Stewart Frazier will take a crack at this ship. Everyone please help him all you can.

By Stewart W Frazier (Frazikar2) on Saturday, September 01, 2012 - 10:39 pm: Edit

Howdy, footprint of the ship is done, think I have the decks setup right and have blocked in the impulse, disrupters, and most of the shuttle bay areas (must remember to add the spare shuttle somewhere)

Headroom lines added for all those sloping sides (I think anyway)...

Stewart,

You have a unique opportunity here. You get to set the "tone" for all Lyran ships to come. Don't just build a human ship that happens to be a catamaran; build a Lyran ship.

One of the biggest items on a Federation ship is the crew quarters and quality of life features (chow hall, recreation areas, gym, etc.). Humans want to sleep alone in their own bed (well, sometimes they'll share with another). But have you ever seen a bunch of cats (six or more) in the same house? They tend to sleep in clusters. Check with the background information and see what SVC says, but I would consider making a typical Lyran crew quarters a communal sleeping area rather than individual beds. That will tend to free up a ton of space that you could use for other things.

You would be in Jean's territory, not mine, on Lyran sleeping habits.

I know Isis won't sleep anywhere Ramses can get, as she finds his hulking body (twice her size) a bit "crowding".

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Sunday, September 02, 2012 - 03:53 am: Edit

Just to be clear, I don't mean one big sleeping room for the entire crew, but rather several for up to say no more than a dozen per pillow.

And Steve, what are you doing up at quarter to three in the morning?

Lyrans we know look like Terran lynxes, although some apparently have housecat fur colors. (CL#15)

They are mentioned as having lynx-like characteristics and lynxes are fairly solitary animals. I'd suggest that Lyrans may need more privacy, not less, in order to ease the stress of being social all day. My guess is that they are fairly classic introverts who need alone time. The rooms probably aren't large, but they are there.

That's my guess and reasoning.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, September 02, 2012 - 05:31 pm: Edit

Garth: my blood pressure medcine has me up every two hours. If the book in the bathroom gets to an interesting chapter, I finish the chapter. Then, being awake, I go check the computer.

Also note that the time zone for my house is not the time zone the board is on. It is 4:30pm right now in my office, and I guess the same time at the house.

Will the plans for the Lyran CA be based on the approved version of the 2500-series model (whatever it may end up being); or is it based on the older 2400-era design?

By Stewart W Frazier (Frazikar2) on Sunday, September 02, 2012 - 11:51 pm: Edit

Hmmmm, wild thought, just what is in the engine struts? I was thinking main fuel storage (with some secondaries in the main hull) along with the main 'jeffries tube' down to the engines...

Finished blocking in the phasers (check for control rooms), tractors, disrupters and engineering rooms for the impulse and warp engines...still to block in the bridge, probe and scanner in the central bridge (is the little raises area on top part of the bridge or something else as it's not large enough to be its own room but is large enough to allow for the bridge to have a raised area for the captain's chair/area (bridge life support maybe)...

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 01:34 am: Edit

Stewart, that's what I did for the bridge on the POL. The bubble wasn't tall enough to be the entire bridge, so I just made it a dome cover.

Gary - I don't think the minis are different enough for it to matter.

The deck plans always end up taking on their own changes and don't necessarily match the minis exactly. Note how Nick Blank's exterior drawings get the point across, but certain things are tweaked to meet the needs of the internals.

Stewart - I'd assume mostly fuel and mechanical in the engine struts on the Lyrans. Those struts are big and thick enough to be used for something useful and fuel's a likely candidate.

Something Stupid I know.

SVC mentioned that only large Federation ships have dentists. I would expect that those species that are apex predators (for a quick example in Alpha, Carnivon, Gorn, Kzinti, Lyran.) would have dentists on all their ships, since teeth are so important to survival, combined with the fact that larger canine like teeth are broken more easily than molars.

As already stated I know it's stupid for a game, but it has stuck in my head since it was mentioned.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 11:20 am: Edit

ADM: Perhaps dentestry for Lyrans is part of the regular medical field.
Actually, I'd think most starship doctors would have some general orthopedic skills (or at least can follow the manual on the medical computer).

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 10:50 pm: Edit

Personally, I think dentistry would be just another medical service, by the time of the SFU setting. But, I'm also the one thinking starships in that time period would consider barbers redundant.

Heck. 300 years ago, barbers *were* the surgeons. I think roles can be expected to change in another couple hundred.

"OK Joe I'm ready for transport. By the way, could you run hair modification Lieutenant Paulson Alpha Two on me during transport? I'm getting a little scruffy."

"Sure thing Dave... Paulson...Paulson... ah here it is. Hair mod alpha two laid in."

By Stewart W Frazier (Frazikar2) on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 - 08:45 pm: Edit

Let's see, Lyran Tiger CA, length - 150m (excluding engines/struts, ~185 m with), width - 117.5 m, height - 12.25 m (excluding engines, ~52 m with) [3 deck in middle, 4 decks in outer hull)

System - Campaign Cartographer 2.599

Currently, major features (phasers, disruptors, tractors beams, shuttle bays and impulse) blocked in, working on central bridge area, think main bridge is 16x10 footprint with Captain's office, Briefing/Conference room adjacent

To add probe (1/2), scanner (2), Captain's Quarters (3), XO's quarters (3), [what else??] maintenance/machine shops [spare parts] (1), Bridge life support (4)...

By Nick G. Blank (Nickgb) on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 - 09:10 pm: Edit

Does campaign cartographer export a vector format that ADB can use? I am looking at campaign cartographer 3, and it exports vector, but does not specify what format.

By Stewart W Frazier (Frazikar2) on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 - 11:47 pm: Edit

CC2 exports enhanced metafile (.EMF), AutoCAD DWG and DXF...and can import the two autoCADs plus EasyCAD ECW and CC-DOS FCD

Not sure how that stacks with the ADBs Freehand?...

Check under convert files or import/export

Deck One covers (roughly) 11,675 square meters though I haven't subtracted for the Impulse engines or disruptor banks (~11525)

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, September 05, 2012 - 09:58 am: Edit

I think CC2 uses a CAD program (EasyCAD ???) as the engine upon which they added the customized tools for map drawing.

Ack, just noticed several small problems that create a bigger headache then fixing, so it's time to start over and add a few items to the checklist to make things a bit easier (or at least heading in the right direction)...

[and I had just 'finished' the 4th deck with 190 crew quarters (leaving only 224 more to go) but had a small problem with the turbolift system]

By Stewart W Frazier (Frazikar2) on Thursday, September 06, 2012 - 11:24 pm: Edit

Question on the Lyran Flag bridge - just what is supposed to be there, is it a 'bridge' or more a suite that the Count uses (and where does his retainer reside, in adjacent quarters [part of the suite] or they take over some junior officer/crew quarters to bed down?)

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, September 06, 2012 - 11:42 pm: Edit

I'd say a flag bridge is a command center, much like the bridge, but it wouldbn't need (but could have) a dedicated helm station.

RE: starting over -- welcome to the club.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Friday, September 07, 2012 - 12:01 am: Edit

The fiction story showing the death of the Crown Prince (I can't recall which issue of Captain's Log it was in), that led to the Kzintis being the first to get hit by the Coalition in the General War, had parts of it set in the flag bridge of the Lyran cruiser (a CC, I think?); if anyone recalls that story, and has it to hand, it may have notes on how the flag bridge was set up.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, September 07, 2012 - 12:17 am: Edit

it's basically a bridge, and it does have a helm.

less science/engineering and more commo stations.

"just what is in the engine struts"

Would be a good place for waste heat radiation equipment.

Ships in That Other Universe often have something named "flush vent" or "emergency flush vent" in their struts but I wouldn't go there for SVCs ships if I were you. If you wanted to add that feature, you might think about tying a line from any "power transfer conduit" type engineering you have in the strut to some feature on the surface representing the vent.
