Alan is funny

By Alan De Salvio (Alandwork) on Thursday, February 16, 2023 - 07:24 pm: Edit

On his page Lar has some alluring tease videos showing the latest Vudar counters; if you buy the premium subscription, you will have access to live action videos of Lar ACTUALLY MODIFYING THE GAMEBOX. That's right, without any censoring at all!

For his most, shall we say enthusiastic fans, Lar's wishlist includes:
Wireless mouse
Bluetooth headset
Two level gaming table
Quantum chip computing laptop
First Edition Federation Space
One pallet of mixed F&E countersheets (enough for five turns of the General War)

Like I said Alan is funny :)

On a related side note, has ADB thought of parterning with a company like Matrix games. They have a ton of experience taking complicated tabletop board games and turning them into pretty good computer versions, or even building something from scratch.

We have talked with several companies over 30 years. None of them followed through.

By David Finan (Bbanzai) on Monday, February 20, 2023 - 08:36 pm: Edit

Wow I am surpised seems like the potential is there.

So, a question for those folks who play F&E using CB. CB does not appear to have a back-and-forth live counter movement option, so I understand players may use other means such as email or chat via Discord or something. What does that look like exactly? Let's imagine a contrived example and say the players open an email/chat thread:

Msg from Player A> OP movement begins, CT7, K Red Fleet 1xC8,2xD7C,2xD7,3xD6,9xD5,3xF5,1xD6M,3xD6D moves pulse #1 from 1813 to 1913. Do you react?

Msg from Player B> No reaction

Msg from Player A> K Red Fleet continues movement to 2012 using pulse #2. Do you react?

Msg from Player B> No reaction

Msg from Player A> K Red Fleet leaves 1xD6, 1xD6D, 3xD5 behind in 2012 and continues moving using pulse #3 to 2212. Do you react?

Msg from Player B> Fed CC, CL, 4xFF react from 2211 to 2112.

Msg from Player A> K Red Fleet leaves 1xD7C,1xD6D,1xD5,3xF5 behind to pin in 2112 and continues movement to 2211 using pulse #4. Do you react?

Msg from Player B> No reaction.

Msg from Player A> K Red Fleet ends movement at 2211. Do you react?

Or is it somehow completely different?

I play by email using Vassal - I don't use the live movement option at all. A typical move looks like this:

> From 3611, 2ncl move SW 2NW to 3311.
> From 3703, 2FF move 4SW 2S to 3307.
> From 3005, NCL ff move 2NW to 2804.
> From 4206, 2FF move 2SW S SW S to 3910.
>
> You've got a bunch of possible reactions there.

And the response:

> 3210 K4 reacts into 3311
> 3207 SNB reacts into 3307
>
> No other reactions

If there is a more important move where I think my opponent might react and it'll change my future moves, I'll end on that. Sometimes it goes pulse-by-pulse, but that is actually rather uncommon. I often do a bunch of moves in one theatre which either can't be reacted to or is almost certainly not going to be reacted to (say, fighters off a doomed BATS), and then end on one or two moves that might be.

There is a certain amount of sportsmanship expected here, but essentially it's the same way I've played over the board: instead of "1405? 1404? 1403? 1402? 1401." it's "My fleet moves to 1401. Are you reacting anywhere?" There's also the understanding that doing a surprising reaction to a move early in the sequence may cause the other player to reassess; by sending a bunch of moves you do tip your hand a little.

It can be done in a number of ways.

For example: Microsoft Teams offers a Team Meeting option that works great. It allows:
A screen share capability for visualizing the map**.
You can place game play aids, econ forms, etc into the files section for easy reference.
It does come equipped with voice (if you have a mic), camera (if you have one and want it on).
There are options for breakout rooms (if you want to have a strategy discussion.

Currently when I play via CB we just have two maps open at the same time and use voice (call or discord works fine)...we choose in advance who is recording (saving) the move file (usually the phasing player's responsibility). We use PBEM Die Roller for dice rolls. Using Vassal we use the Vassal die roller/Discord for chat/and the map works well enough when everyone is logged in. (YMMV depending on your local internet connectivity)

**The one drawback with the Teams option above is everyone in the game is at the mercy of the person sharing for the visual (you only see their screen) even if you have a file multiple people can work in.

I found Slack pretty good -and William and I used it as a Chat System - plus you can send files and use the inbuilt dice roller.

It had two ways of hiding data for battles - a side chat in effect and having to click the 'comment' to reveal the message.

Either way it worked well I think.

Turtle I meant to ask you yesterday how the recounting is going.

By Warren Mathews (Turtle) on Monday, May 27, 2024 - 11:54 am: Edit

Due to F&E Countersheets needing to be reprinted, the staff is doing a deep dive into the counters currently on those sheets. This is resulting in a delay in the completion of the latest F&E gamebox. We apologize for the inconvenience.

By Lawrence Bergen (Lar) on Monday, May 27, 2024 - 07:22 pm: Edit

We are calling this version of the cyberbox the B-10 version right? With all the delays and cost over runs? :)

The Boeing Starliner version

By William Jockusch (Verybadcat) on Saturday, August 31, 2024 - 09:24 am: Edit

Per general discussions, the E3 counter in my version of the CB game is wrong. It should have a crippled strength of 1-2. In my game, it shows as 1.

By Lawrence Bergen (Lar) on Sunday, September 01, 2024 - 02:04 pm: Edit

Yeah that version was created from the original playtest SITs which were supposed to be 50% of the AF rounded down.
When they were rounded up they became way to good of a deal so had to be nerfed with rules (making them vanish or cost money; and unable to build more).

It is my opinion had they been held to that original DF rounded down the cost of repair and the ease of destruction would have caused them to go away naturally as players wouldn’t want them.

The way they are now they repair so cheap at 0.5 EPs it’s worth having them around to eat up some damage in he early attacks Where you can dictate the battle terms (say against border battle stations)

By William Jockusch (Verybadcat) on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 - 06:38 pm: Edit

Sure, it makes them better. I wish they had left the Fed ECL with 4 crippled def because breaking the pattern was interesting.

Anyway, hopefully it gets fixed in some version of the CB game.

Lar may be working on Andro stuff - if this is the case he gets a pass.

By Lawrence Bergen (Lar) on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 - 12:24 am: Edit

Andro stuff was already in the box because of the playtest. It WILL change factors when ADB develops a new Andro program.

What I am working on now (is not Andro related) and will be through November (when I am not working on Civil Wars and prepping a file for the Basic Set update) is the revisions based on the new counters released in 2021 with both TacOps product, the counters in 2021) and the upcoming rules for Civil Wars, and the additional counters added or adjusted with the upcoming restock (and increased counters provided with 280 FO/AO/CO Sheets).

Good news after a couple of years of a broken design engine (the one that allows edits) I finally found the solution. My tool pallettes have been restored and updates that were painfully slow can be done quicker.

Good news!

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Thursday, April 24, 2025 - 11:25 am: Edit

Yay! Been waiting with baited breath for new Cyberboard game file.

By Lawrence Bergen (Lar) on Friday, April 25, 2025 - 08:56 pm: Edit

I know I am way behind. I was clipping along at a 3.5 year avg for updates.

Thankfully turtle and i have mostly kept our progress spreadsheet up to date. Just need to recheck the new stuff and recount to make sure we can fit it all in.

Also more good news is i tested this file on the version 4 of cyberboard and it will work. (They only have a debugged test version so grain of salt applies)

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Monday, April 28, 2025 - 12:08 pm: Edit

Kewl. I don't know what the new game file looks like - but on the old one there's still plenty of unit you can take out (e.g., you really don't need that many Klingon D6's).
