Well, dice continue to be pretty evil to the Romulans
`
Cloaks Retreat 1 of 3 successful
Offensive Cloaks 1 Successful, 1 Failed and 2 N/A
Like the last game - timing is again hurting the Romulans - the Failed one had 80+ Federation compot(and roll was 5 v 1 on the combat dice) and the successful one had 40 Federation compot!
(Gorn Marine Assaults as a comparison is 1 of 2 successful!)
Overall - Offensive use of Cloaks has been a nightmare - with average rolls, it should be 14 successes and 4 failures..... its 9 v 6.
The dice gods really do need to play fair.
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 - 07:28 am: Edit |
Well, you lose some and you lose some.
Dice gods really don't like me.
I have over a 300% failure rate on Offensive use of Cloaks this turn (and just over expected on success) - 2 v 2 (you should be getting over 3 x as many success's as failures).
Average combat dice have also widened - 3.46 v 3.82 (over 28 rounds).
When will I get some good dice and William poor dice?

Heavy fighting on the Fed+Gorn vs. Romulan front has led to significant crips for both sides. A quick count found 24 Romulans and 31 Alliance. Alliance have destroyed 3 Romulan BATS and a convoy and kicked the Romulans off of 3 captured minor planets.
Destroyed ships are 5 Romulans vs. 4 Alliance, with the largest a Gorn BC, but the next Romulan FH and 2SPF.
One battle left to go on that front, plus a Hydran battle.

Well, some of the dice gods decided to favour the Coalition towards the end and on combat dice, we ended the turn at 3.71 each.
In three areas individual dice are hurting the Coalition though
Persuit Battles - I just can't get enough on the dice to kill 1 ship and cripple another ship - whereas William does (average in pursuit is probably 2 v 5!!!)
Captures - Alliance continues to roll above average and the Coalition doesn't.
I think the Alliance have captured 6 ships in a row without response?
(I think turn 9 was the last Coalition Capture - and a CU at that!!)
Offensive Cloaks -
Average rolls would have got 16 successes and only 11 have been had and 5 failures and I have had 7.
Romulans have at least caused some problems to the Federation on Retrograding - 3 Federation Fleets which Counter attacked around 3611 are unable to get back to Sol or 3008...
…. and 2915 nearly had no main fleet capable of retrograding to it.... but William noticed the trap.

Alliance turn 12 is done. The final battle was a Hydran map-reentry battle. The Hydrans needed to either fight a single round and retreat, or to "go for it" and get into a big battle with lots of crips for everyone. In the latter case, they would have needed to win the battle. The first round roll wasn't great, and the fact that the Hydrans still have .a crip backlog, including some hybrid carriers, wasn't great either. I ended up deciding the moment wasn't right.
The Kzinti have .a big reserve at Earth and a small one in the Barony. One Fed reserve is also at Earth, and the other three are at locations where they might be pinned, but doing so would involve bringing a lot of Coalition ships, and even then they would be subject to unpinnin, including by the reserves at Earth.
One Gorn reserve is deployed n their BATS at the Romulan/Fed/Gorn corner. A stronger reserve is further back and threatens to unpin the forward one.
The forward reserves allow me to get away with fewer ships at the forward SB. For example, the Fed 6th is defended by less than a full battle line, but also by 3 reserves., including the nasty Gorn forward reserve In each case, it would take a lot of ships to pin the reserve, and even then it might be unpinned.

I inventoried the fleets as of the end of A12, ignoring all mothballs. These numbers are not comparable to the previous ones, as they are from the end of a turn, rather than after builds.
uncrippled | crippled | Total | |
R | 157 | 45 | 202 |
K | 207 | 157 | 364 |
L | 103 | 67 | 170 |

How comes I never find I have enough ships?
(And the answer probably is due to the number of cripples!)

I have been forgetting about that "enemy took the province then withdrew" rule all game. That said, It couldn't have given me many extra EP, if any, because Paul withdraws from my provinces approximately never.

Correction on Klingons
Income 133 Eps (-5 for Major*, -2 for Minor)
I only recaptured 1611 on Coalition turn 12 so it will not produce any Eps on tile turn 14.
Klingon Balance is 1.1 Ep's.
Province Withdrawal - first time I think it has happened in the game - evey other time I think retreat happened after the BATS died (or I stayed in the province to capture it) - it didn't help that I didn't have any Romulans in the province.

Paul are we missing each other in Slack somehow? Alternatively, if you aren't ready to start moves, that's fine . . .
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Sunday, November 24, 2019 - 09:30 am: Edit |
Hi William
Sorry - been a busy weekend - will be back later for the first C13 moves though.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Sunday, November 24, 2019 - 07:37 pm: Edit |
Op move is about to start. Paul has now decided that the Klingons need to replace a battle pod. (We are very loose on sequence of play, and as he hasn't made any actual moves, I'm fine with that.) To me, it screams out "raid on Earth!" Stay tuned.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 - 11:16 pm: Edit |
Op moves are well underway. Thinking the Romulans were going to help with an attack on Earth, the Gorns reacted aggressively off of their (nameless?) SB in 4806 against a BATS assault in 4808. After that, a bunch of Romulans in Fed space moved against the Gorns! This would be a necessary prelude to an assault on SB 4808, which may now be coming. But that would also limit the Romulan contribution against the Feds, as they only have so many ships.
Stay tuned.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Friday, November 29, 2019 - 10:43 pm: Edit |
To the extent that a Gorn goal was to provoke attacks on themselves, we have an unqualified success. Six BATS and both forward Gorn SB are under attack. The BATS are all more than adequately defended. The SB are both questionably defended. Sufficiently for the moment, but there are a few Romulans left to move.
The Fed 8th and 9th SB are also under attack. The defenses at the 8th are adequate for now.
No move towards Earth, yet.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Saturday, November 30, 2019 - 04:32 pm: Edit |
The latest Romulan moves are taking fleets within range of Earth . . . and moving them to pin a reserve at Sigma Draconis in the East-central Federation. I think we can now make it official . . . they are not coming for Earth.
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 02:34 am: Edit |
If Windows hadn't so generously restarted on me (losing most of a move file), Op moves would have been completed.
7 SB's are under attack but no capitals (so far) are - with a small amount of Coalition hulls still to move, I doubt I will get into Sol this turn.
I did make one slight error - I thought a fleet at 1509 was just cripples, when in fact it had a dozen or so ships in it!
Only 1 place they can really reach (along with 1506), so no real loss.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 05:21 am: Edit |
You can hit control-S in CB to save your moves, even if they aren't complete. The next time you open the game file, the moves will still be there.
But it's hard to get used to doing it. So many programs have autosave nowadays, but this one doesn't.
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 05:27 am: Edit |
The problem has been that Windows occasionally physically does a hard re-start (after closing down all programs) to do an update... it doesn't happen very often - but can be annoying if I don't notice it is due to do it
All good though - should finish it at lunchtime.
By Richard B. Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 09:16 am: Edit |
Try changing your update settings if that is a problem...
By Jon Murdock (Xenocide) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 11:49 am: Edit |
Yeah, it usually gives warnings but the warnings are often hours before the hard shut off. You can turn them off. I leave the reminders on but do not allow it to shut off on its own.
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 04:42 pm: Edit |
Coalition Turn 13 movement has ended.
In retaliation for the unprovoked Gorn attack on the Romulans, the Romulans have directed the bulk of their forces into Gorn space.
Federation SB 2915 is also under attack by the first joint Romulan and Klingon operation of the war.
Due to the swing of Romulan forces to the North East, the planned attack on the Sol system was delayed - but several other planets and SB's are under attack.
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Tuesday, December 03, 2019 - 09:25 pm: Edit |
Reserves have been dispatched. There are seven starbase battles with a wide range of different probabilities that the SB will be destroyed.
The Feds will lose minor planet 2106 (near the Klingon and Kzinti borders).
The Gorns are likely to pull through in pretty good shape.
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Wednesday, December 04, 2019 - 09:11 am: Edit |
Combat has started.
On the Hydran Front the Lyrans traded a CW for a HR... (and then I ran away!).
On the Federation front - a Lyran BC sneaked up and mugged a Federation NCL which had been pinned by an E4.
Just got enough for 3 Casualties to kill the NCL.
The First SB assault battles are next....
By William Jockusch (Verybadcat2) on Saturday, December 07, 2019 - 08:02 am: Edit |
At a Gorn SB, the Romulans fought a round then ran.
The Fed 9th fleet SB was defended by a small Kzinti fleet plus some crips. There the Coalition fried an unescorted CVE that was on the line. Then they fried the Kzinti mauler. My mistake -- it should have been in form. On the plus side, that left them without enough to kill the SB. The mauler killed a Lyran BC with its last gasp.
