Do I understand that Briefing 2 The Middle Years will have only black-and-white ship sheets? How disappointing...

Even the TOS was in color!

I'd pay the extra...

Well, Briefing 1 was black-and-white too.

However, there are plans afoot whereby the ship cards from Communique and Briefing [Captain's Log too? I dunno] are to be published as 'proper' FC-style laminated cards.

http://www.starfleetgames.com/federation/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1601

So I would imagine that Briefing 2 will get the same treatment, eventually.

The difference would be astronomical, something over $100.

Given the other products in color, I hope the company finds some way to do these, too...

Maybe. Color is expensive, and you either pay a dollar a page for short runs or you pay tens of thousands of dollars for thousands of copies. I don't see us selling thouands of copies of a $125 middle years book.

At some point, we might be able to offer very expensive short runs of color stuff, or sell color PDFs and let you go pay Kinkos a fortune to print and laminate them.

There is no Kinko's only FedEx Office.

I bought a personal heat-seal laminate machine for just such situations.

The plastic isn't exactly cheap, but since I'm not paying someone else for use of their machine and employees it works out pretty nicely.

I look forward to that option, even at several dollars per vessel.

My $30 Wall-Mart laminator gets pulled out pretty much every other Communique. If and when more pdf options appear, they'll certainly work for me.

8.5" x 11" paper in landscape folded in half slipped into a half-size plastic pouch does the job just as well. All the pertinent charts fit on the other side, too.

I can always find lamination, its the color ship card I need first...

So, for the record:

please! middle period ship cards for the TOS CAs (Fed, K, and R) at least...

Well they are releasing a Booster which has only the Franz Joseph design Federation Ships (CA, DN, DD, SC and Tug??). I'm not sure if these are going to be middle years or the whatever years the current FC era is. If they match the FJ designs I would imagine they'd be more Middle-yearsish because I don't recall his blueprints having drone launchers for example.

I noticed the Squadron scale middle years DD (DDM) they had in Communique #37 only had two photon torpedos, whereas the standard one has four. I assume the one in the Franz Joseph booster will have four.

I was surprised by the two-photons-on-the-DD, also. What gives?

In a Captain's Log a few issues back - don't have it near me, so I can't give you the number - it was released as the 'real' middle years DD, as it is painfully obvious to anyone who has played SFB that you can't run an unrefitted DD with 4 photons. Once you convert 4 lab to APR or AWR, it is viable to have 4 photons. So, I think think we're seeing a bit of a 'retcon' of the DD. For people who have only played FC, the 2 photon DD won't be that out of place.
