Why RIS? I always thought if you named them Imperial Romulan Ship (IRS) everyone in the states would try their best to destroy them.
But the reason I question RIS is why it is not NIR?

It's not NIR because everything else is prefixed in Federation Standard [otherwise known as English]
It's not IRS because that acronym is taken... by a very large, very influential organization and ADB didn't want to antagonize them. _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

Although the IRS thing could explain why the Romulans get so badly treated in the SFU history! _________________ "Captain" Terry O'Carroll, fourteen papers published including six best of issue

Tony, been thinking about your post and I disagree with you. If everything is based on Federation Standard, then why are the names still Avis (Bird of Omen), Accipiter (Hawk), and Aquila (Eagle). Latin is still used for the base name.
BTW, Aucupis (Bird Catcher in latin) means spy; Parra is Bird of Ill Omen; Praepes is Bird of Good Omen. For smaller ships, you could use Passer (Sparrow) or Ossifragus (Osprey). The game shows Flamma Accipiter (Fire Hawk).
Maybe we could introduce the Carthaginians and have a Sacred Band? _________________ HoD K'el

Latin is used for the base name where? In the ship names thread for SFB? "Real" ship names are used in the ship names thread because the designer doesn't like made-up gibberish names. Instead, the names given are Federation reporting names which are based on English translations of the ship's actual name, if it is known. If not English, then some other Earth language is used (like Latin). But Romulans are not Romans and don't speak Latin. Sometimes this is inaccurate, for example the Federation translates the Romulan "Ru'Akthur" as "Eagle" even though it's actually a native Romulan bird-like creature. _________________ "Captain" Terry O'Carroll, fourteen papers published including six best of issue

Good point, Terry...I was thinking of Starfleet Command, Empires at War, and Orion Pirates.
My apologies, Tony! _________________ HoD K'el

I knew I had seen Latin names and I finally found them in F&E!
Tiberius in sector 4514, Trajanus in sector 5619, Aurelius in sector 4313, Vesuvius in sector 4613, and many more!
But, remember that I agree that Romulan speech is a derivitive of Vulcan and would not be in Latin! It is not logical. _________________ HoD K'el
