Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Shapeways Project: Shapeways Store: Archive through November 29, 2021

I miss remembered the designation, should be the NAX, from the X ships reinforcements. My mistake was that the non X ship is a NCL, and I miss typed it too. And almost did it again...

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Thursday, August 19, 2021 - 11:33 pm: Edit

Ah. I don't think X1R ships are in the MSSB and almost certainly not in G3 (pre-dates it).

Conversions of GW-era ships will probably not come until the actual x-ship hulls are finished, since there's lots of discussion about what would/would-not be done to conversions.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, August 20, 2021 - 10:38 pm: Edit

For what it's worth, my PDF copy of Module G3 (from Warehouse 23) has the Module X1R ships in it, as does my print copy of the Federation Master Starship Book.

That said, the Fed NAX is an X-incarnation of the Fed NCA, rather than the NCL.

Speaking of first-generation X-ships: are the Federation GSX and/or the Fed HDWX on the same "to-do" list as the Fed DDX and FFX? (Well, I suppose both the NAX and HDWX would need the FFX to be done first, so they could steal one or more of its warp engines...)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, August 21, 2021 - 12:29 am: Edit

There is a distinction between "partial X refits" which will probably never go to shapeways and "actual X-ships that just happened to get printed in X1R" that will get into Shapeways sooner or later.

Does anyone know for sure if shapeways is doing another black friday/cyber monday discount this year?

By Jean Sexton Beddow (Jsexton) on Saturday, November 20, 2021 - 01:53 pm: Edit

John, we have heard nothing. I suspect they may not, but if I were shopping, I might well wait until November 29 in case they spring it out.

By Steve Stewart (Stevestewart) on Sunday, November 21, 2021 - 01:15 pm: Edit

Having moved towards completing my Federation and Romulan squadrons, I popped onto Shapeways to look at the 7000 series Kzinti Core and Orion Mercenary packages. I thought they were a little pricey (£25 - £30 each) and then I put them in the basket to checkout. Price was around £75 by the time I'd added VAT and normal shipping (plus the possibility of additional duty as they product comes from the Netherlands). Are Shapeways the only venue that ADB would consider using for the excellent minis produced? I think that might price me out of the UK market. Of course , it's always possible that's going to be the going rate everywhere. Perhaps Black Friday will be kind to me....

By Jean Sexton Beddow (Jsexton) on Sunday, November 21, 2021 - 03:11 pm: Edit

The Kzinti Core collection is pricey. In part it's because those ships are both long and tall. A more affordable material is the multi-fusion jet fusion plastic.

The Orions are pushing the limits on the "thinness" of their ships, so the sculptor provided a "cage" to protect them. This prevents it from arriving broken in the mail.

Shapeways is the only site that provides the printing and a "free" online store.

I was looking at the shipways link Jean provided. Are there were more miniatures than SSDs, especially for Omega?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 - 07:22 pm: Edit

A number of the Omega Octant minis on Shapeways represent ships which are not in any of the five published Omega modules for Star Fleet Battles, but which are in various issues of Captain's Log.

For example, the playtest rules and SSDs for the Zosman Marauder ships are in Captain's Log #50 and in Captain's Log #52.

Plus, while the Paravian starship miniatures on Shapeways are based on their respective "lost empire" SSDs in SFB Module C6, four of these classes can also be used to represent the playtest antiproton variant Omega-Paravian SSDs provided in Captain's Log #54.

Further, there are a number of Alpha Octant miniatures which could be used as stand-ins for their closest counterparts in the Federal Republic of Aurora - to include the five "new arrival" SSDs featured in Captain's Log #53.

Someone asked the other day if we could find another company that does what Shapeways does that might provide better prices at least for Europe.

I had a long talk with Jean about this after she did exhaustive research.

The answer is no such source can be found.

None offer any better pricing that Shapeways; if they did, Shapeways would have already been forced to drop prices to match. None offer a storefront that works as well as Shapeways.

It's not a matter that an alternative store would require us to pay extra or something; it's that there isn't a store that would give anyone (US or Euro) a better price structure. Plus, running two stores or switching stores would cost Jean 200 hours of extra work that would have to be paid for in higher prices.

Someone asked Jean if we could use Etsy. We could, but it would result in higher costs and slower service, not better. We'd have to order the ship from Shapeways, wait for it to come in, pay someone to inspect it (adding that to the price), deal with the ships that weren't any good and the chaos that causes with your order, then charge shipping and some profit, meaning you would pay 25% more and wait twice as long or longer. Plus we'd have to pay Jean to load stuff there and manage a store there. In theory we might open a store on Etsy with maybe three ships (guess which ones) and include an advertisement for our store on Shapeways with each shipment.

We make fairly little on each ship in Shapeways; most of what you pay goes to somebody who isn't ADB (Shapeways, sculptor, overhead). We can do that only because we don't have the warehouse handling of the ships like we do the metal ones. If we sold Shapeways ships by mail out of our office we'd be charging at least 50% more per ship.

Shapeways is doing Cyber Monday. 10% off with the code CYBER2021

Enjoy!

And to confuse matters, Shapeways is a Dutch company with a printer farm in Eindhoven. Whatever issues they're having shipping to Europe, they're self-inflicted.

By Mike Dowd (Mike_Dowd) on Sunday, November 28, 2021 - 02:00 pm: Edit

To Europe, yes, self-inflicted.

To the UK, no: Brexit-inflicted.

For the Brits who place their orders, yeah, it would be self-inflicted.

By Steve Stewart (Stevestewart) on Monday, November 29, 2021 - 08:05 am: Edit

Steve / Jean - thanks for looking into my question. I appreciate the effort.

Mike - not entirely sure what your last point was, but I suspect if we explore it any further the 'gators might be snapping at us!
