Before I head out for the usual weekend festivities;

SPECIAL OPERATIONS SHUTTLE; In SFB terms a two space shuttle that has all the amenities of a mobile home, plus a hardpoint or two and some bunks, a small scientific work bench with computer, weapon's locker, shower, hot plate :). Essentially a "Winnebago" shuttle, but a shuttle nonetheless.

I think someone proposed something like this on the old thread, but I also had this similar idea at the same time. I just haven't voiced it until now.

Just a thought.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Friday, March 22, 2002 - 11:37 pm: Edit

Sounds like a double-sized Admin shuttle to me. Didn't that get proposed over on the SFB side, and was promptly shot down for some reason?

I did propose that modular shuttle a while back, though...

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 01:35 am: Edit

Don't you just hate it when your Friday's don't pan out?

Anyway, yeah I suppose it could be considered a double sized admin, but I don't see the problem with it. There's nothing special about it other than it can act as a home away from home for a landing party. It wouldn't carry any extra firepower, at least not in SFB terms. No mines. No fancy gadgets like a cloak or TB. It's just someplace where the landing party can take five and read a magazine after a long hot day of doing whatever it is they were doing :)

Not sure what else to say.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 04:29 am: Edit

George, did you ever consider using GURPS VEHICLES to design a custom shuttlecraft? It would be perfectly legal in GPD, but not in SFB.

(Hmmm ... another MPA article?)

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 10:59 am: Edit

Reminds me of the big "Urban Assult Vehicle" from the movie STRIPES. :)

Gary; consider it done. I'll draft something, and do a little write up of it.

Garth; LOL, I never thought of that, but yeah, that's a good parallel :)

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 02:30 pm: Edit

Actually, you don't need to do it in VEHICLES.

If you use the ship design system in SPACE3 and the additions to SPACE3 that are in GPD (a big section all its own) you can custom design a shuttlecraft (or something bigger -- a LOT bigger) for use in GPD.

Of course, if you propose a custom starship to SVC for incorporation into SFB, he's certain to shoot it down, literally and figuratively; the question is whether he saves a shot for you!

The SPACE3 stuff in GPD details all the systems in SFB that are not in SPACE3. Things like SFB arc-mounted weapons (example Phaser-1-FA) versus turret-mounted or spinal-mounted weapons, how much damage a Photon does in SPACE3 terms, etc.

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Saturday, March 23, 2002 - 03:00 pm: Edit

LOL, oh good! I was about to head out to Gator Games to purchase a copy of GURPS vehicles :)

Yeah, it's not really an SFB thing. I'm thinking of giving it things and abilities that would be pertinent to a RPG environment. Something like a mini medical table or first aid station. A locker for weapons or other valuable equipment. Maybe a water purifier, or something that can convert a gas giant's amonia atmosphere to drinkable water. Little interesting things like that.

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 03:54 am: Edit

Errrrr......Space 3? What happened to Space 1 and Space 2? Are there three Space moduals? Don't tell me I have to spend $60+ just to make this small proposal.

By Jeremy Gray (Gray) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 04:16 am: Edit

OK, I'm not a role playing guy at all, but when I read the first post in this topic, I could only think of one thing.

SPACEBALLS...Winnebago with wings.

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 11:55 am: Edit

George, they are refering to the third edition of GURPS Sapce, not to a three volume supplement :)

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 02:14 pm: Edit

George: I'm referring to GURPS SPACE 3rd edition. SPACE 2nd edition is out of date, but there might be a few copies still for sale, and you don't want to buy one of those.

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 02:29 pm: Edit

Jeremy; Curses! You've discovered my secret plot! But imagine; a Winnebago with the Star Fleet banner painted on the side. :)

Alex, Gary; phew! Thanks :)

By Dwight Lillibridge (Nostromo) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 07:39 pm: Edit

is there a conversion or system of rough conversion of gurps vehicles to SFB SSD format?

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Sunday, March 24, 2002 - 10:01 pm: Edit

Not precisely. But as GPD tells you how to convert an SSD to Space3 specs, it can probably be figured out. But for things like a spinal meson mount, you're out of luck.

Is it OK to ask what a Galileo Shuttle's cDR and PD is?

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 07:43 pm: Edit

SVC will have to answer that; I don't have a current copy of chapter 9, which is where it is.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 07:53 pm: Edit

This is what's in the file. It's all greek to me.

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 08:26 pm: Edit

Hmm, OK. This helps as a reference. I've a craft that has ~4400 cu ft of interior space (assuming I calculated it right), accomodates 10 (9 crew plus one officer). I had a pretty good idea for armor, but I didn't know what combat and defense rating to give it. This helps a lot, particularly with all the other data supplied. Thanks a lot!

By Nick Blank (Nickb) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 10:52 pm: Edit

SFB Speed 8 is warp 2, so how come the speed 6 shuttle is listed as warp 2.5? Is it "high warp" or something like that?

Just curious,

Nick

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:08 am: Edit

See previous memo RE: "all greek".

4400 feet?

Let's see. Maybe 10 feet wide, 30 long, eight high (and that's a stretch) yields 2400. And that's a stretch.

By Kenneth Peters (Tzeentch) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:22 am: Edit

500 Megawatt seconds? Might want to delete the "s" at the end of MW so noone gets confused as to the units :)

By Captain Ebersole (George_Ebersole) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:41 am: Edit

SVC; yeah, I did a rough sketch of it, and took the measurements from that to get the volume. Last year (when I first came up with this idea) I did a three view drawing in Autosketch, and compared the overall dimensions to the Enterprise's shuttle bay. The craft barely fit then.

I'm gonna have to rethink this.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:10 pm: Edit

Rethink smaller by about a third. While I don't see any problems with a double-space shuttle, yours is a triple, and that isn't going to fit.

For now, look at the deckplan for the Free Trader in CL23 for max dimensions. Same deckplans but bigger (plus the overlays) will be in GPD.
