This is an idea I thought might be of use once more first-generation X-ships were published in a future F&E module (such as the proposed Tactical Operations), but is intended more to show what might happen in the aftermath of a decisive Coalition victory in the early-to-mid General War.
(I might have been better off posting this over in the scenario proposals forum, so my apologies for that...)
The main concept behind this proposal was to take the kind of "post-war" setup seen in alternate historical works like The Man in the High Castle, and to overlap them onto the F&E map.
This scenario would assume that, about five to ten years prior to its onset, the Klingons and Romulans would have succeeded in conquering the "on-map" Federation, dividing the UFP into two opposing territories (or perhaps even into puppet governments, of the kind proposed elsewhere on the BBS).
A new line of Neutral Zone hexes would run along the 29** hex column, except in Orion space (as the Enclave would remain as a buffer of sorts between the expanded Klingon and Romulan empires) and hex 2908 (which would be divided up based on which Coalition power holds which star system: the Klingons would get Sol, the Romulans would insist on holding 40 Eridani A, an so on.) The "spare" hexes on either side of this new NZ line would be consolidated into new provinces: for example, a new Klingon-held province could be made out of hexes 2813 to 2816. Of course, a chain of new battle stations would be placed on either side, with new starbases established to act as major nodes for the new border fleets.
In this setup, the assumption is that the wartime co-operation between the Coalition members would begin to strain during the post-war years, as more hawkish elements on both Klinshai and Romulus would look towards their next avenues of conquest. Perhaps this would cause the Romulans to gradually phase out their range of Kestrels (so as to avoid supply issues in case of a war with the Klingons), or perhaps the continued shipments of KR spare parts might be seen as efforts made by the "Coalitionist" forces on either side of the new border.
Would things break down entirely and lead to a full-scale Klingo-Romulan conflict? If the occupied halves of the UFP were run as puppet state rather than being formally integrated into Klingon and Romulan space respectively, might a more limited conflict be waged across the occupied zones? Would a Federation resurgence launched from the Survey Area force the Coalition to co-operate once more? Or might the onset of an ISC or Andromedan intervention cause things to bee more drastically interrupted?
While the main focus of this idea was on (former) Fed space, one could expand things to other areas of the Alpha Octant - to include asking what, if any, role the Lyrans might have in the event of a Klingo-Romulan schism.
But even leaving that aside, might the prospect of an intra-Coalition conflict make things interesting from a Federation and Empire perspective?
