Pelgrane Press (publishers of GUMSHOE) are doing a kickstarter for Hillfolk, the first RPG in their Dramasystem line. Looks like it's going to be open-license, and if they get to $50K pledges GUMSHOE will be made open-license as well. Might be of interest to those who do "non-traditional" RPGs.

Would there be any interest in a set of LARP rules for PD?

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 05:03 pm: Edit

That would be cool, I'd buy them.

Ok, then I'll finish what I've started on then.

James, I talked with SVC and it does sound interesting. Be aware though that I cannot touch them until I am in Amarillo. My guess is that May is going to be settling in and getting things ready for Origins and then mid-June I should be ready to work in something new.

And that is not a promise that LARP rules will be that thing. In fact, I don't see Jean having time for "something new" during 2013. She has three more Traveller books to do first.

@Steve & Jean
No worry, it will take me a while to write them anyway.. So this just gives me a lot more time...
:-)

Somebody sent me an email about some RPG system he likes. It's fairly new and I had never heard of it, which isn't at all a bad thing. I explained to him these key points:

1. We do want to do new systems.

2. ADB is not going to do the conversion in-house. We will need a reliable outside designer who can provide the replacement text (see #3). We do not have the years it would take for in-house people to learn a new system to expert level.

3. The way to do them is to take our existing books and replace the game system stuff while leaving the history, background, art, technology, and so forth intact. We are not interested in an outside author rewriting or changing history. If an author wants to create some new stuff it will have to be handled separately as a general submission and used in some other product. For example, the fiction in the Klingon book will be the same in the Klingon book of every game system. If somebody want to write a new Klingon fiction story, we will review it as any other fiction story and if it gets publish it will be in some other product.

4. The way the above gets done is we do the page layout in-house using text files and instructions sent by the outside designer. This might be "replace everything on page 38 with this file" or "on page 42 halfway down the left column it says "TL6" and that needs to be changed to "HL4".

Modiphius, publishers of the excellent Star Trek Adventures RPG, are in the process of opening up their 2d20 RPG system to the community and to commercial publishers as well. The System Reference Document is downloadable now from their website, and further info on the licensing possibilities are coming soon.

I thought this may be something to look into for PD, since Star Trek Adventures is a very successful game with an active player base of Star Trek fans, and the 2d20 system works very well there (as it does in the other 2d20 games, like Dune, Homeworld, etc.). Fans of TOS are well served by the game, given the recent release of the Tricorder Collectors Set which is exclusively focussed on that era. Perhaps an 'SFU Campaign Guide' or similar would be enticing to STA players?

The line developer for STA (Jim Johnson) is pretty accessible via the STA sub-Reddit, Discord, etc. I'm guessing he'd be a good point of contact if ADB thought there were any mileage in this idea.

I could see this being done BUT I am not sure Paramount would allow us to do it. They tend to draw a sharp line between ADB and "official licensees".

Note that we are a licensee but they don't want us using the title "official license". They seem to have invented that title just to exclude us.

I should note that:
1. I'm dubious that "canon trek" people would care for our non-canon product even if our background makes more sense. After all, we cannot give you Kirk's stats.
2. We'd need a designer. I'm busy (and the cold cruel world hurt my feelings when it told me I'm too stupid to write RPG rules).
3. Even with Paramount approval and a designer on hand, I would be astonished if we could do a book in a year. Jean and Al have been working on Traveller for at least that long.

None of which means we shouldn't try to do it, but there is always the question: "If Paramount says today they don't object will that be their answer after we spend a year of work on it?" And somebody (who is not me) will have to recruit a designer able to do it.

By Eric Silverman (Ericsilverman) on Monday, August 15, 2022 - 02:40 pm: Edit

Yeah I thought that Paramount might be a concern, but I figured it was at least worth flagging this up just in case :)

One thing I can say is that the STA community is blessed with some talented people making cool homebrew non-canon stuff, so I'd imagine it could be possible to find someone enthusiastic about the design side. Modiphius has also been saying they want to actively help smaller creators use 2d20 successfully, so maybe they can even assist somehow??

In any case, I'm not talented enough with the system yet to be confident in design, but if this idea were to progress somehow, I'd absolutely volunteer to playtest, proofread, etc.

Email me their website and contact email and when I get a chance I will drop them a note.
