Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Prime Directive RPG: NEW KINDS OF RPG PRODUCTS: GPD Deck Plans: Archive through April 11, 2002
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Saturday, April 06, 2002 - 03:28 pm: Edit

I the Star Trek fans thread we ended up talking about Fasa. Their Star Trek RPG had some great deck plans. I had my friend look up his. He'll let me know soon.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Saturday, April 06, 2002 - 04:03 pm: Edit

If new deck plans must be drawn then perhaps in Captains Log there could be intermitant drawings of main sections. Bridge, Transporter room, Sickbay, Enginering. I have drafting skills but my CAD skills don't exist. My computer right now is too slow to bother.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Saturday, April 06, 2002 - 10:03 pm: Edit

The deckplans in CL23 were a preview, don't expect to see deckplans in CL again, any time soon. Deckplans will be in GPD products like MODULE PRIME, which is kinda the equivalent of CL for GPD, sorta.

The complete set of FT deckplans (which were drawn by Nick Blank, BTW) will be in GPD. Larger sized, and it will include overlays for variants (which were not in CL23).

F-FF and variants are scheduled for MPA, K-F5 and variants for GK. Skyhawk highly probable but not finalized for GR.

Are there stil plans to do seperate deckplan products? Something like the ones for GURPS Traveller: big ol map sheets and a some cardboard hero counters. I'd go one fourther and pack in a 16 or 32 page booklet with detail info and background on the ship class and variants, and generic NPC status to go with the cardboard heroes (so the Kzinti CVS package would have the infamous weightlifting team).

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Sunday, April 07, 2002 - 01:50 pm: Edit

SVC and I have discussed deckplan products, but not more than briefly. As you know, right now the main effort is getting GPD to press, and everything else is on the back burner until that gets done.

Personally, I think deckplans for certain classes of ships (such as Fed and Klingon CAs) would sell like hotcakes to the mainstream trek fans as well as gamers. I don't believe anyone has done a good set in 20 years, 10 certainly.

I'd like to see them, we have people who are capable of doing them, so they're a definite possibility. Just not this week! :)

Has any thought been giving to contacting Lincoln Enterprises and seeing if ADB or SJG might be able to market the old McMasters blueprints. If they are out of print, perhaps reprinting them?

The deckplans in CL23 were a preview. If Petrick (who handles CapLog) comes up with pages to fill and there are GPD deck plans laying around, we'll consider using them.

The complete set of FT deckplans will be in GPD in larger size with overlays. Well, that's the plan, we'll see how page count goes.

F-FF and variants are scheduled for MPA, K-F5 and variants for GK. Skyhawk highly probable but not finalized for GR. SVC likes all of these theories.

Are there stil plans to do seperate deckplan products? YES.

As you know, right now the main effort is getting GPD to press, and everything else is on the back burner until that gets done. CORRECT.

Has any thought been giving to contacting Lincoln Enterprises and seeing if ADB or SJG might be able to market the old McMasters blueprints. SVC DOUBTS THAT PARAMOUNT WOULD STAND STILL FOR THIS.

Of course, given how much work the F5 is turning out to be, the thought of doing a cruiser is... intimidating.

Doing a battleship is downright terrifying. ;)

By Nick Blank (Nickb) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 04:04 pm: Edit

Intimidating? Terrifying? Don't you mean fun?

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 08:46 pm: Edit

And don't forget the overlays for the B10V and B10S.

And the B11 and variants.

And the DemonHawk. With all the modules. To go with the miniature.

By Davyd Atwood (Blackelf) on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 12:46 pm: Edit

Of course I mean fun.

If terror wasn't fun, Steven Kings wouldn't sell books.

But I'll still let you do the B10.

By Nick Blank (Nickb) on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 03:06 pm: Edit

Who was the person who claimed they were working on the B10. Didn't they say they had the boom section done?

(remembering posts from long long ago...)

By Davyd Atwood (Blackelf) on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 10:08 pm: Edit

SVC -
I've reached the point where I need some feed-back on the K-F5 plans. What I'd like to do is either:

1) post the plans to-date on a temp web site, and take them off after people have given me some comments, or

2) post a description of each deck on the board here.

The problem is that I've got at least one duplicate room & I'm not sure what else to put in there; and I think I've probably forgotten something. So I'd like to get some comments on what else needs to be done.

Cheers.

By Nick Blank (Nickb) on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 11:12 pm: Edit

You could do what I have done in the past, put it on a website and only tell Steve, Gary, and maybe me what it is. That way you get feedback from us without giving away details before the product is published.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 12:08 am: Edit

Has ADB selected people to do deck plans? In what way could someone else be involved?

The FASA plans are not obtainable.

I noticed that only non-TOS ships are on the drawing boards. Should I expect to not see the main cruisers from the three TOS races? (Copyright difficultys?)

By Nick Blank (Nickb) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 12:24 am: Edit

Loren,

I have done some plans, (Free Trader for the GPD core book, and the Fed Frigate for Module Prime Alpha). I also did a set of Romulan Skyhawk plans that will likely get used in Gurps Romulans.

Davyd Atwood is doing the set of plans to be in Gurps Klingons, the F5 frigate.

As far as I know we are the only two currently involved in deck plans so far (but I could be wrong).

If you want to get involved you would have to talk to Gary Plana/Steve Cole.

Nick, have you converted over to using SmartDraw?? If so, I think I need to get with you via e-mail for some pointers. On the other hand, my wife picked up a package set of software for her college classes ... including FreeHand for Windows. Perhaps I should just learn that, because I presume SVC could directly import those files into his FreeHand-Mac.

Yes, I did the Free Trader and Fed Frigate in Smart Draw, and am working at getting the Skyhawk into that format as well. If you have any questions let me know, as I have figured out a few tricks to get Smart Draw to do what I want.

However, there are some things it just doesn't do well, it is sometimes a simple minded program.

If you have access to FreeHand that might be a better option. I would suggest doing a test drawing and see if Steve can read it better than he can read the Smart Draw stuff.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 03:26 am: Edit

Davyd: I'm busy getting GPD itself done; GK stuff can wait a while. Neither Gary nor I have time to look at deck plans this month. DO NOT post them where anyone can find them. I'll talk to you later.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 03:32 am: Edit

What SVC said. For the next couple of weeks, we are busy getting GPD to the printer. ANYTHING else goes to the back burner.

We'll let you know when it goes to the printer...just open a window and wait.

By Davyd Atwood (Blackelf) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 12:35 pm: Edit

SVC, Gary: Okay. I can wait. Please bear in mind that after the end of April my ability to continue with this project becomes seriously impaired. Currently I'm making use of the college's computers; after April I'm done school, so that's not an option, and will have a $10,000 debt to pay off, so buying SmartDraw for at home isn't an option either.

Garth: I'm using SmartDraw, too. If Nick can't help you, feel free to ask me.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 - 01:45 pm: Edit

Davyd: We cannot stop working on the core rulebook to discuss a few pages of a product for next July, one that won't happen at all if we don't get the core rulebook finished. If you get to the point you cannot work on it any more, send Gary your smartdraw files; he'll convert them and send them to me and I'll finish them.

By Davyd Atwood (Blackelf) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 12:25 pm: Edit

SVC: I wasn't trying to suggest you should change the work schedule. I was just informing you of a potential problem.

Since Nick more-or-less volunteered, is it okay if I bounce things off him? Mostly I'm just having writer's block.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 12:56 pm: Edit

Davyd: Nick could offer you good advice.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 02:13 pm: Edit

Oh, Davyd, could I tell you a thing or two about writer's block.

Nick, do you have a "SVC-confirmed standard format" of how we're to do these draftings?? Scale, line-weights, etc, etc??
