Very cool. I'd buy one too.
What materials did you use?
I hope it was materials that are compatible with ADB's metal molding/casting vendors, as that would improve the chances of this getting picked-up.
If not, maybe it could go to one of the resin-casting outfits (Federation Models, BLAP, etc.), should there be a business case for it for ADB.
Either way, thanks for showing the pictures. Pretty neat to see. _________________

Very cool. I'm interested in having one.
I also hope it's compatible with current casting methods. _________________ O.G. OPTIMUS

Thanks guys!
I'm a styrene purist, so this is all polystyrene. There are some parts kitbashed from Revell and Dragon tank kits, but it's all styrene.
I plan on making more minis out of styrene, so I hope it'll work. _________________ "I'm invincible!"

Unfortunately, most plastics turn to goo under the heat and pressure used to vulcanize the rubber molds for metal mini production.
The master you did would work fine for cold resin molding though.
Nice job on those Klingon minis - a unique color-choice. I really like the custom-sculpted Planet Killer. Seeing yours makes me want to finish the paint-job on the one I did. _________________

Ah, I figured as much when you asked. I guess I'll have someone cast it, probably Blappy or Modelnutz on SSM.
Also, thanks for the comments on the Klingons and Planet Killer. Shows you that even a wind-sock can look cool under the right coat of paint (clear blue airbrushed over a coat of steel, FYI). _________________ "I'm invincible!"

Sounds like we're on the same page with the Planet Killer.
Mine was airbrushed with Testors metalizer steel, then buffed with a scrap piece of velvet to blend all the metal particles. Once the weather breaks (in summer), I'll airbrush patches in clear purple, clear blue, and smoke to give it some more scale and depth. The mouth will get a white, yellow, orange, gradient blend to look extra hot and scary.
A (bad) picture of mine in-work is here:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r128/djdood/SFU_Blog_BBS_Stuff/SFU%20Minis%20BBS%20Stuff/Kitbash%20Builds/P1010002.jpg
It was a quick and dirty mini made of foam (hacked out in 5 minutes before the boys showed up for game-night):
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r128/djdood/SFU_Blog_BBS_Stuff/SFU%20Minis%20BBS%20Stuff/Kitbash%20Builds/quick-dirty_planet-killer.jpg
Later, I covered the foam in epoxy to give it a hard shell. In that first picture the epoxy had cured and I was starting to add surfacing putty. I later went further and Dremel-cut gouges into the body, added greenstuff ridges, and a much more defined "mouth" (also from greenstuff). It then got primed in black automotive primer and base-coated.
Other than the buffing and clear-coat for the metal basecoat, I haven't been able to do anything to it since. _________________

On painting the maw, in addition to what you are going to do, I also feathered a bit of red into the still-wet metallic blue in order to give a 'fading-glow' look to it. It came out beautifully.
I fired off a PM to Modelnutz in regard to casting this beauty. _________________ "I'm invincible!"

Email SVC (design@starfleetgames.com) before you get too far. If it is truly made to match the SFB SSD, then his intellectual property is mixed in there and he's going to want to protect that.
I do recall the SFB FRD being described as more of a "tube" shape (I could be wrong though).
SVC would be the one to say what can and can't happen with ADB IP. If the FRD you sculpted isn't like the SFU one, I'm sure he'll tell you so and cut you loose to do what you want with your design. If it is the SFU one that ADB owns, you may (or may not) end up with a deal (especially if you already have casting lined up from a vendor that will be around).
ADB is legally bound to protect their IP, but SVC seems to like to work a deal rather than go legal-eagle. _________________

I'll do that. The only illustration I've seen is the one in Advanced Missions. _________________ "I'm invincible!"

I saw the one that Tyler Robbins did. Incredibly nice, and if I did minis gaming, I'd be begging to buy one at any price.
But the problem is that the one in SFU is very different, with a rectangular as opposed to octagonal cross section. The one Tyler did is the same general shape as the movie. If we (who have published the rectagular design many times) suddenly did an octagonal mini, Paramount would be all over us.
So, we cannot legally manufacture his, or at least, maybe we cannot and I cannot take the risk to find out. Whether it's different enough for somebody else (Ninja Magic?) to do it is anybody's guess.
I wish Tyler would do one of our design. _________________ The Guy Who Designed Fed Commander

Wow! Great work!
I, too love the detail level you can get with styrene and a sharp knife. Unfortunately it dowsn't work well for ADB's casting methods. That's why I got very good at sculpting with brass... since photos of the Juggernaut miniature...
I would love to have one or two (or eight or ten) of the SFU rectilinear design Fleet Repair Docks... _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

Dinnae worry 'bout tha', capn'.
I'm working on new straight sides which would satisfy the requirement of not being from *that* universe(I also want to add a bit more detail and make it a tad shallower; 1/8" clearance is way too close for comfort, IMHO). It should be ready in a couple of hours. I've also got a guy who says he can cast it in a special heat-resistant resin which will work with ADB's casting method.
See you in a flash. _________________ "I'm invincible!"

If the heat-resistant resin works out, that would be super cool.
I'd certainly be interested in at least one FRD, and I'm not worried about final-price, as long as it isn't something in triple-digits. _________________
