I was wondering what the Klingon ship class names mean. I was thinking that an E5 would be newer ship that fits the same roll as a D5, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Is there a methodology to the names? I picked up FC a while ago to use in a RPG but I'd like to expand the time line and add more ships.

For the most part, you can view things this way:
Bn (e.g. B10) is a battleship.
Cn (e.g. C8 ) is a dreadnought.
Dn (e.g. D7) is a cruiser.
Fn (e.g. F5) is a frigate (really a small destroyer, but called a frigate).
En (e.g. E4) is a combat escort (really just a small frigate).
Gn (e.g. G2) is a gunboat. There are two types of "gunboat": the G2/G3 which are really police corvettes and the G1 which is a fast patrol gunboat.

These categories pretty much always work, with only a couple glaring exceptions. The primary examples of an exception is the E7 (which is a crappy cruiser built on top of an E5 destroyer, which is a cobbled together ship built on an E4 chassis) and the C7 (which is a heavy battlecruiser, but still just a cruiser).

Now, with the "n" (or number) part, things get a little dicier. Those tend to be the bigger the number the bigger the ship, but only within the series. (E.g. a D7 is bigger than a D5, but not a C5.) There are a lot more variations in how this all works out.
