What would the THoloans use for balance?

Produce an "improved webfist" that is swapped out for the Disr & Photons. And scatter MANY rocks around every base in Tholian space. So the X2 Klingons would HAVE to spend the energy constantly to avoid the many cast webs.

The improved webfist:
1) Range and Damage output improved to about the same energy/ damage throughput as the vanilla photon & Disr PLUS can cast web.
2) Swapped out for all/ most disruptors, photons, webcasters and snares.
3) Can be used a plain old web generator too...

It would lead to weird changes where the Klingons would refit the Tholian Border Squadron but not the rest of the fleet.

We probably shouldn't convert this threat into an X2 discussion.

I would like to point out though that disruptors will probably always be the easiest and cheapest to produce weapon for the Tholians since it is made from reasonably easy to find local materials and is technologically easilly accessable (also easier field maintenance).
I would assume, anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me if basic shield crackers weren't within reach of the Tholians (particularly after the 312th provided various important computer codes). Their main problems is that the shield cracker isn't really a fleet weapon that is better than the weapons the Holdfast already has. Or it could be that this particular sphere didn't have the data (too new) and the 312th didn't either (or lost it).

Loren,

IF the ability to cast web becomes more common then the Tholians would definately revert to the mostly phaser design.

Alternatly I would prefer to see the Tholians figure out how to make Particle Cannon. Anything to get them out of the Disruptor/ Photon rut.

Perhaps a lightning raid on a a remnant Selt PC factory on their planet before the Klingons came and filled the atmosphere with RAID?

By Jon Murdock (Xenocide) on Thursday, December 09, 2010 - 02:12 pm: Edit

The Particle Cannon is tactically inferior to the Disruptor and the Photon when fighting from behind web (less exposure to fire to get your shots in). I can't see them reverting back to particle cannons.

Maybe a few testbed ships to examine the possibility?

Ugh!!! No particle cannons for late era Tholians! It's not quite tech-sloshing in the usual sense, since they had the technology at one time. But it's close enough. Let the particle cannon stay a (late era) Selt-only weapon.

Right now I'm kind of regretting the snotty tone of my 2:33 PM response to Mike Grafton's 2:06 PM post. But the discussion properly belongs in the X2 Tholians topic. Some time this evening I will post a longer response there, explaining why I don't like the idea of Tholians reverting to particle cannons.

Just curious if there is a timeline for PD Tholians to be produced, I have not been around for a while and I thought this was coming out years ago, but I can't find it on the products page.

Jim;
It has not been released yet. The only work apparently being done on RPGs since the Mongoose announcement is a book bringing Prime Directive to Mongoose's version of Traveller. RPGs appear to be a causality of the Mongoose agreement.

Hi David;

Thanks for the reply, but what was the Mongoose announcement? :)

Pardon me, that should read agreement, not announcement, and it is to late to edit it.
