SHAPEWAYS HAS FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY AND CEASED OPERATIONS.
This is a complicated situation and we do not have much information other than a few press releases and website articles which don't seem to be complete data. It is unclear if ADB Inc. will ever get paid the last batch of royalties or if customers who ordered from them recently will ever get their ships. I am betting "no" on both counts but that is a guess.
There are lots of kinds of bankruptcies and this is the kind where all employees were terminated, all executives resigned, they turned out the lights and locked the doors. The bankruptcy court will appoint someone to sort out the mess. Someone might buy the assets and Shapeways would disappear, or might buy the entire company and things could get back on track.
It appears that they borrowed $669,000 somewhere and it was due Friday and they filed bankruptcy on Tuesday, presumably because they couldn't pay it. That would seem to mean that they were not making enough profit on sales but that is only a guess.

If you ordered from Shapeways and didn't get it, you might see if your bank can reverse the credit card charge. They might or might not be able to. Being a bankruptcy, such things might be locked out.

I stopped buying from them as their prices (especially delivery) went through the roof. Which is a shame because I love the 7000-series minis!

Considering how much people were complaining about how high their prices were, and yet they still couldn't pay their bills, I wonder if this is a viable business for anyone. Or were they just uniquely mismanaged?

It was a lot of things, Mike. They invested an absurd amount of money in an extensive array of different material capabilities on the theory that the commercial 3D printing market was going to grow exponentially, which it did not. They also had their main print farm in the U.S. located in Queens in NYC, which is one of the most expensive locations to operate anything. They had a habit of latching onto the New Shiny Thing (TM), which resulted in constantly switching up the materials available and rejiggering of prices, which was a big turn off for business customers trying to maintain storefronts there. And their storefronts were less than intuitive, with a search feature that didn't really allow one to search just within a given store... which turned off both business customers and the end-user customers. From what I gather, there was a fair lot of general mismanagement on the back end as well, in addition to all of this.

My sense is they priced well below cost to drive volume, hoping they could either reduce costs over time and/or raise prices to break even. And it turns out they couldn't do that.

I'd wager that some subgroup of former employees will reform the business somehow. If the lenders just let it totally fail and liquidate any remaining equipment and supplies they'll take a huge bath.

We are looking into options. Adding and managing a print farm is a bit more than we can swing in our current building. In all truth, we don't really have the storage capacity to order minis (especially the more esoteric ones) and hope someone buys one. We had nearly 3000 minis on Shapeways! Whatever business we choose, we will be taking the time to evaluate the quality of the prints, the turnaround time, and their shipping quality. It will be a slow ramp-up, just as it was with Shapeways way back when. So do give us time to make sure you get a quality product.

And I do want to apologize for being so slow to get this going. We've been dealing with my cataract surgery (no fun when your eyeballs don't work properly) and my husband's hip replacement surgery. The latter means I am out a lot, getting him to doctors' appointments and physical therapy. 🙂 And, of course, this month I have the monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual royalties to compile and pay.

They supposedly turned down an offer to buy the company for $5 million.

We have been approached by companies wanting to go into or expand 3d printing service bureau stuff and are in discussions. So are about 30 other game publishers.

As of right now, unfortunately they don't have a marketplace. So it would be for designers to upload their own stuff and order it for themselves. It does sound like they will be working toward a marketplace, but maybe not anytime soon. Also, none of the accounts were retained so everything would have to be uploaded again.
