Im hoping to finally dust off and learn F&E... If someone wouldn't mind a learning game with me via Vassal let me know. I've read through the base rulebook.

BIG NEWS!!

I finally have a way to get the stack viewer to show SE correctly. Going to require a bunch of double-checking and updates to files, but I definitely need to polish off the current module update.

See here:

Awesome

This does lead to a new question:

Now that the module can calculate SE correctly, it would be possible (I think...) to add in fighter SE automatically.

The potential problem is that it will always give the full amount, unless you (yes, you) go in and adjust the fighter property for the current stocks. Now, for most situations, this is fine. Automatic resupply will solve it, and being trapped out of supply is when it's worth fiddling with properties. It would mostly become a nuisance to check SEs during a retreat.

So, I'm leaning towards doing it, but want to see what others think first.

I like your idea.

Not sure if this is where to put this, but I seem to have run across a major system conflict of some sort. Running Mac OS 14.7.6 and the most current version of Vassal. The F&E 2.1 module is generating massive graphics bugs. Example: selecting fleet dropdown menus produces blank menus. Mousing down the menu lets you select a fleet, but the resulting window is just a grey empty field. Resizing the top band with text and server connect status causes the entire Vassal window to go blank grey. The graphics glitches are also carrying over into other windows. (e.g., Acrobat Reader starts having graphics distortions when the Vassal window freaks out. Reinstalled the module and Vassal with the same result.

Going back to version 2.0 of the module (which I've played a lot) and I now have similar, although less severe issues. Apparently, something somewhere in a Mac OS update broke something in the module's graphics setup. (Checked Vassal modules for 4 other games and none have similar problems.)

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

I believe Losberg not only works for apple but he uses a mac to play in our current game. Try him Jason

James Yes please have it figure out the fighter groups at max compliment. Players can work backwards if we need to. Thanks so much.

Also there are a few other ideas up the chain if your working on a v2.2 :)

I figured it out. I actually had to upgrade to OS 15. First time I've ever seen _NOT_ upgrading an operating system cause something that was working to break...

Question: I have F&E Vassal module 2.1 and VASSAL 3.7.5

It tells me there is a VASSAL update available. If I update, will it mess up my F&E module or game saves? Or no effect?

2nd question: Is there a newer F&E module after 2.1? And if I update, will it mess up my game saves?

Lastly, for those working on future updates, I was looking at the list of Lyran scouts, and I found the CLS... and also the CLS. There are two of them in the available ships file. Was that 2nd one supposed to be something else?

Updating Vassal will not be a problem. It is possible that they'll introduce a bug (I recently ran into one that hit another module I was using), but the F&E module is simple enough in most respects that it's unlikely.

Right now, version 2.1 is the latest. I need to finish QA on a couple new save game files, and then... go to every previous one, do a counter update, and re-save them. *sigh* Once I get through that there will be a 2.2.

If you use (the eventual) 2.2 with an earlier game (i.e., what you're playing right now), there will be small problems that can be fixed by using the counter update item in Vassal.

When you start the module, it should list all the extensions you're using. (Right after "- Federation & Empire version 2.1".) List what you have there; probably I left it in an extension by mistake, and need to take it out.

I downloaded Vassal 3.7.18 from the Vassal Engine website and when I go to install it there is a warning that it is unpublished. Is it safe to install?

The issue is detected by Microsoft Defender.

The F&E Module 2.1 has a similar warning about a security risk.

I have Vassal and the F&E module on my old laptop but havent played in many years.
Cheers.

Happens all the time with Microsoft and Vassal. I'd ignore it.

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Saturday, November 01, 2025 - 10:50 pm: Edit

I figured, but always safe to check whether it is something which is always there and something people ignore, or if it used to be safe and something happened and its now unsafe.

Cheers.
