Thanks Dwight for pointing out it was a LONG running Gurps forum discussion.

Guess i should have said what was left out, sorry.

Thanks for the links, guys!

According to the nice folks at SJ Games, this is going to be a product of some kind, not one of their freebie downloads. Maybe it is currently in PDF format?

In any event it looks like this is indeed what we need. Hopefully I'll have a copy in a couple of days, so we'll be able to get moving on it.

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Wednesday, April 05, 2006 - 08:18 am: Edit

hmm...could you get permission to post that copy here so we could playtest?...or email it to those who participate here?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 05, 2006 - 11:09 am: Edit

Probably not. If it's a product, they're going to want to sell it. They agreed to give it to a limited number of SFU stuff for purposes of doing new products they get paid royalties on.

GURPS Space 4e doesn't actually have ship construction or even ship combat rules. has some neat create an alien rules though.

Well if and when it comes down to playtesting any of the GURPS PD Ship Building/Combat...let me know...I would be interested...I'm a long time GURPS fanboy, and SFB fanboy as well. Playing GURPS since the beginning. SFB for about 15 years now.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 11:06 pm: Edit

Well, you sound like a PRIME candidate!

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Thursday, April 13, 2006 - 12:32 am: Edit

Sean: I'll keep you in mind, but I haven't gotten anything from SJ Games yet, so work on GPD Starships has not gotten started yet.

By Sean Bartholome (Kana) on Thursday, April 13, 2006 - 07:30 pm: Edit

I know...but I figured I'd put my hat in...It is one of the few products both GURPS and PD I'm interested in...

By Eulis Hill (Starlocke) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 08:25 pm: Edit

How do I get on the list? I have a small group that could playtest that would be perfect (balanced with Role Players and WarPlayers). I have been playing GURPS since the 3rd Ed hard cover released, and Playing SFB for about... wait... lets just say over 15 years before I sound like a really old geezer.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 - 09:52 pm: Edit

A lot of us are old geezers here. Don't worry about it. :)

By Eulis Hill (Starlocke) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 01:15 am: Edit

LOL, well I remember buying the rulebook only when I was 15. I had to wait and save my allowance for a box set when I was 16 I think. I am 36 now so ... 20 years sounds about right

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 03:06 am: Edit

Still nothing from SJ Games, so don't hold your breath.

Until I get that, work cannot start, and until then there's nothing that needs to be done.

By Dwight Lillibridge (Nostromo) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 03:41 am: Edit

can ya add me to the list of those interested in any playtest related to the subject? I have free time now and would be interested.

on another note, not surprised at nothing from SJG.....nuff said, some things are just a rash on the caboose. my personal guess is nothing until SJG has released the product for sale and then it will be "you needed what?" and Oh just get the PDF. ka-ching

sorry I am being negative today.....

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 11:33 am: Edit

Negative, certainly. But probably accurate, I would guess.

And to tell the truth, I cannot blame them.

By Eulis Hill (Starlocke) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 12:52 pm: Edit

I have a deep respect for SJG though. Their products are always top notch. Don't publish until it's ready and GOOD! unlike some companies that rhyme with Lizards of the Boast. D20 modern has been a disappointment for me.
That's why I don't mind shelling out big bucks for the books in 4th ed. Nice paper, nice covers, built to last until I die.
I don't begrudge the time they spend making the product great, I ache for more. The only thing that I miss out of D20 in GURPS is a discreet leveling system that gives the players a sense of “I made it to the next level”

By Dwight Lillibridge (Nostromo) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 06:46 pm: Edit

I have my grudges with the new 4e line, for the most part I do say the books are pretty and color is the best change. from observation though is that SJG does do a few buisness choices I would disagree with that does hurt the product line.

in this case for example is when they didn't make mention of the new line until the last minute and while not telling the public they should have told those who were writing materials for the product line. the last minute hey we changes everything and 3e is obsolete and not totally game compatable was a very bad decision.

then again opions are like..............insert whatever comment you are use to.

By Robert Gilson (Bobcat) on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 09:59 pm: Edit

The playtest went pretty well for the vehicle design system. Last I heard the final draft is being written or was finished can't remember which. So give it a few months for editing and layout then they will have it on e23.

By Sean Bartholome (Kana) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 05:45 am: Edit

Yes, but they should already have a set of 'design' guidelines for writers to have vehicles in the worldbooks that they are working on. The VDS they will release is for the masses to have, so they can geek out and design their own vehicles.

By Eulis Hill (Starlocke) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 11:47 am: Edit

then made a polite communication between ADB and SJhisownself is in order since having a close release boosts sales for SJG.

By Robert Gilson (Bobcat) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 12:49 pm: Edit

For all I know VDS is the only current design system. My guess is that until the VDS is finalized they basicly had David make up whatever vehicles they needed for whatever supplement they needed them for. But this is my theory not fact.

By F. Douglas Wall (Knarf) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 03:32 pm: Edit

I heard something similar. From what I heard, for GURPS Fantasy, Pulver was unavailable, so they had somebody else eyeball some vehicle stats to put in the book.

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - 11:31 pm: Edit

A new book out for GURPS has some interesting Starship combat and design rules:

GURPS Traveller: Interstellar Wars is an official GURPS Fourth Edition sourcebook for the Traveller universe. It includes a detailed timeline, along with rules for tailoring characters to the last days of the First Imperium, starship design, interstellar trade, exploration, and ship-to-ship combat.

Gary Plana: I sent you an E-mail, did you get it? It's about PD Federation.
