OBSOLETE

Sorry. SVC's press secretary was out and did not approve this release.

Sigh. Okay, let me try again to explain this.

1. This is a black swan event. Something has been wrong for many years and was just discovered by someone who just got here. Good for Riccardo Perni! But black swans are always difficult, emotional, and tragic.

2. You cannot change SFB (which is the basis of SFU) history, not something that is really dug in deep. We've done it under situations where there was some extreme problem or where it was very easy to do. Neither applies here. So two D7Ns it is. No way around that, no way to change it or avoid it or do anything else. Any suggestion that starts with "change the published history to say..." is not just dead on arrival, but will probably result in phaser burns.

3. Given that there are two D7Ns you have to keep things in balance. Giving the Klingons a fourth diplomat is a bad idea. Putting a D6N in mothballs is worse than unbalancing. Given them one D7N and one D6N is not just non-historical but has the problem that there is no counter. Two D7Ns with three total teams is the only solution I can find given #2 above.

4. The rulebook has been uploaded to the PDF stores. We'd look bad change it in 24 hours (we looked bad the last time we did it). I'm not saying it's not impossible but it is very difficult. Even at that, the best we can do is add a note that a D7N with one team doesn't get those bonuses, and I am not sure there is physical space to do that. I won't be able to tell until I see the file tomorrow. I cannot access it from here.

5. I made the original mistake (I wrote the original rule). I have so much to do that if I stop every line I type to check every detail nothing will ever get published. I rely on the staff (and to a lesser extent the players) to check the details. Somebody should have; nobody did until Riccardo did. So that failure took not just me and Steve Petrick but half a dozen staffers all missing the issue.

6. Haste makes waste and the D7N bonus thing is a problem That I created by not reading the entire rulebook word-for-word to see if I was going to hit a land mine since the staff would not have time to check it. Oh well, nobody's perfect.

In the end, I think we'd have all been happier in the blissful ignorance that was the pre-Riccardo epoch. I guess we could go back to that EVEN IF IT'S WRONG but none of the other proposals meet the required standards.

SVC's office has been tidied up, and the controls to the remote laser targeting system have been (accidentally, I am sure) lost.

No longer needed. - Jean, WebMom

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 - 03:13 pm: Edit

Another day, another post.

First, Jean found two typos that she failed to find the last two times she proofread the book and put a stop to the release all by herself. That bought us time.

Second, I dug into the 2006 files and found a discussion that we had given the Klingons D5N+D7N to avoid creating a D7n which has one team and no special benefits. So it was never wrong; we just didn't explain the fudge. This edition still has D7N+D5N (and the D6N is still dead, not mothballed) but has a note explaining the "Stand-in" by the D5N.

Third, no Black Swan Medal for Riccardo, Sorry about that.

Fourth, my apologies for the explosion. I was just frustrated by the situation and was de-filtered by the opioids I had taken for my still-sore sprained ankle. (Last night was "clean up the house before the cleaning lady comes Tuesday morning" and the 7,000 steps I got after 7pm really pushed that ankle a couple of miles too far.) Jean remarked that when I become president she will never let me tweet without her approval and the Marine Corps Band will attend all press conferences and start playing whenever I go off script.

I have now finished the 13 Dec edition fixing Jean's typos and this mess (and deleting some Kzinti battleships) and will momentarily give it to Jean for upload and printing.
