That wasn't meant as a negative. I'm still getting to know them myself.

This is the main book I am waiting for as the Kzinti are my Favorite race.

[non-sequiter]

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 11:18 am: Edit

Actually, Kzinti females in SFU are all fully sentient so your whole post is non-sequiter.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 11:59 am: Edit

OK,

When was the change made? (according to earlier posts it was stated that Kzin females were non-sentient akin to those in Known Space, yet is is unclear when this ceased to be the case)

I am not sure it ever changed, but GPD was printed in July 2002 and said that Kzinti females were sentient.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 01:31 pm: Edit

Gary: That was indeed an old topic of discussion but was found to be limiting (IIRC). It was decided by ADB that they would indeed be sentient and the first official printing of the matter was that they are. So there was in fact no actual change but a final decision that was different from that one possability was made.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 01:59 pm: Edit

When it happened, we had a dozen people scour everything in SFB-doomsday and nobody could find the reference everybody remembered to non-sentient females. There was one in an earlier edition so it apparently changed about 1990.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 06:22 pm: Edit

ok,

In that case could it have been possible that at one stage in the Hegemony's history the male Kzin forced their females into sub-sentience via some genetic manipulation, but upon contact with both the Lyran and Klingon empires, compared to which the balance of population of active members of society (those capable of working in a factory, crewing a ship or issuing orders) was heavily set against them, even by the simple fact of the Lyrans not deliberately genetically manipulating a half of their race, and despite the male Kzinti prejudices reversed the process and returned their females to sentience, but the same prejudice would limit the roles applicable for Kzin women, hence the disadvantage in certain education forms a Kzin female may face as a PC.

Perhaps it could be part of an Early Years (or Stellar Shadows) scenario, where the first Kzin females to regain sentience are placed in various parts of Kzinti society, be it civilian or military.

I know, I should just figure out when I am talking out of my hat...

FYI: In the Star Fleet Universe, they're known as Kzinti, not Kzin. And the plural is Kzintis, not Kzinti nor Kzin. Petrick bashed me about the head with a SFB rulebook for making that mistake.

Yes, very important to remember we are at least two steps away from Niven's Kzinti, which was the last place we know for certain female Kzintis were nonsentient. There is, therefore, nothing to require SFU Kzinti females to be nonsentient at any time.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 07:20 pm: Edit

Kzinti females were never non-sentient or sub-sentient in SFU. There is simply no reason to pursue that concept.

Ture, but kept un-educated is a possibility. Hmmmm ... are the Kzintis the Taliban in fur???

Nope. As it happens, "un-educated" is an actual disadvantage in GURPS, and the Kzinti females don't have it.

By Roger Bacon (Rogerbacon) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 03:31 pm: Edit

I don't have the manual in front of me right now but ,I believe, in the "Starfleet Command" (I or II) rulebook it said that all of the fighter pilots were females. Did they make that up or does SFB agree with that?

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 03:41 pm: Edit

They made that up.

Or took it from the Hydrans but still that would be inaccurate as it only amounts to "most".

By Roger Bacon (Rogerbacon) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 04:12 pm: Edit

Now that I think about it, I think it was the Hydrans because they were the only ones to have fighters in SFC 1. I guess I got it confused because only the Kzinti had fighters when I fist started playing SFB.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 04:37 pm: Edit

Everybody's got fighters in SFB!

Been playing long?

By Christopher E. Fant (Cfant) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:43 pm: Edit

Sounds like about 20 years :)

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 10:55 pm: Edit

Heh, I get it. Right!

By William F. Hostman (Aramis) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 04:42 pm: Edit

Eeee, Gadz... Have I been playing SFB that long? 1984... yup.

I recall on the GEnie boards, there was some discussion abuout Kzinti females... But I am truly much happier with the sentient females. (And there are sentient female Kzin in Niven's works. On the ringworld.)

Which reminds me, are SFU Kzinti Cat-eared or bat-wing-eared (ala Niven)?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 05:48 pm: Edit

Cat Eared with furry tails.

By Michael Powers (Mtpowers) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 07:08 pm: Edit

And Lyrans are atrocious abberations that should have been exterminated from the universe LONG AGO. I'm not sure why the Klingons bother keeping them around. Perhaps they taste good. (We prefer Hum...ah, non-intelligent food-beast. Which we keep in our secret food-beast pens. They're in a remote location. No, you can't go see it. Religious reasons, sort of thing. Uh, yeah, just like those guys in "Code of Conduct".)

By Donovan A Willett (Ravenhull) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 10:45 pm: Edit

It's sad to see such jealouscy of the noble Lyran race. BTW Cat who is called Powers, isn't taht a Klingon leg you got hidden behind your back?
