My favorite had to be the Fed/Gorn/Tholian vs Romulan (in asteroids) game Battlegroup Murfreesboro played while playtesting Tholians. I'm sure there was a write-up somewhere long away and far away... but it's probably lost in the mists of time.

Plasmaboy was the Romulans (of course), Lee Wood was the Tholian player, and I was the allies.

Towards the end of the game, Plasmaboy ended his move at range 1 from Tholian cruiser, so he grabbed it in a tractor beam. The next two turns, he shoved it through the asteroids while he traveled though the clear pathway adjacent to said asteroids.

It was like a congo line gone wrong...

Push... bang,
Push... bang,
Push... bang,
Push... Boom! (there goes a shield),
Push... BANG! (there goes some internals),
Push... BANG!! (more internals),
Push... BOOM!!! (there goes the ship!)

It's been over a year, so I might get some details wrong, but...
In a nutshell:

Small fleet action.
Me: Fed BC, CS, NCL. (pretty much my classic small squadron mix).
My opponent: Klingon C7, F6, E4, E4 (IIRC; we were within 5-10 points of each other, one of the E-4's might have been an F-5 or even an F-5W - it's been a long time).
Terrestrial planet in the middle of the map, fleets starting at opposite corners.

My opponent had been talking about wanting to employ more "tactics" in his play, such as flanking maneuvers, etc.. I suspected he was trying to employ strategies applicable to a different setting and games (pincer movements with ground troops against a non-mobile enemy, etc.) and was failing to really think through what the "meta game" aspects of FedCom would allow and what would be effective. I knew that if he truly did indeed divide his forces, and intervening terrain prevented him from quickly changing that, I would be able to overwhelm the individual portions and pull off a fairly easy win. Kind of a "dirty trick", but war is a dirty business. The next time we played with terrain, I put the "trick" into practice.

At the start of the session, we both approached the planet at base 16 speed.

My ships were in tight formation (eventually stacked, as I approached the planet), all arming standard-load photons.

His were in an increasingly loose formation.

At the end of the first turn, both fleets were 6-8 hexes from the planet and there was a small amount of phaser sniping at range 14+ from the ships that weren't blocked by the planet (mostly from him, as his ships were considerably spread out.

The end of turn 1 was the decision point for me. I was hoping he would indeed divide his forces and send them around either direction of the plnet (especially since he was so dispersed already). I chose to keep my ships tight together, heading straight at the planet (to allow me to react either direction, once he committed).

A few impulses into turn 2, he took the bait and sent his F6 and one E4 around the planet's lower side, while the C7 and escorting E4 went around the top. I kept heading straight for the planet (watching my ships turn modes carefully) for at least two more inpulses to make sure he was committed. At the last minute, I turned to engage his lighter forces (after they were committed to fighting alone).

After using some phasers for drone defense, 8 mostly overloaded photon torpedoes and some phasers, plus decent dice, let me destroy the F6 outright and mission-kill the E4, with only shield damage on the BC and NCL in return. I had reserved the photons on one cruiser for the inevitable fight with the C7.

He then turned the C7 group around to engage me head-on, rather than let me orbit the planet and hit him from behind. However, he was now outnumbered, had surrendered the initiative, and was turning into the small wave of drones I had out. In the ensuing firefight, he caused serious damage to the NCL (removing most of my unfired photons), but lost his forward-hemisphere shields and took some minor internal damage.

In turn 3, I was able to bring my numbers to bear and over-run the C7, laying into it with phasers from all three cruisers at point-blank range, crippling it. The planet greatly restricted his ability to use his maneuverability advantage.

My drones had all been targeted on the E4 escort. With the C7 now lacking any tractor beams and his decision to use all his phasers offensively, he had little in the way of drone-defense for the E4 and around 4 drones impacted, mission-killing it.

His return fire badly crippled, but did not kill the NCL.

Facing two essentially untouched cruisers about to have loaded photons and with nothing but crippled ships and floating wrecks to work with, he chose to declare an end to the contest, somewhat confused as to "why flanking did not work".

I'm actually a pretty lame tactician, but this game was one of those rare moments were I actually had a plan pan-out and execute they way I envisioned (mainly due to an error of the other guys' that I was able to exploit). It doesn't happen that well for me very often, so I enjoy the good times when I can.

Not necessarily my 'best' battle, but fondly remembered. An object lesson in 'what the rule says, not what you *think* it says. This was part of a short-lived SFB campaign many years ago.

My Hydran squadron was searching a border region for a larger Lyran fleet. The map was one hex to a light year, and so showed individual star systems; I was sending the Outrider (configured as an SRV) HMS Totality to scout out each one in turn.

Eventually, she found them; the enemy had a DN, half a dozen assorted cruisers and some escorts and auxilliaries.

Totality was spotted, and ran. She was pursued by a CW, a CWS and two DWs.

Once clear of the system, I sprang my ambush, a Lord Cardinal (HMS Supremacy), a Dragoon (HMS Temerity) and a Tartar (HMS Diligence).

This was played out as a four-player game; The Lyran player took the CW and a DW, his mate (playing Klingons in the campaign) took the CWS and the other DW, my mate Paul took Totality (with orders not to get her blown up!) and I took the three cruisers.

The split in command hurt the Lyrans on turn one - they plotted different speeds, and fought as separate elements, with the Klingon player - oddly - being much less aggressive.

They fired a disruptor volley on impulse 24 of the first turn, at about range 20, IIRC, bouncing off our sheild re-inforcement...and burning out the UIMs on both the CW and leading DW.

They continued to close...we dumped reserve warp and accellerated.

So on turn two, Supremacy and Temerity made an oblique pass on the CW, while Diligence went head-to-head with the DW. The other two Lyrans were about a dozen hexes away by this time.

It got loud at about impulse 10. Supremacy and Temerity fired at range 4, skirting the CW's one raised ESG, and my opponent announced he was firing overloaded disruptors.

"No you aren't. Your disruptors haven't recovered from your UIM burnout, it takes 32 impulses"

"Doesn't matter, I've got spare UIMs, they go active after eight impulses."

"Sure, your UIMs are working, but your disruptors themselves are not. Here's the rule..."

Cue much wailing and lamentation, but the disruptors fireth not.

The CW's operating ESG was KO'd by my ship's fire, and the second one was taken out by a successful H&R from Supremacy. Diligence gutted the DW in a head-on pass, in exchage for a dinged No1 shield; Supremacy took 15 not too vital internals from the CW's phasers.

The wrecked - and disarmed - CW and DW then found themselves facing Totality and fourteen Stingers...

The two surviving Lyran ships fled.

The Romulan attack on the Lyran held level 6 system was played last night. the fleets started about 45 inches away and headed fairly straight at each other with the Romulans at BLS of 16 and the klingon and Lyrans at 24. the Defenders launched 9 drones at the outside fire hawk on impulse 5 or 6. The Romulans fired phasers at the drones on impulse 7 damaging 3 and killing 3 then went evasive. on impluse 8 the defenders Alpha striked the war eagle in the center of the Romulan formation with disapointing results. The war eagle had it front shild knocked less than half was down due to bad rolls, evasive modifiers, range and some sub par ship stats. that was the end of turn one which passed very quickly.

At the start of turn two the roms finished loading all torps and declared BLS of 16 again, and the Klyrans went with a BLS of 24. it got very interesting here. the Klingons put their 3 E -4s out in a gun line ahead of the rest of their ship as bait for the Romulans figuring they would be ignored and could harras the romulans latter or be killed and the Lyran reserves could be brought in to replace them if they where diroyed. The rest of the Klingon ships and the Lyran started a saber pass. A second wave of drones were fire and the defending fleet focused fire on the war eagle again. the romulans got to close range the the E-4s and gutted 2 of them with directed fire to keep them on the board and in play

War Eagle in trouble

the war eagles launched their R torps one at the center E-4 that didn't get gutted and one at the Lyran CW. the lest tof the romulans heald their torps.

the 2nd war eagle took the rest of the klingon ire but manage to stay alive bearly. With the threat of 450 points of torpedoes and romulans with plenty of power and unable to bring reserves in the remaining Klingons and Lyran ships had to flee the table

oh and the battle hawk came on in reseve for the Romulans after the war eagle died and was able to capture one of the drifting E-4s . The Condor hdn tracktored the other and captured it later as well.

I am sure I missed alot in this post but onr thing. This was a great game and all the players played great and good sportmanship abounded.

I don't know if it was the greatest game but, it made for great narrative. I've played since the 70's (yeah, that's right, the original folio version) so there have been alot of moments.

We had a regular group and liked to play scenarios. We decided to try out the "Juggernaut". I drew the big chit and took the monster.

We set up as per scenario rules. Being a long time Federation player, I decided to remove the photons ASAP. With that in mind, I charged the CA and ripped it to shreds. The Jugernaut cruised by leaving only some of the bridge, a few points of power and a single photon.

Fast forward. The game has proceeded with the remaining "allies" all trying to get a peek up the Juggernauts skirts while staying out of the phaser IV's crush range. Judicious use of side slips, turns and the rotating shield had the Juggernaut just about one turn away from leaving the map for some tasty colonists. The other vessels were getting desperate but, no one wanted to lose their ship to be the hero.

Then, just as the range from the crippled Fed cruiser reached 30 and the shield was rotated toward some nasty plasma, that one photon screamed accross the void and right up the tail pipe. The power loss was enough to allow the remaining ships to get the best of the wounded beast.

Hat's off to the guy who sat through all that, nursing his crippled platform.

MOTTO

Never, ever, leave a guy with a loaded photon at your back.

Wow! Sounds like Chekov was at the weapons station for that one.
(Sulu would never have made that shot. He was always reporting, "No effect on the photons, Captain.")

What a shot!

Checkov also hit that asteroid in the wormhole in ST:TMP while Sulu missed the Reliant a near point blank range in TWOK.

Yes, yes, Sulu was using manual while Checkov was using the auto targeting, but that wormhole effect was crazy.

One of my best game moments came playing Feds (NCC, CS, NCL, and Pol) against Romulans (NHK, SPA and 2xSEA) in Fleet Scale. Range 7, no damage to either fleet, and the Romulan plasma torpedoes are fully armed. I fire all my photons at the Sparrowhawk--hitting with 6 of 7 (some partially overloaded), and overkilling it before it can fire.

Of course, I then had to run for a while, but it was a one in a million shot!

Was an SFB game 30 years ago in Highschool. It was a 3 way game. I had a Warbird, Player 2 was a Fed DD and Player 3 was an E4. Turn one I laid an NSM and just backed up. I kept backing up one hex a turn. Turn 3 the DD cames roaring in at me and runs over the NSM the same impulse that he was hit by my Type R torpedo in the same sheild. Misses with his photons and only damages my sheilds with phasers. DD gone. The E4 now comes coasting in 3 turns later and is then hit with an enveloping Type R. Game over.

It was a closely contested fight between my Klingon squadron (A DWL and two D7s), and a Tholian squadron. I was sure I was done for when a mass of drones went sailing in through a down forward shield on the Tholian dread - where all those phaser 3s don't bear. Both squadrons were pretty shot up, but I was getting the worst of it at that point, and then it all turned around on one volley.

My friend Rik was leaving the sunny shores (?) of the UK for Middle Earth, sorry New Zealand, and as a last game I put on a Fed Cdr version of "Would you buy a used fighter from this man?". I was Mad Jack, he was Honest Abdul, Jo was a Kzinti (I think), Adi was a Gorn and Dave was the Feds. There might also have been a Romulan sneaking around as well. I went for a simple conversion of the fighters (Speed 8, 8 hits, one P-3 and one drone/turn) and off we went. Seminal moment of the game as when the Gorn got too close to a fighter sqn, and had 6 drones launched at him, along with all the firing of Mad Jack Units that took down a shield. Adi asked for a quick sublight comm, and explained to me that he was, in fact, here to help me. Of course, I immediately cut the tracking of the drones, and he happily turned towards Mad Jack's rag-tag flotilla on Impulse one of the next turn. At which point Mad Jack's fighters released another 6 drones straight through the down shield of the Gorn cruiser. Oops...

Well, I figured he wasn't called Mad Jack for nothing....
