"Stick em with the Pointy End"

Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Federation & Empire: F&E INPUT: F&E Reports from the Front: Active Scenarios: "Stick em with the Pointy End"
By Paul Howard (Raven) on Saturday, October 26, 2024 - 05:22 am: Edit

I have started the scenario "The Wind" with my eldest Son (Henry) and Nephew (Chris) - who have never played F&E before.

To keep it simple - it's just F&E 2010 Rules and the 2.5% damage table - no expansions.

Coalition will be played by Henry and Chris (both wanted the Klingons and so they will play both...with one leading the Klingons and on leading the Lyrans - I'll get them to swop on turn 4 :) )

I'll be playing the valiant Kzinti.

Coalition turn 1 saw normal builds and the Lyrans pour across the border and killed 2 BATS.

The Kzinti reserve moved to save a BATS,, which it did, but the dice gods really liked the Lyrans - the Kzinti lost an EFF in the approach battle and and an EFF in perrusing the Lyrans - and the lyrans lost 2 crippled CL's in the persuit battle plus had afew more cripples on top.

(VBIR went up and IIRC, the Lyrans rolled a 6 both battle rounds).

The Lyran attack was actually pretty good - it left alot of Lyran ships forward deployed and Scouts ensured he could react if I did much movement.

Alliance Turn 1- Normal builds - and I had to attack 502 to be able to retrograde the Kzinti forces 'behind' the Lyran Front Fleets.

I could have been far more aggresive, but getting forces back to both SB's (and 1401) might have seen some fleets unable to do so.

Coalition Turn 2 - Normal Builds and 20 Ep's Allocated to be sent to the Klingons.

After persuading the Klingons NOT to send all of Northern Reserve Fleet to a single BATS (I had explained about ideal sizes forces etc) - the Klingons basically spread out and attacked 1 SB and 1401 (with about 40 shups) and about the Lyrans attacked 1 SB (in massive force 50 v 15 prior to reserves - although alot of the Lyran ships were FF's it turned out to be...) and the rest of the Kzinti space in effect.

(Strangely, no joint attacks).

Comabat results to follow!!!

Coaltiion turn 2 combat saw all the Border BATS go down, along with the 902 SB plus the minor planet next to it was captured.

The 1401 Raid saw 3 PDU's on Vronkett killed (it might have been 4 and Devastated though, IIRC).

The Neutral Zone minor planet was captured - and that was about it.

With most of the Lyrans in 902 - the FRD park in 1407 needed protecting by the Klingons and so limited forces was left forward by them.

1105 remains in Kzinti hands though.

Alliance Turn 2 - I overbuilt 3 FF's as had the cash (and everything else and 4 PDU's) pretty much the entire Kzinti forces go East - attacking the 1001 planet in force (902 reacted in) and this allowed the Kzinti's to forumlate a plan which involved 2 pinning battles and a attack both 502 and 504.

Lyran Reserves saved 504 and 1001 - but 502 was destroyed.

The Lyrans spent 2 Cp's over 1001 (I was going to spend 1 CP, but with the reserve arriving my chances of winning was reduced!).

The trap was swung shut on 1001!

Retrograde saw modest fleets over 1304 and 1105 - plus 1401 had the balance - and reserves in 1401 and the Barony

On to turn 3!

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Saturday, October 26, 2024 - 04:54 pm: Edit

Turn 3 - The Lyrans spend 15 Ep's (1 plus 7 doubled to 14) to supply the 40 ships in 1001 - and they build the normal things.

Enough ships go to 1105 to mean I probably can't hold it, even with a reserve fleet - 1304 is pinned and pretty much eveything else goes to 1401!

With so much in 1401 - I sen the reserve there and the other one doesn't move - my forces did need both there to provide defence outside the Capital System.

1105 is captured - a couple of cripples occur in the pinning battles in the supply blocking line.

1401 has just been finished.

Every planet bar the Captial Planet is devstated and the Capital lost all 16 PDU's.

(The Coalition 3 times rolled the exact number to wipe the owed points out and get the required number of PDU's) - but in 1 round, the Coalition did have to self kill several ships, as over 100 damage was done (45%).

With the last PDU just killed - the Coalition have had to run!

In the two smaller side battles (I only defended the Major Planets) - compot was fairly close as 3 Lyran DN's got into the hex - but the Coalition rolled 6 both times forcing an auto kill on me and I rolled poorly in them!

2 Kzinti SF's died!!

Over the Capital - the Coalition have self killed about 12 ships - will count in the morning) - I only directed on the 1 remaining Mauler in the hex! and about 60 ships off hand are crippled.

It's fair to say, the Lyrans are not impressed on the damage taken!!!

Prior to the turn, I had explained good rolls early in a Capital assault can see entire lines be crippled - and we got pretty close to that!!

Other than the 2 SF's Self Killed - a Kzinti Battle Tug has been crippled (to generate -11 owed - which didn't help much!!).

Retrograde to be done (I don't think they have enough ships unless they blow probably 30 Ep's on Field Repair) to pin me out AND set up a reasonable barrier in the south to the stop the Expedition.

((Kzinti did spend 6 Ep's Field Repairing a CVL and EFF on Alliance Turn 2, so the Coalition were not thr first to use it- the dice gods were not nice in 1 battle I was expecting to win!).

And last day of our 3 day sessions.

Retrograde, Field Repair and Strat Move so a FRD pinnng force in the North created and an Expedition nearly blocking force on the Hydran/Kzinti Border.

Coalition did spend 28 Ep's on Field Repair.

Kznit shouldn't have wasted 15 Ep's on overbuilding 3 FF's on turn 2 - had to cut a ship or two from the production run as just over 9 Ep's was blown on Drone usuage and with most of 1401 devastated - income was down on turn 2.

Hydrans skipped a DE build - but did build the UH and 3 x PDU's - and the rest.

With the Expedtion route nearly blocked - I went for the Lyrans - killing 3 BATS.

1 Lyran Reserve was pinned on the SB = and I could have done some damage - but it was not worth it - so the Hydrans ran from that battle.

In the North - I avoided the FRD park and anything witin 2 hexes of it - and bascially again attacked the Lyrans and 1 Klingon BATS.

Reserves saved 2 BATS - but the Klingon BATS did die.

I did liberate 1105 and 1001 - and killed afew garrison ships.

Retrograde saw modest 3 ship squadrons on the planets - 20 or so ships in 1304, a full fleet in 1502 and the rest in 1401.

Kzinti reserves were set up in the Barony and 1401.

Hydrans retreated back to their SB's - with so little in range of 617 - just two reserves guarded it (including the Expedition Supply Tug!)

Alliance didn't send anything on Drone or Field Repair - so turn 4 Eco wise looks better than how turn 2 ended.

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Sunday, October 27, 2024 - 06:26 pm: Edit

Turn 4 is started - and we got Coalition Eco, Movement and some combats done.

Normal builds - and about 35 Ep's spent on repairs - FRD park only has 4 FRD's in it!

Op move sees the repaired Heavy ships leading a new assault force on 1401.

1304 is bypased - and a small pinning battle is next to it (with the available Coalition forces, I couldn't react all of it off).

Coalition attacks on 1105 and 1001 are also done - and a new attack on 1202 occurs.

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Monday, October 28, 2024 - 08:28 am: Edit

Hydran Front - I missed this.

4 BATS are under attack as is the 1st Fleet SB.

There was very little in range of 617 - and not surpriseingly, it has been avoided.

So far, 1 Hydrans BATS has died, 1 more will die - and 2 may die - depending on how the Coalition press the attack home (1 is fairly well defended and the other had a reserve fleet arrive).

My other reserve went to the 1st Fleet SB - as it only had a small force (includng 2 crippled DE's) guarding it.

The Hydran Special Supply Tug was dispatched to the BATS battle over 1217 - so the Expedition can still be attempted.

On the Kzinti front - we are two proper rounds into the Capital assault (they re-devastated all the other planets again first).

Round 1 - saw a SID done and a bunch of cripples on the Coalition side

Round 2 saw a Mauler SID done, plus I crippled a 3CVS group and BC - and I direct killed a Klingon BT - plus several other ships was crippled (including self crippling the Mauler).

It is probable the homeword SB will die - although it is possible it might only be crippled (assuming 8 SID's are done - will be interesing in what ever is left plus the last Mauler will get enough to direct kill it when crippled - as the Coalition might not have enough mid-size ships and the Lyran DN's to have around 110 or so - as I will if possible, overcripple to get the required damage back over 30 (ideally 37 needed, with 11 owed!).

With the Coalition forces - a crippled SB this turn is mission kill on it - as the Coalition will come back on turn 5 to capture the hex.

CP wise - Lyrans and Klingons have 3 CP's left each - and the Hydrans have 2 CP's - Kzinti used 4 on turn 3 and 2 on turn 4 so far (all in the capital - probably should have only spent 3 CP's left turn on the defence)!!

I don't think 617 will fall - and might only be raided, so Ep+Base win is perhaps the best the Coalition achieve now.

End of turn 3 has seen 1 Alliance SB killed and 7 BATS die - and 5 Coalition BATS die.

Fair to say I think 9 more Alliance BATS will die - and probably 3 or 4 more SB's by the end of the game - so a net 25 points of bases is possible.

All to play for!!

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Sunday, November 03, 2024 - 10:49 am: Edit

Most of turn 4 Coalition battles have now been done.

The 1401 attack ended after 6 rounds.

SB has 5 SIDS on it - and the Kzinti FRD* died, plus about 12 crippled Kzinti ships.

2 Klingon BT Tugs, a C8 and Lyran DN died - plus about 40 crippled ships.

*See Discussion Topic - right or wrong :)

A crippled Mauler died in the Persuit Battle - and Kzinti crippled 2 more ships.

1001 was recaptuted by the Lyrans and 1202 has also fallen.

Alas Henry is not impressed by the outcome of the 1401 battle.

Alas for the Coaition probbaly needed 10 more CA or bigger ships - which would have got close to getting the SB crippled (and then a slim chance of 1 Shot killed after being crippled).

Coalition retreated with about 40 uncrippled ships - but most of them was F5/DD or smaller at that point.

Coalition probably would have got 1 more round - possibly 2 - killer would have been getting 18 to get the 8th SID - which probably would have been tough (I would have overcrippled after the 7th SID) - 80 Compot needing say 25 Damage is not a good chance!

A couple of battles remain to be done
