Is it a common practice to mix ships of different eras when assembling fleets? Like late in the General War, suppose the Klingons revived their mothball fleet and dropped several middle-years D6's into the mix. Is that type of thing allowed? discouraged? For those players who aren't satisfied with ballpark points totals, those middle years ships can come in handy at filling "points gaps."

I don't think we've ever done that, but it's your game, do whatever you feel you want on ship selection so long as you have fun.

The general intention was that Middle Years ships would be used with Middle Years ships, and ships from the Main Era would be used with each other. In your example, those D6s would not be Middle Years ships, but would rather be standard D6s. The ships have to be prepared and outfitted to be used at all, so they would be brought up to current standards as part of the process. It doesn't cost much extra, and costs way less down the line.

That said, it is your game. Use whatever ships together you want to. Heck, feel free to mix fleet and squadron scale ships, if you want. (Fleet scale cruisers make nice light destroyers.) Do what makes sense to your group.

One idea that seems to hang around is the situation of one or more newly refitted ships getting into a skirmish with standard ships from a previous era. As an example, imagine a squadron with an X-ship (though X-ships are not in Federation Commander yet).

The concept could work with a ship or ships from the General War era entering battle with Middle Years era ships. In many cases there is not a big difference, but in some there would be.

An even more interesting situation would be one in which some Early Years era ships encounter an opposing Empire squadron with one or more Middle Years era ships.

Some might argue that such an encounter would be very unbalanced, but it wouldn't necessarily be so. Point values and victory conditions could be adjusted to accommodate the disparities.

Some might argue that this type of scenario would not be fun to play, especially for the player with the older era ships. Again, not necessarily. Some would like the challenge. And there are ways of balancing things.

Another variation would be two mixed squadrons facing off with one another. Each could have one upgraded ship and two older models.

Something for you scenario designers to chew on...

Could be a cool idea - the Kzintis or Hydrans dispatch an expendable strike group to attack the Klingon Mothball Reserve, and the only ship(s) available to defend it are some of the pre-refit ships that were about to head to Klinshai for refit. They might even have degraded crews (5X) to reflect the likelihood that the Klingons might not have fully manned the ship during the milk run from the reserve site to the shipyard...

Or perhaps the Klingons dispatch a suicide raid with Penal Ships against the Federation Fleet Reserve....

I love the idea of mixing eras. Not big on mixing Fleet Scale and Squadron Scale, something about it doesn't feel right.

I did a scenario once with a Fleet scale base station among Squadron scale ships. It was something that was a step below a regular base station, but above a mobile base. It may have even been something built (or leftover) by a world that later became a member of a main empire, I don't remember. It was rejected because of the mixing of scales.

Sacrilege, then? Wink

Sounds like it was an interesting scenario idea though.
