New on e23! The formerly out-of-print SFB Module D3 Booms and Saucers is now available again! You can also get it as a "classic reprint" from our storefront.

http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB3553

The capability of Federation and Klingon ships to separate their forward sections for use as "space lifeboats" is well known, and happens in scenarios and campaigns from time to time (more often than many players realize).

In response to requests from players, we have created this module to provide the specific SSDs needed for these separated booms and saucers.

Module D3 includes SSDs for:

12 Federation saucers
12 Klingon booms
5 Neo-Tholian rear hulls

Also included are two exciting scenarios:

Deadly Stings
A Klingon's Revenge

Want a print version? We're selling it with a B&W cardstock cover: http://store.starfleetstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=3553&Category_Code=

People have asked us for Update 2 to the Commander's edition rulebook. (Update 1 simply brought Rev. 0 up to the released Rev. 1.) This long out-of-print treasure is now available as an e-book through e23: http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADBSFB3032

Check it out!

Update #2 adds substantially to the core rulebook. Ground combat, boarding parties, more weapons, more ships (and names for them), the introduction of the Lyran Democratic Republic, scenarios, and the Bargantine Campaign are all in this update.

D16 Advanced Boarding Parties: Conduct a boarding assault against an enemy starship with this unique intra-ship combat system.

D22 Energy Balance Due to Damage: An ultra-realistic system for assessing the effects of power lost due to battle damage during the turn.

FD10-15: Advanced modular drone construction, Swordfish drones fire phasers at their target, armored drones survive target defenses, Spearfish drones penetrate enemy shields.

FP8-10: Plasma bolts allow a direct-fire option for plasma torpedoes, Type-D torpedoes can be carried by fighters, special racks allow ships to fire Type-Ds for point defense.

Ships: All of the ship data from SSD Books #7, #8, and #9, plus the ships from Supplement #3, plus the ships published in the addenda (in addition to a special compilation of all of the addenda). Also included are three dozen totally new ships never before published. As a special bonus, a complete list of ship names is also included.

Lyran Democratic Republic: A Star Fleet Battles minor empire, the LDR is a neutral power at the junction of the Klingon, Lyran, and Hydran empires.

Scenarios: The 21 Nexus scenarios, which have been completely updated and reformatted.

The Bargantine Campaign: Just after the General War, the former Klingon Satrapy Bargantina attempted to recover the Landfalk planetary system from the Hydrans. The resulting campaign saw the deadly Exodrones fired against Hydran Harriers.

SSDs: Eight SSD sheets from important Star Fleet Battles starships, including three totally new ships never seen before.

Abbreviations: A completely updated edition of Annex #5, listing the abbreviations used in the Star Fleet Battles rules system.

Revisions: The bulk of this material was previously published in various issues of Nexus magazine and Captain's Log. This edition has been completely revised and updated and includes all addenda previously published and a considerable amount of totally new material. Update #2 is more than just a compilation of old material, it is an important new Star Fleet Battles module.

Note: This product adds new play situations, background material, rules, and starships for the Star Fleet Battles game system. You must have Star Fleet Battles Volume I to use this material. Some material in this product also requires other SFB volumes and products.

Can You Command a Starship?

Your crew lives or dies on your skill and cunning, as you turn to bring your strongest shields and most powerful weapons toward your enemy -- an enemy that might be another starship, a massive robot berserker or an alien being that dwarfs even your massive ship.

The ebook of the Designer 's Edition of Star Feet Battles is now available from multiple venders.

e23: http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=ADB5501-79

DriveThru RPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/125533/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition

Wargame Vault: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/125533/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition

At Origins 1979, we released the Pocket Edition of Star Fleet Battles and it sold out by the fall. We decided to capitalize on success by expanding it into a boxed game released in November 1979. (Back then, pocket games were a new thing and were just not taken as seriously as boxed games.) To save time and work, we just took the rulebook of the pocket game and added pages to the end of it, expanding it from 28 pages to 44 (and effectively just moving the staples from page 14 to page 22). Back then, new SFB rules just got the next number in one big sequence, so you will find weapons rules in two places, scenarios in two places, and ship descriptions in two places. The game was exploding (in more ways than one) and we just kept tacking things onto the end of it. These days, people would expect us to sell a "conversion kit" to bring the pocket edition up to a boxed edition standard, but back then nobody even asked for that. Everyone was happy to (in effect) buy the pocket edition again. We also added a second sheet of counters (these days those are considered half-sheets) and more SSDs (which is those days were lose folded sheets).

The pages from the original pocket edition included all of the core elements that are still the bedrock of SFB: General rules, the first timeline and map, Sequence of Play, Energy Allocation, Movement (including Disengagement), combat, damage allocation, firing arcs, control systems, sensors, scanners, Hull, lab, probes, phasers, photons, disruptors, plasma torpedoes, drones, power (warp, impulse, reactor, batteries), shields, security stations and Klingon mutiny, shuttlecraft, critical hits, leaky shields (which went away in later editions and resurfaced in Federation Commander), damage control, tractor beams, transporters, boarding parties, crew units, emergency deceleration, non-violent combat, super-intelligent computers, boom separation, saucer separation, electronic warfare, and nuclear space mines. (Those rules were updated with a half-dozen errata items found up to that point.)
Federation ships included the Federation dreadnought, command cruiser, cruiser, and light cruiser; Klingon D6 and D7; Kzinti strike cruiser and light cruiser; Romulan Warbird, War Eagle, and KR; Gorn heavy and light cruisers, and the generic base station.

Scenarios included The Duel, Fleet Action, Planet Crusher, Space Amoeba, Base Defense, Sabotage, and Surprise Reversed.

Campaigns included the Captain's Game and Star Fleet Defense Game.

The sublight game (which has yet to be reprinted in later editions)

To this we added 16 pages of Advanced Game material including:

Mass-based Movement: No longer did every ship have a movement cost of 1. The dreadnought slowed down; light cruisers sped up.

Free movement (no more plotting 32 hexes of movement before you saw what the enemy was doing).

Tactical Warp Maneuvers, High Energy turns with breakdown

Kzinti fighters

New kinds of drones (the first step on a long and slippery road)

Anti-drones (only because there was a leftover box on a Kzinti ship and we had no other ideas of what to do with it)

Overloaded photons and disruptors, Gorn swivel torpedo launchers, Ubitron Interface Modules

Federation tug pods (other empires had to wait for their tugs)

New more complicated firing arcs for ships from television

Tholians and their webs, Stasis field generators, Using tractor beams at warp speed

Ground bases, planets, asteroids

New ships in the boxed designer's edition included the Federation scout, destroyer, and tug; the Klingon C8 and C9 dreadnoughts, and the F5 and E4 frigates; Kzinti strike carrier and frigate; Romulan KF5R frigate, Tholian patrol corvettes, Orion raider cruisers, starbases, and freighters.

New scenarios included Piracy, Duel with a Pirate, Pursuit into the Asteroids, Pirates Go for Big Game, Moray Eel of Space, Cosmic Cloud, Assault on a Starbase, The Coming of the Meteor, Cruise Drones, and The Attack of Shuttle Group #26.

Advanced versions of the Captain's Game and Star Fleet Defense Game were included.

All of the charts, tables, and indexes were updated.

We plan to put every SSD book on e23 but (because of some people who give nasty reviews to non-updated books) not until we update them.

I don't really know if that particular one has been updated or not.

Updating takes hours of work and the sales barely pay for the employee time, so we have to work those in with more profitable projects.

Understandable. It's not "free" work by any means.

But I'll buy every SSD book that goes up. Which, I know, one sale of each doesn't even come close to covering costs, but... Wink

I agree. Shipping costs aren't going to get less expensive. It just makes more sense, imo, to purchase something in this format (e23).

I had to go dig up the answer to the question.

The AdvMis SSD book has not been updated yet.

There was some confusion a year ago when the rulebook was updated and somebody somewhere assumed that the SSD book also had been.

Work to update that SSD book had just begun when the fatal computer crashes of last year derailed that and many other projects.

It's a BIG book, 143 SSDs, just about the biggest one. Literally, we could update two other books (if we don't pick really big ones) instead of this one. It needs to be updated but then so does every SSD book.

Steve Petrick is busy right now but the next time he decides to do an SSD update this is one of the three or four top picks.

SFB 2012 Master Rulebook Now Available from Multiple Sources

The Star Fleet Battles Master Rulebook includes all of the "rules" (no scenarios, annexes, SSDs, counters, maps, or ship descriptions) from Basic Set, Advanced Missions, C1, C2, C3, F1, F2, J, J2, K, M, X1, X1R, Y1, and Y2. All rules have been integrated into a single continuous text, all errata have been incorporated, and some new clarifications have been added. The book also includes rules (S1.0) through (S8.0) and the (R0.0) rules.

NOTE: This is the RULES, not the rest of the game. If you don't have any other Star Fleet Battles products, you won't be able to play as you won't have the ship descriptions, ship diagrams, map, annexes, counters, energy forms, impulse charts, or anything else you need to play. If you are just starting, we suggest that you get the Basic Set instead so you can start playing immediately.

SFB Module C3A Now Available from Multiple Sources

"Lieutenant, just what the heck is an 'Andromedan'?"
"Sir, I just don't know. Nobody does. Their ships, their weapons, their technology are all unknown."

Most SFB players do not realize that it was not until the Andromedans were defeated that Star Fleet finally figured out who they were, where they came from, and what they wanted. Four decades of battles against the Andromedans were based on battle reports, guesses, calculations, estimations, and (it was said) a Ouija Board. Star Fleet Intelligence (not to mention the intelligence services of other empires) was constantly issuing new guesses as to what Andromedan ships were in service and what new ones could be expected in the near future. Star Fleet Intelligence assumed that since other empires had improved their fleets with refits, new designs, old hulls expanded with new sections, alternative weapons, fighters, bombers, gunboats, and even X-technology, that the Andromedans would also make the same innovations.

The rulebook includes a collection of these guesses, predictions, estimations, and extrapolations, presented as rules for new weapons. It also includes the alternative timeline discovered by the Darwin as well as the historical campaign by which the Andromedans destroyed the Lyran Democratic Republic. There are 60 SSDs for these conjectural ships. Explore X-ships (aren't the regular ships scary enough?), a Desecrator Starbase, dissection beam ships, fighters, fast patrol ships, and much, much more, presented in your choice of the original black and white or in color.
