AT34

Jason is back in action, and we are wrapping up the last few fights. The last significant fight is over Romulan SB 3711 (over a planet with 2PDU on it).

Both sides have about 130 SEQ; the Feds have a lot of X ships, the Romulans have zero X ships, but over the SB, for the first round, the Fed compot was 165/5 nd the Romulan compot was 226/6 (although down 3EW from X ships, so the Romulans have a -1 shift). Both sides roll badly (1 for the Feds and 2 for the Roms), so not insignificant damage is done, but the Feds won't be directing the SB this round.

We'll see if the Feds want to try to kill the SB with SIDs or not.

AT34

Combat is over! And as such, the game is mostly over! We don't need to retrograde or strat move, so after this, it is mostly just accounting.

In Fed space, the last gasp of a Fed offensive fizzled over Romulan SB/captured planet 3711; the Feds went in with a big battle line, giving it two tries to roll up and direct the SB in one shot, but failed (he needed the BIR to roll up and then to roll high. It was very unlikely, but not impossible). After two failed tries and loss of a lot of fighters and some small escorts on SCS groups, he called it off and left. Overall in Fed space, the Feds recaptured most of Fed space; the only planet still held by the Coalition is 3711 and the only province still controlled by the Coalition is 2815. They also struck into Coalition borders, killing a Klingon BATS and devastating a Klingon minor planet.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti reclaimed all their space and original planets. They also captured numerous Lyran and Klingon provinces, killed a Lyran BATS and captured a Lyran minor planet (0607).

In Hydran space, the Hydrans liberated most of Hydran space (other than the Homeworld, which is still in Coalition hands, and a few of the Eastern provinces). They captured a handful of Lyran provinces and even got some ships into a Klingon province. They also killed Lyran SB 0411 (finally), by directing it over two rounds with a giant battle line.

The Gorn went on a major offensive, killing numerous Romulan BATS, capturing 2 Romulan minor planets, reclaimed most of Gorn space, captured planet 4309.

Ships killed:
-LYR: BCH, 4CW, 7FF
-KLI: 3DX, D5X, 2FX, D6M, F5W, F5E, 2F5S, F5, E4A, 8E4
-ROM: SPF, WE, SKE, SNB, K5, K4, 7SN

-ZIN: CCX, 3CMX, 2FKX, MSC, CM, LAD
-HYD: LBX, PAL, CU
-FED: 3CX, DDX, FFX, 2CVL, 4NCL, HDWE, 3FFE, 3FF
-GRN: DNT, BD, DE

46 Coalition, 32 Alliance killed (78 total ships. A new record!).

The Coalition also lost a SB, 4BATS, 10PDU (4 new planets captured/devastated; 2PDU off of captured planet 3711).

The Romulans lost a lot of ships to failed cloaks this turn, only succeeding in 6 of 17 cloaked evasions, making up for a lot of previous turn over average success.

Dice this turn were roughly even, but with the Coalition doing a little better, rolling exactly 3.5 average to the Alliance's 3.33 average.

Here is the map at the end of the turn. Lots of counting, scoring, and post game analysis to follow over the next few days:

Few days?
Analysis may take longer than that !

A big thankyou to Peter for an awesome game. We encountered a few hurdles along the way but I dont think we argued even once over anything.

A thoroughly enjoyable game. Now we count and see how much he wins by. It really will be Hydran space which does it. The Capital plus 2xSB is just SO many points.

(I'm surprised that the Lyrans built so few actual PFTs; just a single PFW, and then a pair of PFT palettes. They did build 4SCS and 8 total DNP/BCP, which explains it. They also apparently lost their original Scout Palette, and I never replaced it apparently).

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

What is interesting is that the Alliance mostly won their space back. It being assumed the Coalition could have punished the Alliance and pushed them back in turn on the following Coalition turn.

Still great to see a game completed!

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Saturday, February 15, 2020 - 05:15 pm: Edit

Like, this is one of those situations where the end of the game being a known quantity had a significant impact. But the Alliance were very clearly on an upswing; if we played CT35 from here, the Coalition certainly would have taken back a lot of space, but the Alliance certainly could have continued the offensive. The Gorn, for example, were very much poised to start hitting deep Romulan targets, including possibly their capital.

At this point (i.e. the end of AT34), the Alliance is in Klingon, Romulan, and Lyran space, and would only continue to push forward. I think the game ended just in time for the Coalition to win (if I win); another turn or two would likely have been disasterous for my side.

I know that it has been fun following the Game. I do not play F&E but enjoyed watching it progress. Well played I think on both sides. Good luck in other games.

TOTAL ALLIANCE VICTORY POINTS

-TOTAL HYDRAN VP: 194

-TOTAL GORN VP: 362.8

-Total Alliance VP: 1725.2

So at the end of AT34, the Coalition have a 150 point lead on the Alliance, so a TACTICAL VICTORY.

Coalition have 1875.8 total VP

Alliance have 1725.2 total VP.

Coalition win by 150.6 VP.

Which, all things being equal, isn't that big of a margin (it is less than a 10% edge). It is, as earlier suggested, basically holding the Hydran capital (which is 100 points, plus 20 for the SB, plus 38 points for the planets in the Capital and a few provinces).

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, February 16, 2020 - 07:56 am: Edit

In terms of total ships by the end of the war:

The Coalition have a total of 1204 ships. Of those, 108 are X ships at this particular moment.

The Alliance have a total of 1304 ships. Of those, 58 are X ships at this particular moment.

So the Alliance did overtake the Coalition in total ships by the end of the game. As noted, I suspect that if the game continued another turn or two, the Alliance could have pushed a draw or even a victory.

I'm curious how many total ships were killed over the course of the game, but that'll take some time to calculate.

By Thomas Mathews (Turtle) on Sunday, February 16, 2020 - 08:18 am: Edit

Peter, in the Empires of the Dead game, as of the combat phase of coalition half of the Fall of Y173 the dead counts are:

Alliance Ships: 188
Coalition Ships: 304

Aliliance Aux: 12
Coalition Aux: 11

Alliance Bases: 50
Coalition Bases: 38

There are 23 combat hexes to be resolved. My guess is that 20 of the 23 will see something die in the hex.

Wow, the Klingons were down to one lone "vanilla" D7! Were you keeping it safe in a backwater theatre just to claim you still had one? :)

Thank you both for over two years of entertainment and excitement!

By William Jockusch (Verybadcat) on Sunday, February 16, 2020 - 10:16 am: Edit

Looked at differently:

Bases -- Coalition has (L+K+R) 110+200+215=525
Alliance has (Z+H+F+G) 40+20+145+60=265
Coalition +260.

Capital bonus -- Coalition +100

Ships -- Alliance has 100 more ships, so +20

Economy -- Coalition has 323.2+393.2+293.6=1010
Alliance has 232+132+582.4+254.8=1199.2
Alliance +189.2. Not enough to overcome the Coalition lead in bases and capital bonus.

Total Ship Death:

Over the course of the game, the following ships were killed:

-Coalition: 1127

-Alliance: 933

-Total Ships Killed: 2060

Given that the game ended with a total of 2508 ships on the map, we almost lost as many ships as survived. The Coalition lost more than the Alliance (by about 200), which is not surprising. I ignored Tholians in these numbers (who lost, probably, a dozen ships all told), but did include AUX ships.

The vast majority of ships that died were the result of either direct damage killing or being a single FF given up to a larger group of ships attacking some province raiders. Very few ships, relative to the total number killed, were self killed just to absorb damage. Probably less than 100 ships in total over the game were killed as the result of just self killing them, and most of those happened late in the game, generally with very lopsided forces where someone self killed 2 or 3 ships rather than crippling 4 or 5, specifically to avoid further abuse in pursuit.

Most fights saw a ship direct killed; only rarely did fights not see something get killed by direct damage--very lopsided fights saw damage dropped; fights where fixed defenses were killed didn't see ships directed; occasionally over capital defenses, the defender just dropped large piles of damage to try and get the attacker to leave. But in general, it is safe to say that, like, 90% of combats saw both sides direct a ship each round (or were "4 ships kill a lone E4").

>>Wow, the Klingons were down to one lone "vanilla" D7! Were you keeping it safe in a backwater theatre just to claim you still had one?>>

Heh. I think it was in a modest feet out on the East edge of Fed space, but the Romulans, and while I was rounding up all the D7s to turn into DXs, it just always kinda dodged my notice, and then by the time I mostly ran out of D7s, I had enough D7Cs in convenient locations to convert that I didn't really need to find more.

Well done gentlemen on completing a full game.

The F&E Staff will review and recommend updated victory conditions to ADB that will look at how added modules and advanced rules should be rolled into the victory conditions of the original 1986 scenario rules.

Thanks again for well documenting this scenario.

Brief Synopsis of Game Events:

Turns 1-6: Early on, the Coalition is reasonably conservative in Kzinti space; avoiding the Capital on turns 2 and 3 while the Kzinti protected it heavily; they killed everything else with overwhelming force and only modest resistance. The Hydrans attack the Lyrans, killing both border BATS on T3. The Coalition attacked the Hydran Capital on T4, stripping all the PDUs on the homeworld as their first move and also raided the Kzinti capital, avoiding their homeworld completely, and just attacking outer systems. The Hydrans lose their capital on T6; the Kzinti have their whole capital, except Kzintai devastated by the end of T6 as well. The Kzinti Capital is never in particular danger of being captured for the rest of the game (unless they do something dumb, but they never do).

T7-9: The Klingons attack the Feds on T7, but not overwhelmingly so, killing numerous BATS and the 7th Fleet SB. They push into Fed space, killing 3rd Fleet SB , and by the end of T9, the Klingons have made modest, but not overwhelming gains in Fed space.

T10-11: Romulans attack on T10, further pushing Feds back, The Kzinti manage to kill Klingon SB 1509 on T10, due to Klingon foolishness. The Coalition kill Hydran SB 0215 on T11 (which is the last thing the Hydrans have on the map). The Klingons (and eventually Lyrans) build a SB over the Hydran capital.

T12-T15: The Gorn don't attack the Romulans on T12 or T13; the Romulans attack the Gorn on CT14. The Klingons and Romulans build co-located SBs in hex 2916 (i.e. 2 hexes from Tholian space), which gives them uncontested control of Southern Fed space, but becomes an issue later in the game.

T15-T21: The Coalition push into Fed space, redavastate the Kzinti capital (other than Kzintai, which is never attacked the whole game), and the Romulans steadily march into Gorn space, capturing Gorn (non shipyard) Capital Hex 4403 briefly. The Coalition get close to the Fed capital, but never enter it the whole game, and never kill any of the SBs surrounding it. At no point in the game is the Federation Capital in significant danger of attack, let alone capture.

T22-T28: The Tholians enter the war, which causes the Coalition to fall back from the middle of Fed space to the South, to protect the 2SBs in hex 2916 from the large Tholian fleet. The Romulans do build a SB in Fed space over planet 3711. The Coalition finally kill Kzinti SB 1704 on T25. The Tholians never really do much other than kill a few BATS, some PDUs, capture some NZ hexes, but the threat sucks a lot of Coalition ships to hex 2916, and the Alliance starts pushing back.

T29-T34: Alliance production (and XTP) finally starts evening out ship numbers. The Coalition steadily get pushed out of a lot of Fed and Gorn space. The Romulans get pushed back to their border on the Gorn front, and the Gorn start killing bases and capturing provinces; The Fed recapture most of their space, and are attacking Klingon border provinces; the Kzinti recapture most of their space, and are capturing Lyran and Klingon space, and manage to kill some BATS and capture some Coalition planets; The Hydrans manage to control most of the West of Hydran space, the south edge of Lyran space, and kill Lyran SB 0411 by the time the war ends. The Alliance are in great shape when the war abruptly is over; if it goes another couple turns, the Alliance probably turn a Tactical loss into a Tactical win.

The Alliance only ever killed 2 Coalition SBs (Klingon 1509 and Lyran 0411), but did get a lot of BATS over the length of the game. There was not a single Alliance BATS on the map when the game is over (other than one or two in capital hexes that got put up); the Feds lost all their outer ring SBs (including the one in 2901), but no interior SBs; they rebuilt the SB from 2901 by the time the war ended. Earth, Kzintai, and Ghdar I were never in any serious danger of capture, assuming the Alliance continued to defend them; in the mid 20's, the Coalition could have theoretically put a bunch of ships into the Fed capital, but the Feds always had enough ships there that attacking the Fed Capital would have been disadvantageous for the Coalition, I wouldn't have been able to capture it in less than 3 or 4 turns, and supply/repair situations would have been very fragile, so they never tried. Both non shipyard Gorn capital hexes were full devastated, and one was briefly captured, but nothing ever actually attacked the Gorn Shipyard.

Excellent write up Peter !!

Chuck, something to keep in mind is we used a mix of rules and ships from the expansions. We left out things from each of AO, CO, FO.

We didnt use rules from PO, SO (but may have had ships).

Cheers.
