Integrated example for (312.271)
A Klingon force with an SFG is attempting to freeze two ships of a Kzinti force consisting of two carrier groups ([CVL + CLE + EFF] [CMV + MEC + FKE]). The Klingon targeted the EFF and FKE (the smallest escort of each group) as (312.224) limits the Klingon to those two ships only. The first attempt resulted in a random target. Under (312.233), neither player can select the original target (EFF) of that attempt (or a previously frozen ship). This trumps all further random selection procedures. Since the SFG player can only select one eligible ship from each carrier group (the smallest unfrozen ship - one of which is the original target) he is left with only the smallest ship in the second group - FKE. The Klingon would use all three of his selections on FKE [1-3, barring the selection on a fighter (312.236)] while the defender would have to select CLE and MEC with his third selection being either escort or the FKE by (312.233).
Note that the second attempt, on FKE if frozen above, would have a -1 modifier by (312.202). Unfortunately, the die roll did not result in a random or enemy selection, resulting in the FKE being refrozen.
Directed Damage allows the SFG player to target (crippling/destroying) either the FKE (5/8), EFF (10/14), MEC (15/23), CVL+CLE+EFF (36/54), or CMV+MEC (28/44) without a mauler (escort bonus for EFF/MEC added).
