Would you usually have that planet start in the center of the map?

Generally, yes, somewhere near the centre of the board. However its exact location on the board itself is not mega-important; more that the map extends for a given distance around the planet - say 50 hexes radius, for example.

So essentially the planet IS the centre of the map, but your actual physical boards do not have to have the planet at the centre of them when they sit on your table. I hope that makes sense..... look it up in the Rulebook, it's called a 'Location Map' and is essentially a giant hexagon centred on the planet.

I think I have the idea thanks, not that the Klingons are having problems right now with the fixed borders, from reading around here I think I'll be able to do the Feds more justice so next game we're going to switch sides.

Feds are a bit funny, assuming a sufficient start distance there are a couple of things you can do on a small fixed map that make them hugely superior to klingons, but if you don't understand those 'tricks' then they don't do so well.

Feds are one of the worst performing empires in the online tourneys (including the early tourney that had no point adjustments), and that uses a small fixed map, on the other hand the top few players see them as one of the top empires in tourneys.
