What I mean is that I thought HETs were announced in place of a normal move, for example a ship at baseline speed 16 would do his move and then a ship at speed 24 would do his, and HET if he wanted to - as opposed to all HETs including those performed by ships which would normally move in that sub-pulse being declared before any normal movement occurs.
Another reason you might want to HET in a sub-pulse you aren't due to move is if you are stopped or speed 0 and need to turn a shield away or get weapons to bear on an opponent for the next firing opportunity. |

Actual example: I had a Destroyer in a hidden-objective multiplayer scenario where my target was a Fed Dreadnought. I'd pick speed 24, he was doing 16, and I'd lied my way into a firing position 2 hexes off his rear flank. He'd used most of his phasers but had fully overloaded photons (FA arc). My turn mode was unfulfilled - his fulfilled.
I took the shot, got average dice, but didn't knock out enough weapons to take on the (now rather annoyed) DN.
Now, if I kept moving forward, I'd end up right in front of his guns before I could turn off. I could decel and turn, but he could do the same and I'd end up in his front arc before getting to safe distance. So I had to declare a HET, and then run for the map edge.
HETs being a 'me too' decision, the DN could HET as well, and if he wanted to catch me, he needed to. So he did.
HETs are executed in move order, and so the DN, being slower, moved first. He turned to face my DD.
My best move then was to cancel the HET - the original plan, to turn and run, would get me 6 OL'd photons at range 3 or 4. Going straight forward put me behind the DN (his turn mode now unfulfilled) and gave me the running space needed to get away. |

HETs are announced at the start of the sub-pulse - 2D2a - and executed during it in move order. |

If one of us makes a mistake and wishes to change it or forgets to do something such as pre-arming, etc. at the appropriate point in the sequence of play, so long as nothing has been done that depended on such a decision and so long as all players agree, we are usually quite lenient about it. We tend to find this makes for a better, more interesting battle as each player is allowed to perform nearer to his best. |
Ah. My mistake - it was a battle you and I played where we did the big take-back, not at Exeter.
Bah. Still, we do play properly at Exeter, you know _________________

Indeed, it seems I hadn't quite got that before but I think I get it now. HETs are declared before all movement in a sub-pulse occurs and this part works on a "me too" basis, and then HETs are actually resolved and performed at the moment a normal move would take place, if at all. |

Just to confirm a few things:
- HETs are indeed announced, and paid for, at the start of a sub-pulse before anyone moves.
- A cancelled HET loses the power (since it is already paid for), but the ship does NOT use its "one free HET" bonus.
- If a ship is moving the sub-pulse an HET is made, the HET is performed in place of the ship's normal turn. The movement takes place normally.
- If a ship is not moving the sub-pulse an HET is made, the HET is performed in the same sequence as if the ship would move, but, of course, the ship does not actually move.
I think everyone has it, I just wanted to confirm that you do. _________________

You do not pay "not to perform" the HET. You just lose the energy you paid to do it. It is not like a deceleration. _________________ "Captain" Terry O'Carroll, fourteen papers published including six best of issue
