavy Cruiser, Klingon D7 Battlecruiser, and the Romulan KR Battlecruiser (this has the scallops on the wings to distinguish it from the Klingon D7).

The Gorns get their 7000 Scale Godzilla Battleship in both the regular and refitted versions.

The Tholians also get their X-Ship Destroyer.

The Orions get their X-Ship Heavy Cruiser.

The ISC gets its X-Ship X-Command Cruiser.

The Frax gets its X-Ship Command Cruiser in the 3788 Scale.

Nice job everybody!

The SL2400 ISC mini used a single greeble for double mounts. That was a "why change it now" decision.

We have changed the layout of the 7000 scale Klingon and Federation core and builder sets in order to save you money!

Thanks to Will for his hard work!

It makes a pretty significant difference in the price (some ended up a LOT less than the old price in Fine Detail), so if you have been on the fence before, it's worth taking a look.

By Greg Ernest (Gernest) on Wednesday, May 06, 2020 - 04:59 pm: Edit

Thank you for your work.

I would like to buy a small test sample, but with their postage price not scaling by the amount purchased it makes me stand off from buying just one set.

It's not under your control. I just want to see a couple to decide if I want to go in bigger.

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Wednesday, May 06, 2020 - 07:08 pm: Edit

If you are on Facebook, people post photos of the minis all the time in the SFU Miniatures Painting and Kitbashing Tips group.

I don't have any painted, but they look like this in the raw printed Fine Detail plastic (which is tricky to get good photos of, since it is translucent).

Any chance you can make the 7000-scale fleets available in the Gray PA12 material??

Garth L. Getgen

By Steven Zamboni (Szamboni) on Wednesday, May 06, 2020 - 10:53 pm: Edit

I'm waiting for a 7000 test print in PA12 to see how much detail survives the process. Hopefully the models won't need too much rework to look good in that material.

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Wednesday, May 06, 2020 - 11:20 pm: Edit

The models were specifically designed with Fine Detail plastic as the target. Some will meet the requirements for other materials, many won't as that wasn't the goal.

I can say that the Klingons only meet the requirements for Fine Detail (and only barely at that).

New printing technologies will continue to show up (much as HP MultiJet Fusion did) and eventually something that matches Fine Details finish and detail and is notably cheaper will take hold.

Shapeways previously offered a black hi-res plastic that was gorgeous and price-competitive with Fine Detail, but I think that was mainly offered to put price pressure on the supplier for Fine Detail's machines and materials. It went away at the same time as the problem-prone acrylics.

By Jean Sexton Beddow (Jsexton) on Thursday, May 07, 2020 - 10:35 am: Edit

Garth, where I could make it available in the Gray PA12, I did. It has a lower tolerance for thin walls than the Fine Detail Plastic.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, May 07, 2020 - 11:18 am: Edit

Lower tolerance? That's too bad. {sigh} I've just never been happy with the Fine Detail because it seems I always get a film on the lower half that just doesn't want to wash off completely.

Garth L. Getgen

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Thursday, May 07, 2020 - 01:38 pm: Edit

The "film" is a texture difference, where the dissolvable support material was attached to the print. That support material enables overhanging features of the model to be printed and is then washed away during post-processing. It inevitably leaves a texture change where it was in contact.

There is currently no liquid resin high-detail/high-quality 3D printing process that doesn't have some kind of support and some kind of aesthetic hit from the supports. There will always either be a texture difference from dissolvable supports, or the "goosebumps" from frangible latticework supports.

In the powdered plastic processes used for Versatile Plastic and MultiJet fusion, the bed of un-sintered powder provides the needed support and the grain in the surface of the model would not really be worse (or better) if there had been a temporary support attached.

ADB Releases Ships for June, 2020

On June 3, 2020, ADB released a total of 79 new items to its shop on Shapeways with 2,181 items available in total. Notably, we added more advanced technology ships (sometimes called X-technology or "X-ships") to the shop. There are some collections of ships designed to work within the price increase that Shapeways imposed. We also added more ships in the 7000 Scale that is designed to allow you to play with multiple ships on a "regular" map with 5/8-inch hexes. This month saw the introduction of Fleet Repair Docks (FRDs) to various empires' arsenal. Please note that all ships are available in both 3788 and 3125 scales unless specifically noted, and then they are only available in the scale noted.

The Federation starts with the Priority Transport with either no pods or the one pod it can carry. These are available in both the Federation (gridded saucer) and Fed Classic (smooth saucer) styles. In the 7000 Scale the Fleet Tug Collection is available (the Federation Fleet Tug and Light Tactical Transport, each with no pods and with one pod as well as a Fleet Tug with two pods, a standalone single pod, and a standalone double pod).

The Klingons gain their F5T Transport with either no pods or one pod. In the more aztecked style are the F5TK Transport with either one pod or no pods. In the 7000 Scale, the Klingons gain a Fleet Tug Collection (the Klingon T7 Fleet Tug and D5H Light Tactical Transport, each with no pods and with one pod as well as a Fleet Tug with two pods, and two standalone single pods).

The Kzinti gain their Needle Tender, so they now have their gunboat/PF Tender. They also get two X-ships: X-Ship Frigate and X-Ship Scout Drone Frigate.

The Orions get their Heavy Fleet Transport with various pod options available (Federation, Klingon, or Lyran, each as a separate miniature). They also get their Heavy Battle Raider, their Salvage Strike Cruiser, and their OK6 Cruiser built in part from a captured Klingon D6. In the 7000 Scale they get their Pirate Command Collection (Dreadnought, Heavy Cruiser, Heavy War Destroyer, Salvage Cruiser, Battlecruiser, and Salvage Strike Cruiser), Pirate Mercenary Collection (Light Raider Frigate, war destroyer, Raider Cruiser, Battle Raider, Heavy Battle Raider, and a heavy cruiser), and Pirate Raider Collection (a Cruiser Raider, Light Raider, Battle Raider, Medium Raider, Double Light Raider, and a Slaver).

In the 7000 Scale, the Tholians get their Fleet Tug Collection (heavy cruiser tugs, a war cruiser light tactical transport, a cargo corvette, and a web tender).

The Hydrans gain their Escort Hunter, Heavy Mauler Cruiser, and Medium Mauler Cruiser. They also get their Fleet Repair Dock.

The Lyrans and their wayward county of the Lyran Democratic Republic gain several variations of the King Jaguar New Heavy Cruiser. There is the New Fast Cruiser, New Gunboat Cruiser, and New Division Control Ship. Note that LDR ships are only in the 3125 Scale. The Lyrans also get the same ships in a "refitted" version with aztecking in the 3788 Scale.

If you use more generic ships, be sure to check out the "General" section. We have released a Fleet Repair Dock in 3788, 3125, and 7000 scales. In the 7000 Scale, there is a Fleet Convoy Collection [three standard Small Freighters (Class-I or one-pod), a Large Freighter (Class-II or two-pod), a Jumbo Freighter (Class-III or three-pod), and a Heavy Freighter (Class-IV or four-pod)].

Continuing to build the new Tournament Ships category, the 7000 Scale gets its two more Tournament Collections with the ships that are used in Star Fleet Battles tournaments. The second collection contains the Lyran White Tiger Tournament Command Cruiser, the LDR Red Jaguar Tournament War Cruiser, the Orion Tournament Battle Raider, the WYN Tournament Great Black Shark Cruiser, and the Hydran Tournament Lord Marshal Command Cruiser. The third collection contains the Gorn Tournament Command Cruiser, Kzinti Tournament Command Cruiser, ISC Tournament Cruiser, WYN Auxiliary Battlecruiser, Archeo-Tholian (Tholian) Tournament Cruiser, Neo-Tholian Tournament Cruiser, and Andromedan Krait.

The Omega Octant sees the Drex gain their Battlecarrier and Omni Scale X7 Light Fighters. The Maesrons get their Battleship. The Ymatrians gain some sprued squadrons: the Destroyer Squadron which contains two Cutlass destroyers and a Rapier Destroyer Leader and the Frigate Squadron which contains two Dagger Frigates and a Poniard Frigate Leader.

It looks like we will be releasing ships on July 6. That way, you can enjoy the 4th with your family and friends and see new ships on Monday.

Happy coincidence: The indentations in the bases of the 7k built-in stands are just deep enough to take a 1/10"x1/16" mini-magnet. Just enough to give a bit of grip, not strong enough that it threatens to break the model when you try to pull it off of something.

By Jair Bobys (Jairb) on Friday, July 03, 2020 - 02:43 am: Edit

I just bought my first batch of 7000 series Fed and Klingon Core and Builder sets. The plan is to use them for ACTA SF.

With that in mind, what are the chances of getting an expansion set for each Empire that only contains War Cruiser hulls? It seems like, with all the variants in Book 2, they'd be very much in demand for fleet builds.

Thanks for the excellent work on these deigns!

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, July 03, 2020 - 06:11 pm: Edit

Jair: You asked what would be the chances of getting a sprue of war cruisers for each empire.

We already have the "builder" collections which have (mostly) war cruisers and war destroyers (which provide most of the variants).

We are reluctant to add more collection such as 3 or 6 war cruisers because the cost of doing so is not zero (the sculptor spends a couple of hours setting it up, and it costs the profit on three or four sales to pay Jean to upload it). To consider a "customer request" we would need to see several customers request it, not just one. We would lose a lot of money if we did a set for each empire, you were the only one who bought them, and you only bought a single copy of the three or four empires you like.

Sometimes you may have to buy "the closest thing to what you want" because nobody else wants to help pay for "exactly what YOU want."

That said, I could ask our fastest sculptor to do one sprue of 3 war cruisers for 1 August and see if they sell. If we sold a dozen of them, then we would have sculptors do more such 3xCW sprues.

All of that aside, I really think once you see how the universe works you're going to find that the builder collections do what you don't yet know you really want.

By Jair Bobys (Jairb) on Sunday, July 05, 2020 - 06:56 pm: Edit

I appreciate your consideration.

With no view into sales numbers I'm clearly in no position to judge the viability.

Maybe if the 7000 line Fleet sets sell well enough a sprue of 3 containing (NCA, 2xNCL) / (D5W, 2x D5K) or equivalent will be viable. In the interim I'm certainly happy to proxy or build to what I have.

The minis look great!
