Steve, did you get my e-mail on a couple of items for the Free Tanker/Trooper notes in the deckplans section? Just checking.

Nick

ETA on the art?

And how many hours does Leanna intend to let you work over the holiday weekend?

By Aaron Hendricks (Aar0n) on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 08:11 pm: Edit

This Art guy has to get his butt in gear. We are all waiting for him.

(hope this joke hasn't been made before)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 12:20 am: Edit

The missing art will be ordered AFTER we get the report from Steve Jackson. If he says "fix these 327 typos and get to press" we can have the art in 3 days. If he says "redo chapter 2 and get back to me" we'll worry about the whole product in October.

The "Dogs" comment was both a comment on the dogs nipping at the heels, and a quote from the old Magnum PI show, where Magnum was picking a lock and some guard dogs were charging him...

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 04:02 pm: Edit

As of 3pm, I have made the changes to chapters 0-9 while Leanna has done her thing to chapters 0-7. Petrick has read 0-1.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 04:30 pm: Edit

Ok, I have done 0-10, Leanna has done 0-8. Petrick is plowing his way through Chapter 2.

Huzzah!

By Ken Humpherys (Pmthecat) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 12:03 am: Edit

YEAH! Lets hope that SJ likes the proofread.
I want! I want NOW!

By David Johnson (Djj) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 01:29 am: Edit

Finally! -- now can we start working on AO?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 09:51 am: Edit

Final proofread is the final ADB proofread; it won't go to Jackson until next week.

David: Not really. First, the DRAFT is finished, not the product. Second, I have to get CL24 and J2 out for Origins before I can look at AO.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 01:01 pm: Edit

Ya, I want CL24....bad! I look forward to GPD though. Should be lots of good reading.(The Source books are really what I'll be going for). Is GPD going to be stand alone rules or will you need another Gurps book to make it work? I'm not real familiar with the system.

By Robert Gilson (Bobcat) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 01:42 pm: Edit

GPD will be able to stand on its own. Although GURPS Space will be very helpful with it.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 08:46 pm: Edit

And Basic Set/Compendium I/Compendium II have a huge pile of more advanced and detail rules you can use.

GPD uses GURPS Lite (a condensed, but fully functional and compatible iteration of the rules) with elements from the aforementioned books (and a few others) bolted on.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 01:13 am: Edit

Any concensus on how common use of the other books will be? Or do you think the average player will be satisfied with just using GPD.

(I.E. If I only have GPD and talk about it, is everybody (or most) gonna be asking themselves "Doesn't this guy have Basic and Gurps Space? Sheesh!".)

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 03:30 am: Edit

Most current GURPS players already have some or all of the books. If they're interested in playing a PD campaign, they're probably in a space-oriented campaign already or have been (in the past). Which means that they already have BASIC SET, probably have SPACE, and the other "usual suspects".

I expect those people will continue to use the ruleset they're used to, and just use GPD for the background material and rulings pertinent to our universe (such as the racial templates).

People new to GURPS will probably use our rules initially, as GPD will be the first GURPS book they buy. Whether they transition to BASIC SET and so forth...I couldn't say. Some, eventually, yes.

However it is not a concern to me as (and I have mentioned this to SVC and others more than once) 90 percent of the rules we will ever publish are in GPD. Of the books to come, their content is going to be mostly background material, and will only include such new rules as are needed.

For example, it's been suggested that we rewrite the Vulcan psi schools in the old PD1 book PRIME ADVENTURES #1 up as GURPS psionic abilities. THOSE would be new rules. The two pages we spend writing up the philosophy of the schools would be background material. Plasma Cannon damage and use: new rules. Carnivon tactics when they used them, background. Etc, etc.

But GPD is the foundation of the whole thing we're working on. Players will need it regardless.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 10:25 am: Edit

Useful GURPS books:
Basic Set, mostly for the advanced combat rules. And some other odds and ends.

Compendium I is a pile of advantages, disadvantages, and skills. It also has the racial generation system. So it will provide more bits to help flesh out and detail characters, as well as being very useful for designing new alien races (note that a lot of the ad/disads in GPD came from this book...but there's still a ton in there).

Compendium II is lots and lots of advanced rules. Equipment, combat (including the Space Opera Combat System), hazordous materials and enviroments. This is much more of an optional book...but it is full of lots of useful stuff. In fact, if you have it, you can prob skimp on Space and High-Tech.

Space: Whilst I don't have the most current ediition, there's two big reasons to get it: the combats system (which GPD has rules on how to use for the SFU, but not a full reprint) and the stuff on astrography and how planetary systems are put together. It also has some equipment (from Ultra Techs) and hazordous enviroments (reprinted in Compendium II). Rest of the book is about doing the space campaign: discussion of FTL drive options and other such design issues.

Ultra Tech 1 and 2: Catalogues of neat toys and alien artifacts. WHat more do you want?

Bio Tech: Kind of an expansion to the Ultra Techs and the racial generation rules, govering all kinds of futuristic biological technology: cloning, implants, genemod species, nano-virus, and the like.

Psionics: If you want the full GURPS psionics system. Will give more options and abilities (and be slightly non-SFU canon, but it's your game).

Mecha/Robots/Vehicles: If you feel like ever designing your own power armor or robots or vehicles. At some we ought to come up with the design numbers for SFU weapons and armor so they can be used with these systems, but don't hold your breath.

That's a good start...

Space3's world generation section is very much Traveler-oriented. In terms of that game system, it's great.

But do not be too surprised to find a system/world generation system in MPA or MPB that is more tailored for the SFU. It could even be a separate product, depending on a number of factors.

It's already half-written. :)

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 02:29 pm: Edit

You might want to purchase some Visine for you all. Too bad Starbucks does't deliver.

Thanks for the info guys! Very helpful. :)
