We played an interesting matchup today: the Fed DDM vs. the Kzinti CL.

We had been wanting to run this duel for quite some time because it pitted two ships that were only 4 points different against one another and because it might potentially feature two distinct approaches. We were not disappointed.

The DDM started at speed 8 and loaded its two photons while keeping a wary distance from the CL. The CL came to range of 15 before the end of the turn. Both ships exchanged long range phaser fire and both used some of their reserves to reinforce. No hits resulted on the Kzinti shields and only 1 hit scored on the DDM's #2 shield. The CL also launched a couple of drones from long range (this was Middle Years, so the drones moved at speed 16). The DDM used its leftover power to charge its batteries and partially overload one photon.

Both ships plotted speed 16 for turn 2. The Kzinti had launched his drones in a forked spread and followed them in. The DDM turned back toward the CL and also moved in hoping for a close pass. The CL turned north, so the DDM began quartering in showing his #6. The drones were forced to move closer together as they homed in on the DDM.

With the DDM not wanting to show his #1 toward the CL, the Kzinti maneuvered nicely by turning back toward the destroyer to get a rear oblique shot with his left side weapons. The DDM applied what reinforcement it could and its #5 shield held, but one hit was scored on its #6 phaser. At this point, the ships were 4 hexes apart.

With the CL now behind the destroyer and heading away from it, the DDM tractored the leading drone that was 1 hex away and then performed a HET to pull closer to the impotent left side of the CL. The CL considered a HET of its own, but thought better of it and moved off to a 3 hex range. The DDM let loose with both 12 point photons and 3 ph-1s while downloading another ph-1 to a ph-3 to destroy the untractored drone. All weapons hit well and racked up 40 points of damage. The CL used its batteries to reinforce, but the #5 shield collapsed and 21 points of damage were scored. DAC rolls were all "mid-chart" and the only substantial damage was 3 power hits, a couple of phasers, and a drone launcher.

Turn 3 saw the DDM move off to go start the photon arming sequence. The Kzinti slowed to lick its wounds, but sent another drone after the destroyer. By the end of the turn the DDM had moved close to the west edge of the map and turned to come back for another pass. The CL readjusted shields and repaired the drone launcher.

Because of time, we had to call the game a draw. That was too bad because it was really looking like it could've turned into a nice duel between two fairly evenly matched ships.

As we were packing up, the Kzinti player mentioned that he thought he had let the DDM get too far away during turn 3 and did not pursue it like he should have. He also regretted letting the destroyer get as close as it did during turn 2. He said if the game had been able to continue, he would keep his distance farther than range 4 and try to peck away at the DDM. While his repair rating was 4, the DDM's was only 2. If he could get a directed damage hit on a photon, he might try moving in for a closer pass.

This was one we will probably do again or use as an example to new players of the distinctions between the 'close and hose' approach vs. the 'sabre dance' approach.

I would actually like to hear reports from others who try this matchup. We won't be getting back to play until next week.
