Do you have to keep the paint very thin for that?
No, if it is too thin it will flow in the deeper areas and the whole panel effect will be ruined.

When you say layer upon layer - do you mean you literally just paint a lighter shade right over all of the darker shade? Or do you mean you are painting a smaller "highlighted" area lighter? ...
