You cannot limit your discussion to the design of Kzinti ships and drones. Sadly, you also have to take into account Klingon ships. In the early years through to the pre-general war years the Klingons had limited drone racks in terms of launching drones (I have not checked when "D(one)" series ships turned up. The D6D did not have any limits on its drone launches, but D7s and D6S only kicked out at most two drones over a turn break (the "B" refit let them launch at a faster rate),

And here I was thinking that it was an early style choice to protect the main hull from a chain-reaction explosion, like the Klingons suffer from their “jump” racks. The further the weapon is away from the tender parts of the ship, the better for the rest of the crew.
Then again, shlepping drones down those arms is how the Kziniti Weightlifting Team earned their well deserved reputation.

The Kzinti put the explody things on booms far away from the important parts of the ship.
The Klingons put the important parts of the ship (Klingons) on booms far away from the explody things.
The Federation bought removeable fuses and stores the explody stuff under the cafeteria.

I'll have to check the rules but I don't remember if the Klingon Drones chain react despite being in the shuttle bay. The Klingon answer to my question might be that most of the chain reaction goes out the shuttle bay doors. I was thinking for the Kizinti, lore wise assuming nothing was Canon yet, that some important Kizinti ship lost a warp engine to a chain reaction. Afterwards the new ships where planed to avoid that.
For reference I also play Battletech where ammo explosions are a thing, so I might be applying some of that logic to this project.

Andrew, FD3.6 states that Type "F" or Klingon Jump Racks CAN explode in a D12.3 chain reaction, but C8, C9, and B10 hulls have a separate 'bay' just for the racks.
