Another fun game occurred at a regional convention in 2010.
I had made arrangements to spend my vacation with my kids/grandkids... leaving ScoutMom to visit with the babies while I went to the gaming convention.

A local Federation Commander group had arranged to come to the con as well, so we could play FC. Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon were regular, published scenarios.

For Saturday evening however, we decided to play on Heavy Battlecruiser each... every man for himself. Of course, this rapidly devolved into the four of them versus me.
I used every trick I'd ever learned...
Rotating Shields at the end of the turn [Hey! I didn't know you could do that!]
Sacrificing frame damage instead of the final box of any type [Where's that at in the rules?]
Paying to decelerate...
Emergency Deceleration!
Evasive Maneuvering
Rolling drone launch to facilitate reloads
Suicide Shuttles
and even rolling down the window and throwing rocks to score extra damage... OK, so I actually used the probe launcher as a weapon.

The end result was three destroyed BCHs and one crippled BCH before they took me out.
That was a fun game!!!

Frigate Free For All:

This one was just a whim. We wanted to have just a quick game so picked nothing but frigates. They let me take the Kzinti DF against their Rom snipe and Gorn FF Twisted Evil

They quickly realized their mistake after the first drone launch against the Rom. The second turn targeted on the Gorn was just a lovely moment (Wait, you can only control 6 drones...OH #%&$!)

The game actually went much faster than expected. They were busy trying to bring their plasma to bear and the Rom miscounted the range...6 drones popped him nicely.

The Gorn "supposedly" learned from that mistake, but trying to turn a down shield away from me pointed him head-on to the drone wave. He thought he could "out maneuver" them. Would have made it too if he had remembered where I was. One "Gorn" anchor later and he blew up nicely too.

I got off with some shield damage, but no internals. They never let me use the DF again Sad

ounds like a very good and detailed battle.

If you're referring to my post, yeah, it was a nail biter, and I had intended to write a more detailed report on it and post it here. It led me to get really interested in Klingon vs Tholian tactics. It also served as a reminder to me that one should never give up, because I was certain I was dead there for a while. Partly what happened happened because we both had to turn. It was a closed map, and the edge of the board was looming up. I wish I culd say that I ahd planned the whole thing with brilliance and cunning, but the truth is I fired those drones never expecting a single one of them to hit. But he had to turn and...it just happened.

if there was a tactical takeaway on that fight it was that he might have done better using cast web from his webcasters to slow my approach and keep me back. He did some damage with his web fists, but not enough. Letting me pick the engagement range was probably a mistake.

Klingon Tholian fights tend to be close and hard fought. So do Klingon Gorn matches. I know they aren't considered traditional adversaries, but the weapons and tactics are pretty dissimilar, and it can make for a really tough fight for both sides.

Not long ago I was teaching a guy Fedcom. he was an old time SFB player who had no experience with the new game, so we set up the Planet Killer, which I played. He had Feds, because he really likes Feds. I guess everybody has their favorite die roll horror story. He fired eight photon torpedoes at a range of seven and scored one hit. I drew a bead on his Command Cruiser, and the phaser 4s rolled three ones and a two. To quote the guy from Aliens "Game over man! Game over!". To this day, he objects if he sees those black dice with the red dots come out.

Will have to write up some battles we pulled for a final round for a tournament. I'm sure the players were expecting the "best biggest newest" ships and what they got were FREIGHTERS! The civilian ships! fighting over an asteroid claim... Talk about tactics!

In one battle of Gorn vs something or other I found it amusing when my opponent declared emergency acceleration to try and reinforce his shields against my incoming volley of Plasma-S and G.

Needless to say, he exploded. Which was a pretty common theme in our games as I was able to do well with most of the battles I was playing.

Also played a scenario of Lyran vs Andromedan, a game which seemed decidedly stacked against me (the Lyrans) however by battle's end his ships were in pieces and the battle was won. Which was remarkable only because as I say the scenario seemed so decidedly in his favour in terms of positioning and deployment.

3 games stand out in my mind.

My pure drone orions vs Patrick Doyles Gorns in a tournament game. It went pretty much the full 10 turns, I expended probably 80+ drones without a single hit in the first half of the game and was expecting to lose when one of Patricks ships ventured 1 hex closer than he should -a number of impulses later it was tractored by a smaller ship which slowed it down enough for a bigger ship to catch up and swap tractors stopping it fully for 15 drones following up the back side. Even after that I wasn't sure I'd win as I was pretty empty on drones.

A Fed vs Klingon campaign scenario. The 'Ferrero Rocher incident'. The superior Fed force against the klingons and the Romulan ambassadors cruiser. All the klingons had to do was protect the Romulan by disengaging him (more than ~30 hexes) on a fully floating map. As the Rom was running at speed 32 my feds had to as well, any drones etc just had to be taken on the nose like man, no ducking and weaving which would cost range. His escorts could counter attack knowing that I couldn't adjust course to counter without those ships dropping out the scenario due to range. However, long range phasers and photons would eventually whittle the Rom down.

The penultimate (as it would turn out) game of our 4 player campaign. I was the Andro. The Fed player had been very remiss across the other side of the strategic map and found a massive Gorn fleet parked in an asteroid area outside his home base area. I was the only one who could possibly stop the Gorn winning the game. So in displaced 1 Dominator, 1 Intruder and 2 hangars worth of satellites to face a full Gorn fleet led by a BB. I had just lost the fleets scout in a previous battle and hadn't had chance to grab a new one, the Gorns had one. I had 10 turns to do enough damage to put off a Gorn assault on the Fed world. ~1500pts of Andro vs ~1900pts Gorn in asteroids with both sides having only strategic campaign objectives was an awesome game. Details here

I tend to remember the spankings I got rather rather than the wins. I played Paul (multi time fed com and sfb champ) ftf alot. You learn a lot when you get crushed.
