When it comes to abstract discussions, I wonder if the proposed new balance between technology generations might help shift things decisively away from attrition units as viable game elements in the era of second-generation X-ships.

If most fighters and PFs were to be treated in the same manner as other TL 12 units (and if the Stinger-X were to be put in the same category as other X1 craft), the advantages which X2-ships seem set to offer (in terms of shooting them down while soaking up fire in the other direction) could put a renewed onus on "line" ships, rather than carriers and/or PFTs.

(Well, one could argue that the X1 era showed signs of going that way already, but that the X-raiders got a fresh lease of life in the RTN-hunting game after Y195.)

If that were the case, I wonder if the Hydrans would be stubborn enough to develop a "Stinger-X2", or if even they would move away from the "casual carrier" concept they first adopted during their first period of exile in the Old Colonies?

Well, you could replace the Stinger-2s with Stinger-1s in SFB. The Stinger one has 8 boxes, two Phaser-3s, and two Fusion Charges. The Stinger-2 could be used just as an X1 fighter.

Is this a balance issue?

There is already a Stinger-X in SFB; the question was whether or not the Hydrans would (or perhaps could) take the next step forward and develop a new X2-era Stinger for use on their second-generation X-ships.

Also, in FC, while we have not yet seen any Hydran X1-ships (or Stinger-Xs to work with them), we do have the distinction between the Stinger-2 as seen on Main Era Ship Cards and the Stinger-1 featured on the Middle Years Ship Cards from Briefing #2. Were we to get Hydran X1 Ship Cards at some point, I would be surprised if they didn't bring the current Stinger-X over from SFB also.

This thread is 5 1/2 years old. Whatever happened with X2? Is it being worked on? About to be released? Released and somehow I missed it?

I have been sick for the last five years and (almost) unable to work. X2 will get done (probably 2021) but in the meantime you will get more master starship books, plus Module R4T and Shadow of the Eagle and Module R13.

X2 will happen, it's just not going to happen this year. Next year looks very promising, but that's not a promise. At my age, I may get sick again, or decide to spent a few weeks climbing Machu Pichu.

Been busy doing other things, and with Steve Petrick in the hospital/rehab for two months now, nothing is moving in SFB.
