We are in a holding pattern until we finish F&E-2010 and PD Feds. Then we'll look at the chapter we have and try to sort out the licensing situation.

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Friday, May 07, 2010 - 07:49 pm: Edit

Ah, is this coming into the light soon then?
I would really like to be a playtester for this.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, May 07, 2010 - 10:04 pm: Edit

Darren, I will keep you in mind for when we do this. The licensing situation still hasn't shaken out, as I understand it.

Darren, it still looks like there's enough chaos in the D6 world that I want to wait for it to shake out.

I hear you. Not sure what's going on over there either. It "seems" like d6 is going "free," but it depends on who you talk to. They have posted all the d6 main books as free downloads, however.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 07:30 am: Edit

(sigh) Free downloads doesn't mean that the IP is free to be used elsewhere. Theoretically, he can give copies of his product away, but if I used them to create a derivative product, he could demand a slice of the cake and tell us to cease and desist if we couldn't agree on the size of the slice. If he changed his mind and sold the IP, then the new owner could do the same. I don't want anyone to have that power over one of our products.

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Saturday, May 15, 2010 - 11:34 pm: Edit

that makes sense, The D6 Powers is it's own thing separate from WEG.

By William F. Hostman (Aramis) on Saturday, May 22, 2010 - 06:41 pm: Edit

I've D/L'd books from WEG prior to the site going down... they included the Wizards OGL, properly identifying the WEG Rules as open content, for d6 Space. They identified the d6 logo, the interior and cover art, specific layout and the book name as product identity, and everything else as open content. (last 3 para of the OGL inclusion in the file)

In other words, yes, it really is open content, fair game for use by others.

What I've not seen is a d6 System Trademark License. So while "PD6" could be used, indication of compatibility via the d6 logo or "compatible with d6 Space by WEG" would be the glitch.

This has gotten rid of the need for the System Trademark License.

So, does all this help make a PD d6 more of a reality?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - 12:14 am: Edit

I would need to talk to my author first. And I would need to make a decision about which direction to jump -- Savage Worlds, D6, or Mongoose Traveler. But yes, it does help as it seems there may be a clear path to the book being legally doable.

Thanks for your help!

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - 07:01 pm: Edit

The only thing, is that with d6 OGL, we would pretty much have to stay with "this" d6 version and not the older d6 "Star Wars" version. But, at least this is more doable now.

Glad to help, by the way :)

Big player of d6 in its infancy and evolution, would love to be involved in playtesting PD d6

By William F. Hostman (Aramis) on Saturday, June 26, 2010 - 04:25 pm: Edit

Darren: the big difference between the OGL d6 space and the d6 SW 2E Revised and Expanded (2ER) amounts to:
1) renaming "the force" to "psionics,"
2) renaming "Force Points" to "Fate Points"
3) adding a ship design system
4) adding an option for a body point system (hit points)
5) adding advantages and disadvantages.
6) adding one more wound level but only having one wound per level
7) adding an optional "cash roll" system for those who don't like tracking money
8) deleting all obvious references to the SW universe in text and art.

It uses the same mechanics as 2ER, including for scaling. NOT my favorite scaling system, but it was in 2ER.
If 2ER was 2.5, then d6 Space is 2.75; if it was instead 2.1, it's about 2.2. Depends upon your view of the relationships between D6 SW editions.

What it needs is the templates, ships, and gear, and a trimming of the options to a more cross-group consistent baseline.

Jean: MGT won't scratch the same itch as d6... the tones are VERY different. MGT has a much larger market presence, and is a 2d6 does everything, moderatelty gritty; d6 is a dice pool, with a fading recognition but very awesome cinematic system.

I can't speak experientially to Savage Worlds... but the games so far are all pretty pulpish, and thus fairly cinematic levels of play are implied.

Hello. Now that WOTC has given up the Star Wars license, I find it hopeful that d6 might see new life. Given the fact that d6 is OGL now, it will hopefully make it easier for other people to use it as a game engine. A lot of gamers remember the original and modified versions of the West End Games d6 system. To be honest, I felt that the SW universe was better reflected by the mechanics of the d6 system instead of the d20. WEG has pretty much dissappeared to be replaced by a user forum.

Given the fact that there is no "official" Star Trek RPG anymore, I think that PD RPG shows hopeful future for anyone to take those stats and mechanics and mold it into any "version" of the ST universe they want. Yes, you can start from stratch with any system to "build" your universe, but it's really nice when you have something to start with already. I know people who have taken the GURPS PD and molded into canon ST RPG's. I love both the ADB universe and the Paramount universe. So, if a d6 version of PD comes about, using OGL, doesn't that give ADB more room to create and expand...and no middle man?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 - 09:25 am: Edit

Darren, I would need to ask my writer how much rewrite it would take to go with the OGL.

By Darren Kehrer (Kehrer1701) on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 - 02:45 pm: Edit

By going with the d6 OGL, doesn't than mean what you create is your and you do not have to pay anyone else (like WOTC, SJG, etc)?

Also, here are the FREE materials of WEST END GAMES posted on DriveThru RPG...

Jean, did your writer ever comment on OGL for d6?

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 11:15 am: Edit

Darren, not yet. I know he has been busy personally and I've been swamped at the RL job and trying to get GURPS Feds done.

By Jeffry Willis (Jeffrywith1e) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 01:29 pm: Edit

I'd like to know how the Prime Directive D6 is going (if it is still going to happen).

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 01:45 pm: Edit

My author is aware of the open license and also knows that I'm trying to get GURPS Feds done first.
