Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Starline 2400 Miniatures: Decals for Miniatures: Archive through October 05, 2008

Mark,

That's a shame that you won't be doing any new decals. I received the order last week and really like all of the non-fed decals (especially Romulans!) and was hoping to see some for the battleships, and other upcoming ships.

As a casual board member, I had to do some digging to find you and think that a link on the store page might help boost sales (and perk your inteterest in continuing to produce more decals)

Here's to hoping that you reconsider...

Are there guides for placing the Starfighter brand decals on the Starline minis?

I've just received my order of decals, and I'm scratching my head a bit as to where some of the Fed-CVO decals ought to be placed.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 09:09 am: Edit

Christopher, per the FAQ above:

Quote:

5. I do not have permission to post the painting diagrams or the text placement guides for the decal sets. You can find them here: http://www.starfleetgames.com/decals.shtml I do not why they are listed as Sample Decal Designs on the Starfleet Games Miniatures page, ask SVC. I will produce more color placement guides as time permits.

Is that what you were looking for or was it something else?

By Christopher Scott Evans (Csevans) on Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 01:31 pm: Edit

Jsexton:

Thank you. Yes, I was looking for something like those guides, but it seems a guide for the CVO doesn't exist yet.

The Stellar Shadows Journal features the old Fed CVA. Does anyone here know if it contain diagrams, art, ect, beyond the cover art on the ship?

Thanks again!

You can always email Mark and ask him if he has a text document for the miniature(s) that you are considering.

And by and large, Federation ships have very similarly placed decals, so if Mark doesn't have the ship you're looking for, chances are the same decal is on another ship in a very similar location.

By Christopher Scott Evans (Csevans) on Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 02:13 pm: Edit

Thanks Paul. Yes, I was looking at the decal guides for the other Fed ships and thinking the same thing.

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 03:32 pm: Edit

Mark can send them to you on-request via email (and will). He just can't post them anywhere (and won't).

Paul and Wil, thank you. I will email Mark.

If you can lay your hands on one of the old 1975 AMT Bird of Prey models, the decals provide an excellent set of wings for a King Condor (some cutting and trimming involved, particularly to get around the dorsal Pl-D mounts). All you are really after is the outer sections from each of the wing decals. I was fortunate enough to have a decal set from that model kit in my part box and just finished putting them on my King Condor. Felt a little weird cutting up and applying decals that are just one year younger than me. I was holding my breath the whole time.

JT Graphics makes a replacement set of decals for the AMT model. A little pricey, but they can be found here

I posted this on the other board but any help here would be greatly appreciated:

Guys i am trying to figure out where a lot of these Starfighter decals go, I am just leaving a bunch off of my fed's as I dont want the hassle of dealing with saucer edge windows etc... But as for the klingons I have almost no idea where anything goes on the D7/D6 and F5's there is a guide for the C8 (although some of the decals aren't on there) But it isn't helping with the other ships. Anyone know where the Gold Circles are supposed to go? Any help would be awesome.

According to Mark's instruction sheet:
18. Sensor Receiver dishes. Place one in the depression on the forward boom. For the Scout versions, place on the front of the secondary hull facing forward abreast of the boom, one to each side near the Phaser mount it replaces.

You can get detailed instruction sheets from Mark by emailing his company. He's very quick in responding.

Oh that makes a ton of sense. Thank you very much. I thought the instructions were on ADB's webite. I'll shoot him an email.

Don't know if this has the details you need but these are from the original 2200 minis:

On the same page as the painting guides, there are most (not all) of Mark's decal placement guides.
HERE

There was some confusion after Joe Butler passed away. SVC thought they had been posted.

be nice to see a Fed BC guide

By Paul Cordeiro (Ogoptimus) on Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 07:56 pm: Edit

Mark's got one. It's not all colorful and such, just a text file, but it's complete.

The thing is, since most Fed ships are similar, you can figure out where most decals go based on what you see on others, or on TOS.

By Mark Tutton (Starfighterace) on Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 08:06 pm: Edit

All one has to do is e-mail me for the instructions. If I don't have a color placement guide, I have a text one. You have to ask, so I no longer assume a customers dosen't already have one. It's not a problem to e-mail it. Same if you have any questions on the decals at all. Glad to help. But to get the help, you must ask. The Betazed ran off with the Vulcan never to be seen again, so I don't have any mind readers left.

C'mon Mark. Surely theres another touchy feely around there somewhere that you could convince to work for free since Franchise characters don't have $:O

Any one else out there producing Federation decals???

By Mike Raper (Raperm) on Sunday, September 21, 2008 - 10:04 pm: Edit

Maybe, but good grief, why go with anyone else? Mark's decals are spot on for fit, and he turns 'em out in less than a week most of the time. I can't think of anyone else I'd rather use, personally.

By Scott Alan Woodard (Ogma) on Sunday, September 21, 2008 - 10:31 pm: Edit

Ah, know what... I thought Mark was out of the loop last I checked... Sorry about that.

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Monday, September 22, 2008 - 02:32 pm: Edit

What gave you that idea?!? Mark isn't a frequent poster here or on the FedCom BBS, but he's around and his website gets updated fairly often.

I just want to make a plug for Mark's Romulan decals. I have been painting SFB minis for close to 10 straight years now. I have tried and failed repeatedly to get Romulan "wing" and "crest" insignia to look right on the trailing edges of wings and on the bellies of ships. I've been plowing through a repaint job on my Roms in preparation for Council, and Mark's decals have been awesome.

If you're like me, and have your minis permanantly mounted to stands, be prepared for some work if your adding these decals after they are assembled. Mark's decals are a single piece, and don't include a hole for the stand. What I've had to do with most of the decals is cut them in half (or in some cases more than 2 pieces), then cut a stand hole prior to application. I then put the decal on in pieces around the stand. It takes some work to get the decals lined back up again, but if you're patient, the cut lines are barely visable. You absolutely need to apply a decal solvent like Micro Sol to get the decal to lay down around the stand, but the result is still pretty good. If you have the option (I didn't), a better approach is to paint the mini off the stand, apply the decal, cut a small hole in the decal after it is set to clear the stand whole, and then mount it. Either way, the result is a great looking mini.

Dear Customers,

The Starfighter Decals web store is approaching its first year anniversary. After looking at the sales figures, it is with a heavy heart I am going to discontinue most of the Star Fleet Battles decal sets. Most of the line experienced little or no sales in the past 50 weeks. Only the Federation ships, Federation Commander Squadron, and Fleet Boxes have enjoyed anything close to steady sales. I am also going to discontinue customizing the Federation ship names. Starfighter Decals line of 1/144, 1/72, and US Navy Air wing decals and resin parts have experienced phenomenal growth during the same period. So this is where my energy is going to be concentrated. This means something has to give, and the slow sales items have to go. This means the Star Fleet Universe Decals.

In two weeks I will be discontinuing to following decal sets: All Klingon, Romulan, Kzinti, Gorn, Hydran, Lyran, Tholian, WYN, Juggernaught, and Orion sets. The following Federation sets will be discontinued: POL, BATS, CVN Carrier Group, BB, DNL/DNH, DN Combat Circle Option, DNG, SCS/CVA, CV(O), CX, CVF/CVS, GSC/CF, DD/SC, “Old” NCL, and “Old” FF markings. Also being removed form the list are the 2 Cruiser box sets.

I am going to continue supporting the Federation Commander line as long as sales justify it. With FC:Distant Kingdoms on the horizon, almost all of the races in the SFU will be represented and I will consider making the decal sets to match if demand warrants it.

I will no longer accept any custom decal orders for SFU ships unless you want to pay the $50 per hour charge my other customers pay along with the 4 to 6 month wait that goes along with it.

It was a lot of fun developing this line of decals for my fellow SFB fans, but economic realities, my business, and most important of all, my family comes first. To keep the bills paid and have time for my family, SFU decals becomes the odd man out.

Thank you again to all who supported my business!

Mark Tutton

That's a damned shame. I don't use decals myself, but have friends who do, and they always spoke highly of Mark's work.
